I love interesting fusion restaurants and this did not disappoint. Ordered the Korean beef bourguignon, truffle Mac 'n cheese and mushroom appetizer. Everything was great and was filling for two people. Also, it's BYOB which is always nice. My one complaint is that the place is very small with presumably no AC, so sitting inside on a hot summer night wasn't very comfortable (I swear, I don't know how cooks do it). Also their credit card machine didn't work which we didn't learn until we got the check.
A very small place but the food is oh so good!!
They even have small hooks to hang your jacket at the entrance. At the counter, there are small hooks where you can hang your bags underneath. It is tres convenient especially when space is very limited here.
PROS:
– TRUFFLE MAC AND CHEESE: heavenly goodness. you have got to get this
– FARRO MUSHROOM RISOTTO: another tasty cheesy dish but this was a little too SALTY
– OYSTER PANCAKE – it small for its size compared to the Korean and Chinese pancakes you find but it tastes very good. It contains kimchi and oysters. Another difference is that the oyster pancake is sort of mushy while the Chinese scallion pancakes are very crunchy.
– KOREAN BEEF BOURGUIGNON – the braised beef was very soft and moist. Delicious. It went well with the potatoes and carrots. The dish had a nice touch of finely thin apple slices.
OKAY:
– WATERMELON SALAD – tangy sour taste spin on the watermelon. it's good but I didn't like the cheese pieces with the watermelon that much.
– KIMCHI BOUILLABAISSE (fisherman stew): contains mussel, shrimp, fried tofu, kimchi. This was okay for me. The seafood was fresh and it's just a tad bit spicy but nothing overwhelming but taste wise it didn't really jump out at me. It's unique and I like the chef's spin on it by adding in gnocchi in it however I had better seafood Korean stew at BCD Tofu house on 34th street.
CON:
– FRENCH FRIES – the fries were kind of on the burnt side and the smoky sauce was OK. You can definitely skip on the fries. This did not wow me at all.
– Kind of PRICEY for small dishes but I am glad the dishes weren't that big at the same time because I was able to try more without stuffing myself.
Note: They ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS now and they are BYOB. They do not serve tap water so bring your own water unless you want to pay $3 for bottled water.
I was a bottomless pit the weekend that I stopped by Bistro Petit for my 12th lunch. I wasn't so hungry that I would eat an entree, but did order their fries because I had a ketchup craving to satisfy and also decided to try their truffle mac and cheese.
Cute little bistro, with one small table outside and two inside. Not to mention, a few stools near the window. I love the open kitchen here and didn't interact very much with the staff, but they seemed nice enough.
1. Truffle mac and cheese–it was really truffle penne, but we won't split hairs. It was decent, and I appreciate that there was a decent amount of truffle oil involved, as I hate to be robbed of that once it's promised to me in the title. I wasn't impressed by these arbitrary panko breadcrumbs on top which did contributed very little to the dish overall. Quite frankly, could've done without them, but the pasta was pretty tasty. I don't know that I would order it again, but am hoping to give other things on the menu a try sometime to see if we can make this 3 a 4.
2. French fries with their house smoked ketchup–these little potatoes are seasoned very generously, and well, I might add. However, they weren't cooked to perfection and while I enjoyed the taste, I wasn't feeling their texture so much. They should have been crisp and they were a slightly soggy, instead. I hate that in a French fry…poor guy (yeah, I'm talking about the spud). I will say that the seasoning saved them, but I wasn't a huge fan of this smoked ketchup they had going on. Maybe it's just me or maybe I should have ordered differently. At least they weren't greasy!
This was a decent experience for the most part and I wouldn't shun this place because it seems the vast majority of people enjoy their meals here, but I'm hoping this was a lazy Sunday and happy there had been 11 lunches before this, because I wasn't thrilled. Maybe next time?
Bummed to say that I wasn't so impressed with this place and I have been wanting to try it for a long time. Could be my bad, because there are certain tastes i'm not into or it could've been the time of day, as it was empty during lunch time.
The place IS as small as everyone says with counter tops that have 4-5 stools and we sat at a small 2 person table. The bathroom is actually through the kitchen doors and from the counter tops you can watch the chefs make your food.
I ordered the beef bourguignon and the bf ordered the truffle mac and cheese. I don't particularly like kimchi, but figured i'd try the sandwich the way it was supposed to be rather than take it out… I ate the whole thing, which was pretty petit, and it's not something I would get again with the slaw. The bf, on the other hand, loved his truffle mac and cheese and I thought it was pretty good as well. The lunch/brunch menu is a little small so we didn't really try anything else.
I wouldn't mind coming back to try the dinner which sounds great, but i'm not so much a fan of the lunch. Glad I tried it though!
The most amazing hidden gem ever!!!!
In the middle of Wilhelmsburg there is a tiny byob restaurant and we found it by chance looking for food at 11pm at night..the chef was so nice that he offered to fully serve us, offered a seat outside on a warm may night…starting with grilled artichokes and saffron aioli – wow!
For main we had the Kobe burger – so juicy, meat done medium and all of it served with home cut fries. The fries tasted oven roasted, they were not at all greasy, really delicious flavours. The sole was the second main – that dish melted in my mouth, it's probably the best thing I ate during the week in NewYork and I had a lot of really good food!! It was done with a crabmeat crust and loads of lemon juice, there was also spinach served with the sole.
the location is small, when they say "Petit" they really mean it. but hey great things come in small packages right? ABOSLUTELY.
Bistro Petit is so good that you will be back for more and more and more. the food the service, the warmth of the staff really makes this place shine. Prices can't be beat and you really leave with a full stomach and a smile on your face. be sure to ask for the daily specials and try something new.
If you're in the mood for some good french food then this is the place to be.

Met up with friends for brunch at Bistro Petit one Sunday afternoon. It's a tiny ol' thing with a handful of metal seats lined along the large, bright windows and another few facing the small bustling kitchen.
Diana and I shared the truffle mac and cheese which was light, creamy and perfumed with truffle oil. I wonder if I could wear truffle oil as a perfume. I wonder the kinds of boys I would get…probably the ones with great taste!
Our main dish was the kimchi bouillabaisse, a seafood stew served in an adorable black pot filled to the brim with shrimp, scallops, pollack fish and mussels. Everything was delicious. The seafood was cooked perfectly, and the mussels were fantastically fresh. The broth was so deeply flavorful. Everyone's favorite part of the stew, however, was the rice gnocchi which we made sure we ate every last bit of. "Like soup tapioca!" Diana proclaimed – which only a bubble tea fiend like ourselves would appreciate. So chewy and delightful to eat.
And of course, it is only fitting to cap off such a lovely, charming meal with French doughnuts, freshly made to order. They arrived piping hot in a cute little fry pan which kept these five beautiful, powder-sugar-dusted gems nice and warm until we were ready to eat them. (Which was immediately.) And oh! Such bright, sparkly joy! These airy, eggy doughnuts were so soft, tender and light – absolute heaven.
I am a new fan of Bistro Petit, and I can't wait to try more menu items soon (though the bouillabaisse and doughnuts are must-orders for anyone!). A couple of things to note though:
1. Cash only.
2. No reservations.
3. Gets pretty sweaty in warmer weather.
4. Bring your own water (they do not serve tap water), but they do sell bottled water and other drinks.
5. The place is self-serve (place orders at the register).
Now I just have to think what flavor doughnuts I want to try next. Can you tell I have a one track mind? And that track is doughnuts.
