I feel like this place struck gold overnight thanks to the milkshakes (that bring all the boys and buzz to the yard). Obviously the milkshakes are delicious. It's just loads and loads of every dessert possible, so how could it not be. The burgers themselves are standout on their own and I've been a couple times just to get their burgers. It's nothing crazy like their milkshakes, but just good ole dependable quality. It's a smaller place so go during off peak times if you are with a larger group and get ready to loosen your belt.
The burgers and milkshakes are delicious. But are they worth the 3 and a half hour wait that I endured to try them? No. No burger or milkshake is worth wait that long.
Before you come, I must warn you about the inside of the place. I thought that Black Tap was a bar/restaurant with tables and seating inside. However, after finally waiting three and a half hours to get inside I discovered that it was one bar table with fifteen stools at it. You are literally elbow to elbow with fourteen other people you waited with. It is extremely hot and uncomfortable. It makes the wait less worth it when you see how unattractive and small the place is inside.
If it was an hour wait, I would say it was worth it. The burgers and shakes are really great and worth trying. However, three + hours is simply disappointing and not worth any wait.
Right after i got off the plane from LAX and checked into my hotel, I went straight to BlackTap for the Birthday Shake! A collab with Magnolia's cupcake to celebrate it's 20th anniversary! It was perfect as it was my bday weekend. The wait outside was ridiculous (about a 1-2 hour wait but luckily, they let me in since I was solo and I got a seat asap! haha talk about Disneyland single rider status!
The cupcake shake was amazing! Magnolia's is my favorite cupcake shop so this shake was dreamy!
Can't wait to go back to try their burgers and other shakes
If there is a better cheeseburger in NYC I have not had it. Like the James Taylor song, Black Tap at Bryant Park on Monday nights–during the HBO Movie nights understands what an American cheeseburger is like. A burger of the right amount of ground beef slowly broiled and turned so that the juices are kept in side, with lettuce, tomato, and some special sauce. I prefer a little raw onion, and pickle, but cannot argue with the quality of this burger. I cannot comment on any of there other dishes, but if you have a top notch cheeseburger, you do not need much else. Black Tap has made the food booths for the Bryant Park movie night into a little bit of Paradise!
In this day and age, there are a lot of restaurants (and other businesses) that have become overly popular after Instagram sensation. It can be both good and bad. It obviously is great for the restaurant, but if I found out about that place through this route, then, about the time I discovered it through Instagram, so did other hundreds and thousands of people…creating long lines and/or reservation is really hard to get. The Black Tap was one of those places (for me). I kept seeing this crazy, colorful, huge milkshakes on the Instagram!
There are about 20 seats around the bar, and if you are the first 20 people to get in (which we were), then you are all set! The next crowds had to wait until someone leaves, and from what we saw, that could take anywhere from 1 hour or longer. This makes the line moves really slow, after the first group goes in.
We ordered a Pizza Burger to share, and then ordered Cotton Candy and Sweet N' Salty shakes. The burger was huge, juicy, and delicious. The shakes are work of art, and was enormous and tasty… Everything I wanted them to be! We didn't get to finish the entire shakes, since it was whole lot of sweetness and all, but it was really amazing. And, we got to meet Gayle King (thank you for the photo Gayle!) before we left, which was added bonus! The staff was nice and friendly, took a really nice photo of us with the shakes! Read my full review of this restaurant and food on my blog, foodlovergirl.
This location is apparently smaller than the newer location but since we already arrived and were in line, we didn't want to go to the other restaurant to get back in line.
Since there is limited seating around the bar area, if you aren't the first group to be seated, you'll be waiting an hour for the first group to finish their orders.
Once we were seated, our orders were quickly put in.
I tried the old fashioned burger that came with a side of fries. The portion size was small. The burgers were decent but definitely not worth the long wait considering the cramp space and price.
We ordered two shakes to try the chocolate chip cookie shake and cookies n' cream shake. Both were huge but standard milk shakes. Besides the decorations on the sides, I'm not sure it's worth the price tag.
It felt like they were rushing us the entire time trying to get the next group in.
Went right before it opened and was seated right away. People who came 30 min after us didn't have a problem either.
They make you order the shake right away with your food which is kind of annoying because there isn't even enough room on the counter for fries and a burger and the shake. The shake is also really messy on its own so that doesn't help.
I had the black tap burger salad and it was so yummy. I loved it. The fries were just okay, leaves somewhat more to be desired in terms of crispiness.
We tried the sweet and salty shake… which I think should include the word "peanut butter" in its name bc that is the predominant flavor. Wasn't expecting that, but thankfully we like the chocolate peanut butter combo. Didnt care for the huge mountain of whipped cream on top. I just wanted to get to the shake part. And it's already super sweet as is. And if you don't drink/eat it fast enough it just all falls apart – like literally off the cup and onto the counter.
TLDR: The burgers/burger salads are super good. If there's a line though, I wouldn't wait over 20 minutes for the other stuff.
This place was awesome!! The music was awesome the staff were all extremely nice. The cool part about it is that they have hooks for your bags or coats which was convenient since it is a small area. And they have outlets to charge your phone so that was also cool. Milk shakes were a bit pricy but they are worth it. Some cost 15$ and some are I believe were either 14 or 16$. I recommend not going on the weekends because the wait on the line is insane. Can take up to 4 hours I was told. I waited an hour or so on a Friday afternoon so it wasn't too bad. But overall they are awesome. They're cheese burgers were also amazing as well.
