This Thai place is one of the better places I've been to, but I was kind of expecting more from Queens. It's more like 3.5 stars.
We ordered the Roti and chicken massaman curry, pineapple fried rice, chicken pad Thai, beef Kaeng Kiew Warn (green curry), and chicken panang curry. The Roti was different because it is usually a sheet of thinly pan fried bread; instead, the portion size was extremely small due to cutting the Roti into triangular pieces and would feed one person. The curry dipping sauce was packed with flavor.
The pineapple fried rice was strangely lacking pineapple flavor. It was a little better than the average fried rice. The chicken pad Thai had the perfect harmony of sweet, salty, sour, and savory. The chicken was not overcooked, as it is in most pad Thai dishes. The beef green curry mostly tasted like kaffir lime leaf and it overpowered the dish. However, the bell peppers were still crunchy and the spice level was just right. A gripe would be that there were only a couple pieces of eggplant in it. The chicken panang curry was much better than the green curry. The vegetables are the same as the green curry, with string beans instead of eggplant. Again, the veggies were still crunchy. The panang curry was silky and just thinking about it is making me hungry.
For the way the restaurant carries itself out to be, a higher-end, upscale, and therefore, more expensive Thai place, the presentation should really be neater. The curry was plated very sloppily with sauce all over the edge of the bowls.
I would rate BKNY 3.5 stars.
For Queens, I was expecting better. It is no secret that Thai food isn't my favorite BUT my family loves it so I find myself at Thai restaurants pretty often.
The space itself is beautiful and contemporary. Very open and tastefully decorated. The bar is right in the middle which also serves as a great waiting spot if your party doesn't arrive all at once (but they will seat you if at least more than half has arrived). The 9 of us were seated at a round table with a rotating middle which was perfect for ordering family style.
We got a bunch of appetizers and entrees to share. I wasn't a fan of the appetizers. Overall, greasy and forgettable. The curry puffs were drenched in oil and the dumplings were unusually soggy. All of our apps came out quickly though.
Our entrees were much better and the other 8 people at the table really enjoyed it. I won't go into details about the flavor because my judgment of a type of cuisine that I already don't like probably isn't fair to the restaurant. I've had better Thai elsewhere but this food was still pretty good. But, my allergies did not bother me at all which leads me to suspect that they don't use fish sauce and other traditional ingredients.
Dessert was the best part of the meal for me! Very fresh and delicious. The taro custard was amazing and a big portion. I would also recommend the fried bananas with ice cream. This was clearly made to order.
Service was lacking but only because they appeared to be understaffed. Can't really blame the servers for this but on a busy Friday night this can get tricky. We found ourselves waiting a while and struggling to flag someone down when we were ready to order, needed more water, etc. They also don't seem to be a fan of clearing empty drink glasses or beer bottles until the very end of the meal, so our table got very crowded.
Always a great spot for dinner. My favorite is the pad ka prow with chicken (medium spice) as well as their Panang Curry and Pad See Ew… Also for appetizer the vegetable cakes and calamari are really good. Don't forget to top off with dessert — Lady M cake and/or Fried Ice Cream! The service is good and it's a great place for a date or just a nice dinner with family/friends.
Solid dinner spot! This is a nice place to go to feel more upscale without breaking the bank. Entrees range from $10-30. Their Thai iced tea is pretty strong. The best things that I had were the pad thai, pork fried rice, and red curry dish. I wouldn't get the pad see ew, it was a bit soggy. I also like their sticky rice with everything 🙂
Servers are also really nice! Had a great experience, and will definitely come back.
It was just ok. Cant say I would come here a second time.
G had some sort of eggplant with rice with mild seasonings and it was way to spicy hot. He mostly scooped his food out of the sauce to avoid the powerful seasonings.
I had a drunken noodle with chicken dish which was served in a soup bowl which could have served 4 people. First off, this dish should have been called the boiling cauldron of fire. If the waiter had spilled this on me as he placed it on the table I would have been in the burn unit of the local hospital. This dish was hot boiling and spicy. I ordered medium spice thinking that would be toned down from the usual thai hot. Was I wrong. This bowl of stuff was so hot I think my tonsils and tongue tried to escape thru my lungs. Totally not edible. When the waitress finally returned, she said that thai food is spicy (could hardly understand her, but I think thats what she said) in any case she took the bowl back and they basically dumped the hot spicy broth out and filled it with less spicy broth, but still boiling hot.
This meal was just not doing much for me.
The interior of this place is very lovely and you would think from the outside being on a non-descript block that the insides would be plane and dated but surprisingly not at all. Its very cozy and has a beautiful round bar in the middle of the restaurant.
The food was not memorable and needing to send it back just bothers me. I rarely accept food if its not good on the first delivery. Its not that I am some sort of food snob, but it blows my whole dining experience when the food is not right the first time.
3 stars for the Thai iced tea. Nuff said. Still trying to get my tongue and tonsils to come out of hiding.
BKNY is good but I've had better Thai food. The Pad Thai was good but nothing special.
The restaurant does have a bar/club atmosphere but without the dancing and music.
That said, I'd would give BKNY three yelp stars.
Yes Andrea G. has popped my BKNY Thai cherry tonight along with her friend. I was hoping for our very own corner booth #score that way everyone is comfortable sitting on those cushioned seats. This is my third Thai restaurant because before my allergy to peanuts really hold me back.
Appetizer:
Crispy Calamari just the sweet chili sauce no peanuts please…it wasn't so crispy but I can taste the squid rings
Noodles:
Andrea G – Shrimp Pad See Ew…her plating looks like a big portion
Her friend – Chicken Pad Thai
me: Chicken Pad Kee Mao…my plating made my dish look small and not quite fulfilling as the flat noodles with dried…wish there was more sauce man
The service and the food come out quickly from the kitchen. We have our leftovers to go and I can stress enough to the server that I don't want my dish to touch the pad thai as the peanut traces can cross contaminate…it freaks me out!
Dessert:
Fried Icecream shared by Andrea and her friend
Lady M *Mille Crepe Cake* Regular flavored – the hype for this cake is a thumbs down for me finally crossed off trying a Lady M cake
I had better Thai food at my favorite spot Thanya yelp.com/biz/thanya-thai…!
I am obsessed with this place! Everything about it is great!
Lychee martini's are my favorite even though the sangria is delicious too.
The Crab appetizer is so tender and juicy.
The Tom Kha (coconut soup) is huge and amazinggggggg!!! The presentation of it is also beautiful and comes over a fire top. I wouldn't recommend it for take out, because you just don't get as much and it's so good, that you will regret it!
The Tofu Pad Thai is delicious and also a good size portion.
The service is also always on point. The staff is very professional always courteous.
I can't wait to keep trying the rest of their menu!
