Biryani from a food cart? I shared your skepticism. But the guys who work there hail from Queens and make delicious food. I stuck to what I knew, chicken over rice. We got to talking about spicy food and I asked them if they had a secret sauce back there that they don't give to the white folks. While they apparently don't, he did give me extra spicy green sauce on my chicken. This stuff is GOOD. A nice little heat to it that builds the more you eat it. They also had a nice amount of onions that have soaked up all the flavors and add a nice crunch. And at $5.50 you can't beat the price.
Okay sooooooo maybe they cut back on the Indian spices for the crowd that they have, but I have had better flavored food than this place. I am sorry! it is always packed so I did give it multiple chances since I figured it was pretty popular. The first time I got chicken and rice then another day I got kati rolls, spices were okay, but the parantha wasn't as crispy as I have had at other places. Then another day I got chicken and lamb combo, and again no flavor… I asked for extra spicy and there was no spice at all. This was probably my last time coming here, sorry to say. But give it a go, it might be your cup of tea….you never know!
The guy in the cart is SO friendly and nice. Go support his business!
I ordered a chicken over rice for $5 (+$1 for tip). All the chicken pieces were cuts of flavorful dark meat marinated in a slightly orange sauce. Combined with the white sauce and hot sauce, this definitely made for a very delicious, albeit a bit heavy, meal. This is definitely one of the best deals in FiDi!
Very disappointing, especially after reading all the hype. I had passed by many times in my way to work at BMCC, I kept thinking I'll try it next time. A few days ago I was running late and decided to grab something here quick. I ordered chicken biryani. What I received was some turmeric dyed rice, a soggy, tasteless salad, the toughest driest chicken I've ever eaten, all of this smothered in spicy sauce that failed to resemble any chutneys I've ever had. The egg was about the only good tasting thing in my styrofoam to go container. It all tastes of cheap garam masala, which to me always indicates corner cutting. I'd like to say I'll try again, but look at all the competition around, might as well try something else.
I tried the kati rolls and they were quite good.
Good for the price as well !
A long line is always a good sign.
My first time trying out this famous cart in the Financial District and was not disappointed at all. I tried the chicken biryani on my first visit and naturally, finished my whole plate in one sitting. Right amount of spices and flavor and extremely filling. The price is always right here. $6 is the average price for a full plate of food.
My only complaint was that there was not enough chicken and way too much rice. I noticed this with many places these days though. Also go light on the green sauce if spicy is not your thing.
Will definitely be back to try the halal menu. Plan your lunch accordingly and try out this cart before the brutal cold winter.
My favorite lunch spot! Quick and cheap! $5 for tons of chicken over salad . You can do rice and salad as well but I ll do the healthy option and stick with just salad . It's so tasty especially if you put some of the white sauce. The lines can be long but they move quickly. There are also tons of carts on this corner but this definitely the best tasting.
One of the better food carts in FiDi. For $6-7, you can get a heaping portion of rice with chicken, lamb, or fish (among other delicious items). Note: There can be a bit of a line, but it moves pretty quickly. Definitely a good go-to for lunch in FiDi!
