  1. I came here for a burger "Civil War" event, pitting two different burgers against each other. I got to sample both and they were really damn good! The meat is just soooooo flavorful. They put two patties on the burger but make them smaller and thinner, each one on it's own is almost kids sized. It means less cooking time, less chance of them being overdone, and the results were fantastic. The cheese is delicious, but the star of the show were the bourbon caramelized onions. With those babies on there I didn't even need condiments. Nice beer selection (Abita Purple Haze).

We got an order of aioli fries to go with our burgers and they were amazing. I'm a huge ketchup fan, but OMG, aioli and scallions are an amazing alternative. So good, we pretty much inhaled them.

They also have a location in Alphabet City, which is great because I'll do pretty much anything to avoid coming into Midtown.

  2. They do get credit for providing just a little distinction while maintaining simplicity. Their menu is straightforward. You are offered a small but nice variety of different burger combinations, nothing too obscure to distract you from the quality of the meat itself.

However, the burger itself is simply satisfactory. Among the three burgers I've had on two different occasions, the patties did not seem to distinguish themselves. Even if cooked rare and medium rare as requested, they lacked juice and some flavor. I would guess they are lower fat than elsewhere so take that as you will.

The masterpiece was the best I have had from Black Iron. The excess ingredients really elevate it in a way that may not have occurred without them.

Patty melt is a slight but nice deviation. The sourness of the rye bread, again, pairs well with the simplicity of the patty. I thought the Black Iron –which I assume is their signature– was sadly forgettable. Sweet potato fries were great.

Design of the seating area is rather defeating. It is as if Black Iron is trying to achieve the urban rustic aesthetic on a very low budget with faux brick veneers, exposed HVAC and dim lighting fixtures. They are maximizing their seating real estate in a single corridor layout so be prepared to have inadvertent conversations with the table next to you.

If you can, the bar is actually be the best place to stay here.

  3. I can't wait to go back.  That should tell you all you need to know about this restaurant.

Went there with my family on a Saturday late afternoon – made a reservation but didn't need one cause the place was empty.  Here's my take:

The upsides:  The burgers and fries were good – REALLY good.  I had the Classic with the fixins (mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, onion and swiss cheese), my sister had the salmon burger, my niece had the double bacon cheeseburger and my nephew had the regular cheeseburger. We all agreed that our burgers were delicious – the only thing I could say is that I should have gotten the double patty as the single is a little on the small side.  Now about the fries…….OMG……I ordered the truffle fries without the cheese, my sister ordered the Ai-Oli fries with scallions, bacon and ai-oli dressing and my niece ordered the herb garlic fries – we were all in French fry haven.  They were all delicious and the best part is that they weren't greasy as some places can be.  The fries come large enough to share so one order of any of them will feed two people.

I have to say the service was good too as we were seated promptly and our waitress checked on us continuously to make sure we were ok.

The only downside:  We ordered a pitcher of sangria – definitely would NOT do that again as it tasted more like a pitcher of fruit juice — definitely not worth the $30 it costs.

I'm definitely going back as I was looking at the next table and they had a milkshake that looked like heaven so I will post an update as soon as I can.

  4. This place was AWESOME! I came here on a Monday night and heard it would be packed… but it was not. I had made a reservation for 815 but definitely did not need one. My friend and I sat at the bar and got apple cider and Allagash Wheat and then sat at a table once our other friend got there. Service wasn't superb, especially for how empty it was, but the food made up for it.

We all got burgers- I made my own with bacon, cheddar and the "black iron ai-oli" sauce which was AAAAAAAMAZING (a mix of mayo, parsley, garlic and olive oil) and is a necessity. The place was pretty dark and VERY cold but a cool atmosphere.

They also look like they have some pretty delicious looking desserts but we were too full. The burgers come in 1 or 2 patties and the 1 patty was MORE than enough.

Great spot, but ***CASH ONLY**** but the burgers were all between 10-15 depending how many add ons you get – very inexpensive, very worth it

  5. My second time here, I was reminded of the crummy service. I forgot about that when writing the first review, but I remember now. Upon entering Black Iron Burger, you're left waiting for quite some time before the hostess finally emerges and asks you how many, without so much as a smile. As soon as you tell her, she tells you to wait, and scurries away again, as if your very presence is preventing her from something more important. When you finally get seated, you have to flag down the waitress to order, for water, for more water, and for the check. She never comes to check on you and always seems exasperated when you flag her down. This was my experience both times and I don't think I'll be coming back.

The burger toppings here are pretty unique. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill burger place. I had the hash brown burger with turkey instead of beef. Unfortunately, they don't do substitutions, so I had to "build" the burger myself, which cost a bit more. Burger was definitely interesting. Aioli fries were really good. I'd definitely come back to try some other items.

  6. On a friend's recommendation, my friend and I came here for dinner before heading over to see Aladdin. It wasn't too busy on a Saturday at 5pm when we arrived, but by the time we left around 7:30 it was getting pretty packed. That being said, you can make reservations. Our meal consisted of herb garlic fries, my friend ordered the Little Italy burger, and I ordered the Chicken Club sandwich. My friend really enjoyed the Little Italy burger. I had a bite & it was very tasty. The chicken club was ok, but not mind-blowing. Given the name of the restaurant, I'd probably just order a burger next time. The herb garlic fries were a nice side and a good size for sharing since the burgers and sandwiches don't come with sides. I also really liked their beer selection. A lot of craft beer options, some local. Definitely put some new breweries on my radar, so I'm looking forward to checking them out. I'd definitely recommend this spot for a cheap and quick meal in Midtown.

  7. Love love love love burgers and I love their selection here. Not to mention how cheap their burgers are. I love my burger patty to be flatter than thick because it is juicier to me and more flavorful. I forgot what the name was but I had the one with the egg on top and it was so good along with some sweet potato fries. MMMM can't wait to come back!!

  8. Black Iron Burger is one of my favorite places in Midtown. While the location is small and busy, the food is excellent, well priced, and consistent. Small hamburger or normal sized (a rare, and often good, option), the food is consistently good and priced reasonably. Respectable beer list, fantastic fry options, and a good vibe. In have never had bad service either. Perfect place to not only have an excellent burger, but also the perfect place to have a smaller burger if you're not as hungry.
