Bistro Le Steak

“Our server Nick, and service in general, were also exemplary, and the ambiance was a lovely touch of elegant France in the Upper East Side of Manhattan.”

“However, the expense is well worth it as the food is top notch while the staff is friendly and quick.”

“You cannot go wrong with the escargot or the steak they have at a very reasonable price.”

  1. I've always had a good meal at Bisto Le Steak.  I generally get the Onion Soup and Ceasar salad.  Nothing fancy, but filling and tasty.  The last time I was there I got the mussels along with a salad.  The portion sizes are just right and the prices aren't too bad – especially for the area.

The restaurant offers a nice, casual atmosphere.  It does get a bit hot sitting by the windows.

Service has always been friendly and efficient.

I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to come to this restaurant, but when I find myself in the area, it's always a good option.

  2. This little place was pretty busy on New Years night with fancy diners eating steak.

I had a lovely Filet but it was a bit on the charred side. It was still cooked well (medium rare). The frites are very delicious. I ended up eating most of mine and my dining partners frites…

My favorite part of the experience was the current holiday lighting which makes this cozy place vibrant and brightens up the dim dining area a bit. Very romantic. I don't know what it will look like without the lights. Probably still dim, still cozy with a French vibe.

I think I need to get a different cut of meat for my next steak experience which I plan on having here. The prices are not so bad for steak either. The wait staff is very friendly.

  3. Bistro Le Steak has somehow survived for years – despite mediocre food and service.  It is always steadily busy and often packed.  The steaks are not great – often tough and riddled with fat.

I have been here 3 times – usually because friends wanted to go and was never thrilled.

There are way better steak restaurants to try in NYC.

  4. Came here for Thanksgiving dinner at 7:30 PM. A lot of people had the same idea, the Norman Rockwell painting doesn't work for everybody I guess. Good meal, you could order a turkey dinner with all the trimings or off their regular menu. My wife had the turkey and enjoyed it my daughter and I had steak and loved it.  I had the ribeye she had the filet mignon. Butternut squash soup was sweet and delicious as were the mussel appetizer. Steaks done to perfection, medium rare with pomme frites on the side. I will be back and steak on Thanksgiving might be my new tradition. Sorry Norman that painting might need a redo.

  5. It was my third day living in NYC and I was (frankly) tired of ordering pizza, so I told my husband to stop unpacking, we're going out to eat! We stumbled upon Le Steak and I started joking about Pepe Le Pew (you know, the skunk who puts "Le" in front of everything to make it sound French), and then we read the menu and it looks like it had potential. We were blown away. The service was impeccable, the steak was superb, the wine hit the spot and the mussels were divine. Even though we've moved out of the UES to Brooklyn, we're definitely returning to Le Steak in the future for dinner!

  6. Came here strictly for French onion soup and it was just okay. The cheese was kind of clumped in the middle as opposed to crusted over the sides and super stringy – the way I like it. It was also $8.50 for a small bowl.

The bartender was really the star of the show. He was friendly, accommodating, and funny. If we didn't seem like the youngest people in there (by 30 years) I'd probably return.

  7. What happened to this place? Where did all the waiters' French accents disappear to? When did BLS become a diner with a smaller-than-average menu and better-than-average frites? When did a "House Salad" become nothing but lettuce and vinaigrette? When did the goat cheese tart decide that it could leave the kitchen with blackened pastry on the bottom? When did every customer turn 80 years old?

I stop paying attention for 6 months, and look at what happens.

  8. E-Scale: 5/10

I come here for their happy hour menu! The wings are really cheap for the UES as are the drinks

The cocktails aren't spectacular, but for the happy hour price, it is ok.
As far as a regular meal goes, I do like the steak and it's not bad for the price, but I wouldn't come here if I'm looking to be wowed by my meat. Desserts are good, but it seems like everything comes out of a box.

I do like the service here a lot. Waiters are attentive and friendly.
The place can be cramped, especially if they seat you out on the balcony where you're squished in with the air conditioning unit.
