Since I was in Cancun I saw all the pictures of the different milkshakes and they looked AWESOME, I'm I to sweet things, I'm a chocolate and cookie loves so I knew I had to try them on my trip to NYC. So first of all it was quite disappointed that they only had like 4 different milkshakes ( plus the regulars like vanilla, chocolate, strawberry) so I ordered the cookie milkshake of course, I LOVED how it looked it was a dream BUT… Yeap there's a but, I couldn't drink it :/ it was sweet plus sugar so it was EXTREMELY SWEET, it kinda hurts your throat because of the sweetness of this, I'm Inlove of Jhonny rockets milkshakes but this one here was just too much and also it made me feel bad that there are only waitresses just taking your orders THATS IT and just ONE guy going up and down the stairs with all the food and just ONE guy for all the milkshakes, like please get a elevator for the kids so the waitresses can do something too it's so unfair and I don't need to feel like that while I'm eating so it's hard to say this but this place it's a NO NO to me, I'm giving 2 stars because of the guys and their hard work and also because my waitress was a sweet girl… I also like the place and music, such a shame.
My friends and I bit the bullet and finally decided to give the long waits for these milkshakes a try. We came on a Friday night around 7:30 pm and only waited about 45 mins – 1 hr. Word of advice…come in small groups or even number groups. We noticed that the odd number groups waited a lot longer to be seated than groups of 2 or 4. We ordered food to start. I had the bison burger and my friends had Californian, Falafel, and Lamb Burger Salad. For Milkshakes, we had Sweet n Salty and The Cookie. All around, the food and drinks were exceptional. The burger is one of the best I've had in the city and the milkshake I would say speaks for itself!
Ambience is very cool. It's a dark, wooden bar kind of feel. The throwback music was pumping (a bit loud, but I didn't mind Roses by Outkast blasting) and the clientele was enjoying it. Our servers were great too. Very patient and friendly. Water was always refilled and considering the waits outside, we never felt rushed!
Definitely recommend giving this place a shot. We overall waited 1-1 1/2 hours for our food to first arrive, it is long, but worth it in my opinion. This place is definitely an experience worth checking out if you want a craft burger and delicious milkshake.
Wait was around 20-25 minutes for a table for 2 at 6pm on a very rainy Monday night. Not bad.
Wait service was very friendly, polite, and did his job well. The Mexico City burger was really very good – in fact I'd almost say the burgers were better than the shakes! My friend had the Buffalo Burger and she was equally impressed.
I had the PB shake and it was good, but I suspect no human being can eat that whole thing plus a burger. It's fit to share.
We asked the waiter why they had empty tables yet a line, and he informed us that the kitchen is "too small" to prep all of the food so they have to stop admitting customers when they're backed up. What a terrible arrangement. Not only that but the back dining room doesn't have nearly as many tables as could fit comfortably – it was really spacious.
On top of that, despite the fact that they weren't letting new patrons in, the bus staff must have been trained to clear tables immediately. So every few minutes they came by rather aggressively to clear (or ask to clear) items. No, we're still eating. Nope, still eating. It was annoying.
Wouldn't likely return because for me it's a bucket list item that has now been checked off. The burgers are worth returning for but not considering the wait.
Hmm, I thought I had written a review after I went here the first time, but I guess not.
I went with a friend on the day after christmas, I guess before the whole milkshake craze totally blew up, and so we just walked in and didn't have a wait. It was good, we split a burger and brussels sprouts. Loved the brussels sprouts! Then we decided to split one of the milkshakes. They had run out of the cookie one, so we went with the cotton candy. It was good, but I was hoping to try a different one. Besides for all the add ons it was just a regular old vanilla milkshake.
Then the milkshakes blew up, and I'd heard that they normally had long wait times, and hadn't attempted to go back. My friend was coming to the city to hang out, and she had mentioned trying to go here a few times, and then I saw for this weekend they were doing a collaboration shake with Magnolia Bakery for their 20th birthday, and I wanted to try it. So I figured we'd give it a shot. We looked up the time it opened Sunday, and it said 12, so we planned our morning around that, so we'd make it there just around noon. We got there at noon and there was already a line in front, but not too bad. They have a bouner out front, who is actually very nice. He quoted us about a 35 min wait, but it was more like an hour. Also I had asked when they opened and he said 11, they just changed their hours, FYI. We waited in line, and finally got in a little after 1. The weird thing I noticed is that the place wasn't packed. You'd think with crazy lines out the door they'd fill the place in, but there were quite a few empty tables. It's nice I guess when you're eating and things aren't crazy inside, but it's annoying when you're outside waiting and there are open tables inside. So we browsed the menu, and of course wanted to try the birthday milkshake. We asked about it though, and our waiter informed us they had run out already! Say what?! He said they were getting more cupcakes/whoopie pies, but he didn't know how long it would take. Ok.. we needed more time. We decided on what we were going to eat, and figured we would wait on putting in our milkshake order. My friend got a couple sides, the house salad and the mexican avocado, aka guacamole. I ordered the greek burger salad, which was a lamb burger and it was so good! The salad isn't huge, but definitely a good size, and everything seemed really fresh. While we were waiting they got their delivery from Magnolia's so we put in our order for that milkshake! I would have been super disappointed if we didn't get one. I mean you wouldn't expect it to sell our by 1 in the afternoon. We had a bit of a wait for it, but it was amazing! There were 3 mini cupcakes and whoopie pit on top, which were great. The milkshake itself was just regualr vanilla, but was good.
