Black Barn
“On the menu tonight- chicharron- awesome, bone marrow- slippery deliciousness, cauliflower steak- wow, did I just pay $26 for cauliflower?”
“My friend had the BBQ beef ribs with crispy shoe string fries which were delicious.”
“Amish Chicken ($26)
While a chicken entree may be viewed as a bit common, if not plebeian, the Amish Chicken at Black Barn was anything but ordinary.”

I had dinner at the Black Barn on a business trip. It was the perfect place to relax after a long day. Excellent location in Flatiron and the decor was very nice with a couch and coffee table type setting.
Scallops were killer. Given the farm theme I wish they had more salads on the menu, but everything came out great and the waitstaff was warm and helpful. Definitely worth a trip back!
Black Barn brunch is quite the nice experience. Walking in you immediately feel the rustic vibe of the place, strewn with wooden beams, high ceilings, an expansive seating area, and a three piece guitar crew. Never did I think eating in a barn could be elegant, but it kinda was (maybe black barns differ). Anyway, see menu suggestions below…
Winners:
Egg yolk-Ricotta filled Raviolo (best of show)
Vegetable goat cheese focaccia with poached eggs
Eggs Benny
Double Black (cold brew & scotch)
and our waiter, who wasn't insulted when we asked if he worked seasonally at the Ren Faire (to be fair, he really did look like the one of the knights).
Skip: the Farmers Omelet, not bc it's bad, but bc there is just so much better on the menu.
Overall, the solid brunch came out to $200, which isn't that bad considering the 2 bottles of bubbly ordered (among other drinks). If I ever choose to respect myself and turn away the usual AYCD brunch options, Black Barn is high on the list
Had drinks and one dish here for my friend's casual drop-by birthday and had to Yelp though I haven't eaten much there.
All the food, however, looked great as it was being shuttled to nearby bar tables. There are three menus: a bar/pub one with pizza, a couple burgers, salads, oysters, and cheese, a bistro version, and a fancier more composed menu.
The wine list is fairly priced by the glass. My 13 Malbec was good and the pour nice.
But the roasted cauliflower (which I expected to be just a "steak" rather than a large entree-sized salad) blew my mind. Atop raita (Indian yogurt concoction), the salad was full of cucumbers, pears, and other veggies.
DELICIOUS vegetarian entree though they call it a starter. I can't wait to go back and try other food.
It's also spacious, a great and casual lounge. At 10:15PM on a Saturday, it was not crowded and a perfect place to sit with a larger group.
Very impressive.
Also, because I walked the wrong way on 26th, I passed something I'd never seen before: Upland. I live uptown and usually not in Flatiron up this far (usually low 20s). It is magical–and I've not even seen the menu. When I asked my sommelier/foodie friend about it his eyes widened and he nodded approvingly. I take this as a good sign and will try it soon.
Not overly impressed. Don't get me wrong – we had a nice time here. The atmosphere was very cool. The server was very gracious. However, the food itself fell short for me. Not worth what we paid for this meal.
To Start:
1. Curried Cauliflower Steak – this was the most impressive looking item here. I didn't actually try it but my friend really enjoyed this item.
2. Maine Lobster Salad – terrible. Watery and flavorless.
3. Bone Marrow – this was just OK, a bit on the dry side. What saved it is the bread/butter combination they put out which is actually quite good.
4. Truffle parmesan gnocchi & brussels sprouts for sides – not bad but overall forgettable.
To Finish:
1. BBQ Beef Ribs – I was really excited about this item since they "slow cook it for 5 hours" and it "falls off the bone". What I got was gristle- tough meat that was hard to pull off the bone. I left most of it unfinished and no one asked if I enjoyed the meal.
2. Pan Seared Striped Bass – my dining buddy hated this menu item as well. Said it was watery and not very tasty.
All in all – if you must go here, get some wine and the apps. Maybe we got the wrong thing, but I probably wouldn't return.
Total fail on dinner. Neither apps nor mains nor dessert were inspiring or even "that good" and service forgot about us for 45 minutes in between apps and mains. They did comp us dessert but like I said… it was a nice gesture but meh dessert.
Very nice room, about 15 seats at the bar. Three taps plus maybe ten beers in bottles. Bartender was spot on. Limited food menu but a nice selection. Music this afternoon sounded like BB King. I might try them for lunch or brunch. I see that they have fried chicken as part of the brunch menu.
Came for brunch a while back and while I really enjoyed the look & feel as well as ambiance of the place, it was very average. Friends and I ordered many brunch dishes, including the burger and the (weird) sausage pancake, and honestly the best thing was probably the bread and the French fries. You shouldn't have to pay $$$ for carbs though. But Black Barn did have a live jazz band and service was really great. Just don't expect to wow anyone.
This was my second visit to the Black Barn. It was for lunch with a colleague. The menu has lots of interesting and healthy selections. Everything was tasty. Lots of drink options too. The service is prompt and there is a nice space between tables to allow for conversation.
