Black Iron Burger

“we ordered the black iron burger, the masterpiece, free fries (thanks yelp!), and ai-oli fries.”

“Just the right amount of juiciness offset the savory taste of horseradish in both the cheese melted on it and the mayo smeared on the top bun.”

“Definitely a good place to stop in before a show at MSG (or any other time!)”

  1. So I know there's this new trend of burgers going around these days, and I've been pretty on top of it. Beef burgers are the norm, but now they can be made of anything. Buffalo burger? Eaten it. Turkey burger? Gobbled it down. Elk burger? Sure, I hate reindeer imposters as much as the next guy. But when I heard of the black iron burger, I knew I had to rise to the challenge.

I know what you're thinking, and the answer is yes, I did prepare for my showdown. I went on an extensive two week training regimen of brushing my teeth extra (for the fluoride) and even ordering a set of steel dentures, a shady but technically legal strategy.

Then, I made my move. Like a champion fighter, I entered the restaurant, dentures ready, heart pounding, adrenaline flowing. I ordered one black iron burger, and said a silent goodbye to my teeth. I was as ready as I would ever be.

Imagine my shock at my first bite when my teeth sunk right through the bun, through the BEEF patty, the surprisingly delicious horseradish mayo, the blend of spices…with not a colored metal to be found! I felt misled, but at the same time, a bit relieved that I wouldn't have to try to bite through solid iron (in retrospect, metal burgers seem like a questionable business strategy). Dentures out, I finished my burger along with the free fries (thanks Yelp!) and really enjoyed my meal.

Kind of a letdown but in a good way, I guess. 4 stars.

  2. Really solid burger and a convenient location near penn station. Prices are reasonable. Prompt and friendly service. Had many TVs-all dedicated to March Madness which was appreciated.

Had the BIB patty melt and the onions were carmelized to perfection. Good amount of cheese. The sandwich bread was toasted well for a nice crunch that doesn't hurt the roof of your mouth.

Checked into yelp for the free fries which were subpar. I liked how they were shoestring-y and had some potato skins on them still, but they weren't crispy at all. In all fairness, I'm not a huge fan of potatoes though

  3. Perfect quasi-below-the-radar stop for pre-MSG drinks and food.  It's just far away from the Garden that I was able to walk in and get a table for 3 with no wait (also open seats at the bar) at 6pm before a college hoops double dip at 7.  It filled up around 8 (the bigger game tipped off at 9, so the pre-game crowd was staggered; maybe it's more crowded before Knicks/Rangers).

I actually thought the food was even better than the Alphabet City original; I went with the Black Iron with bacon.  Horseradish cheddar and horesradish mayo are just enough to make it a little different; juicy and satisfying when you are desperately craving a good burger.  The ai-oli fries and loaded fries were both really good, but essentially the same.  Lots of interesting brews on tap for an area appropriate $7 a pint ($4.50 happy hour) or a steal-for-the-area $19/pitcher.

Note to management, though…fix the front door, which sticks open sometimes and is pretty annoying in the cold.

  4. OMG the mushroom truffle burger!!!!  Don't like mushrooms or onions?  Doesn't even matter…just get it anyways. It's THAT good!

Been here like 2 or 3 times since it's down the street from my office. I don't come in often since I try and eat healthy most of the time…and this is def not the place to come when you're trying to be good!  For those days when you don't give a #$&* and just want some good food…come here!!  I've always sat at the bar and had great service. Friendly bartender.  They have a decent happy hour too!

    Seriously though…just do it.

  5. Burger, fries, beer, and a milkshake. There are a limited number of things that can make me happier than this meal combination.

This is a solid place if you're craving one or all of the above. The regular fries are better than the herb garlic ones. Get the free one with the Yelp check-in!

I opted for the Black Iron Burger and loved it! Nothing beats Minetta Tavern for me, but it was definitely a really great burger. The vanilla milkshake was a nice addition to the meal.

Overall, really great place to go for happy hour or a quick dinner by Penn Station. Highly recommended!

  6. Stopped by for a quick bite before the basketball game at MSG.
Tried their Black Iron Burger which was not bad, but also not great.  It was filling and done as requested (medium-well),.  Ordered side of fries, rings and vanilla shake to wash down.  Quick and courteous service.  Did not break the bank.  Definitely a place to grab a satisfying meal before an event in the area.

  7. quick and friendly service with a fun tasty menu! i like that they offer half sized pints here. trust, i enjoy beer but sometimes i tend to drink a full pint very slow, which amuses my fiance. thus the half pint is perfect for me to enjoy one of their tasty drafts!

on this visit i had the truffle mushroom burger and mike built his own. both were cooked perfectly medium with tons of flavor! don't forget to check in on yelp so you can get a free side of fries (1 per table)! oh and go ahead and order a side of that aioli sauce to dip in um too. i also suggest treating yourself to onion rings too, with some more sauce on the side. i love sauce.

we had just missed happy hour when we got seated, so there was still a good crowd hanging out towards the front.

  8. this place is sooooooooooooooooooo goood. we came here on a friday night and did not regret it at all. we were able to get a seat right away since it was decently packed. thank goodness we chose this place since world of beer was way too crowded. we ordered the black iron burger, the masterpiece, free fries (thanks yelp!), and ai-oli fries. the burgers were cooked just right and the fries were amazing. i would come back here again just to try their other burgers and order the ai-oli fries. the beer selection was good. i'm not a huge beer fan so i was very happy they had pear and apple cider beers for me to try. there's 3 tvs around the restaurant so you're definitely able to catch a good game on while munching on good food