Overall I do enjoy Black Tap. The food is all really good, definitely don't over look it for just a milkshake. The milkshakes are good, and definitely instagram worthy. Everyone who worked there was super nice, and friendly, but I don't know that I would wait an hour again for it. I might maybe if you could put down your name and go somewhere else and wait, but to legit wait in line outside till you get in is not for me.. more than once.
Let me be honest here…I pass Black Tap just about every day on my way home from work. I gasp at the long lines outside and salivate at the photos of the shakes on Instagram. So when my friend and I passed by on a Wednesday night and noticed there was NO line, I had to experience what all the hype was about. The staff is A+. They are friendly, attentive and knowledgable. I wasn't there for the food. I was there to try their artisanal shakes. I ordered the shake with the chocolate chip cookie on it and my friend ordered the Dough Coffee special of the day. Once our shakes got to the table I eagerly grabbed my phone to 'Gram. After my mini photoshoot, I dug in. I was disappointed. I was very disappointed. In fact, I was so disappointed I had to let my friend sitting across from me know how disappointed I was. It was way too sweet. The cookie sandwich was hard. I was expecting greatness and was sadly let down. I'm convinced that these shakes are strictly for the 'Gram – nothing more nothing less.
My friend enjoyed her shake and said it was delicious. I mean, I didn't see the hype in her shake either. I took about 4 sips of my shake and was completely over it. $30 later and I was ready to GO. I know for a fact I will not be going back to Black Tap for a shake…now a burger might be another story.
I have been trying to come here for over 4 weeks but the line is usually too ridiculous for my liking. Yesterday was our luck day because we were seated immediately. Thank you baby Jesus because it was hot outside. So we were seated in the back area. The atmosphere is pretty young. The lighting is pretty dim which makes it bit hard to read the tiny print on the menu but thank God for my Samsung Note 5 (shameless plug…lol).
After skimming the menu our waitress brings over a bottle of their finest tap water (yuck). For my drink I decided to go with the Spicy Sriracha Margarita and he decided to go with an Angry Orchard.
Still going over the menu I decided to get the The Californian Burger with sweet potato fries and he chose The Steak Au Poivre Burger. As we waited for our food our drinks came out. My Spicy Margarita was exactly that. I like my drinks to give me a Lil kick but got dang this gave me a kick like draymon green.
Our food came out and is was quite flavour full. The turkey burger was moist and the avocado added an ex t a creaminess to the burger. The sweet potato fries were cooked to perfection. I asked for a side of the truffle mayo and mixed it with ketchup to dip my fries in. He said his burger was delicious as well.
I decided to try another drink. Probably should have gotten a bottle of water being my next trip was to the subway. I ordered the LA Fresca. It was a bit on the sweet side….bummer.
I would definitely come again to either try another burger or one of those monstrous shakes I saw the other guests consumimg.
I went to Black Tap around 3:00pm on a Wednesday and only waited 5 minutes to get in! The burgers were decent but did not look like the ones they post on their instagrams! I was expecting cheese oozing out of a large juicy burger but it ended up looking pretty average. If you choose to venture here, make sure you order your shake as soon as possible because the wait is 25 minutes. I'll probably go back to try their other shakes!
PS: Pokestop outside!
You're damn right I went to Black Tap because of the hype. I'm not even going to mince words here.
I've wanted to go for a while, and I've wanted to go for the crazy hedonistic milkshakes so prominently displayed throughout Instagram and Snapchat. I knew the lines would be long, the food would be a little too expensive, and I'd be competing for good space to Instagram my OWN milkshake, but I sure had a fun time doing it.
On a Saturday evening, the beau and I arrived around 5:40, a two hour wait already firmly in place, as told by the bouncer. (Yes, the burger spot needs a bouncer.) However, that's the magic of being a two-top: We were inside in about 40 minutes because seats opened up at the bar. Lucky us! We got seated at the end of the bar, snuggled in, and watched the Red Sox beat the Yankees (much to the beau's chagrin) as we ordered and waited for our calorie bombs. Admittedly, we did go with hopes to order the special milkshake of the weekend, a collaboration between Black Tap and Magnolia complete with cupcakes and whoopie pies; alas, it was sold out, so we sadly settled (haha) for the Cookie Shake. This behemoth was topped with a full-sized chocolate chip ice cream cooking sandwich. The shake was so wonderfully crafted, the shake itself almost pillowy. It could have floated away! Hype aside, I really enjoyed it. Also, since we split it, I was technically only paying $7.50 for the shake, SOOO…haha…
As for the burgers, he went with the Steak At Poivre Burger, topped with blue cheese and green peppercorn sauce. The sauce comes on the side and once you pour it, your burger is drenched. I stole a bite and it was excellent. It has a true peppery kick to it. I went all out and went with the Greg Norman: Wagyu beef, house buttermilk dill dressing, blue cheese, and arugula. HOLY. COW. (Pun intended, in hindsight. Ha!) That burger melted in my mouth; once the beau stole a bite, he quickly declared it was one of the best beef patties he had ever had. Indeed, there is something to be said about wagyu beef! I felt that that I couldn't finish it! I had about two bites left, but that milkshake had already taken up too much real estate in my stomach. If this was Man vs. Food, I failed, much to my own chagrin.
I went. I saw. I (almost) conquered. There are so many hyped-up spots around NYC, many of which I'll avoid. (You'll never see me in a Cronut line!) Black Tap, in my opinion, is one place I feel is worth the time to indulge in, if only once.
