Though I'm not a vegan, I find their desserts lovely. Who says you need eggs or butter to create a delicious sweet treat?
At Blossom, they specialize in vegan desserts. From cookies to brownies to their own interpretation on Butterfingers, they make sure that anyone can enjoy something decadent regardless of dietary preferences or restrictions. And the truth is that you simply won't be able to tell these fine creations contain no animal products at all.
Two of my go to, home run picks are the peanut butter and chocolate mint cookies. The latter is sure to please even the most dubious dessert eater, so make sure if you get just one item, it's this. It's a special little critter.
I'm convinced you can close your eyes and just point to something that'll suffice. You going to have a hard time making a bad choice.
Continuing on my experimental weekend eating MOSTLY (I had turkey sausage with breakfast this morning) Vegan meals, I was curious about a bakery written up on Yelp. Blossom is a Vegan bakery near Manhattan's meat packing district (Ironic, right?). Their storefront is very small, has 2 tables and offers a couple of cakes served by the slice, a few cookies, and some bars. We were debating between the chocolate cake and the carrot cake, but since I don't care for raisins, decided on chocolate cake. I have NO idea how they baked such a rich, moist, Incredibly flavored cake without using butter, milk and eggs, but this was without a doubt the best chocolate cake I have ever tasted. Well done Blossom!
Vegan bakeries have always attracted my attention. I'm vegetarian but find it fascinating how they can make these baked goods taste so good without using milk or eggs. I had the peanut butter cookie, the oat "everything's in there" cookie and a vanilla cupcake. I can truly say this place was better than Xanax. It's so good you will want to slap your boss. The only thing that I would suggest is staying open later, especially during the weekend. I just feel people would come running (they do now….) They have an assortment of cakes and pies as well. I'm so glad it all went down on calorie free Saturday.
We were walking by, and followed our noses to the counter.
I got myself (in order of deliciousness): a Betterfinger* bar, a peanut butter cookie, a slice of apple pie, and an oatmeal cookie of some kind. Normally I would be worried about eating all of this after stuffing my face with tacos, but it's vegan, so it's healthy. Right?
Wait, is sugar vegan?

*Like a Butterfinger, but better. Get it? Also, get it. It's what I'd go back for.
Gluten Free Brownies and Cookies are delicious! They're gooey, soft, and full of vegan goodness. Will definitely come back here when I'm in the area.
We walked past this place and were enveloped in the smell of cinnamon rolls that was pouring out of the door. It wrapped us up in a big, sweet, disorienting hug (is this what it feels like to walk down Main Street USA in Disneyland?) and lingered with us long enough that we knew we had to circle back.
And I'm so glad we did. It is infrequent that I can let my dietary guard down, and to be in an entirely vegan bakery felt like being home.
The prices are a bit high – but a) NYC, b) Vegan. Those two words should sum up the "why."
The girl working the counter was friendly, helpful and knowledgable (we asked her advice on several different items and she didn't steer us wrong).
And the treats? So. So. Good.
I originally got a Gluten-Free Chocolate Mint Cookie. If you're looking for a chocolatey dessert item that will also feel like you've brushed your teeth (and I mean this in the best way possible), GET THIS. It's decadent, but… refreshing?
I also recommend the Apple Crumb Pie Slice, which was hearty and cinnamony and lovely (and totally perfect for either July 4th or all of autumn). I'm always concerned with the word "crumb" in desserts because – and I'm sure you've been there, too – sometimes the crumb topping can be either soggy or rock hard. But not this. THIS dessert should be in the dictionary next to apple crumble anything.
Finally, the Butterfinger Bar. Oh, the Butterfinger Bar. I did not expect to LOVE this the way I did… or want to fight people for the last bite. It tastes like a butterfinger, but better. It's chocolately and peanutbuttery and toffee-y and it's a good thing I don't actually live anywhere in this region, because I might gain a million pounds eating here.
Maybe I'll be schooled on the subject, but I didn't realize that this was a vegan bakery, but for me–I didn't think it would be an issue.
I picked the 7" chocolate cake with chocolate frosting for a bosses birthday. (Up from 32nd and Park; luckily the weather was fairly cool so the walk was bearable–albeit long)
I was disappointed to find that the cake itself was dry. When eaten with the frosting it was pretty good (a couple of the bites had a weird salty taste to it) but for the most part the cake itself had a dry brownie/dry sponge texture to it.
If this is normal as far as vegan baked goods go, then it would be good to know; but if not–I just don't think it was a $50 cake.
Pros:
Taste was pretty good
Cons:
Texture was off.
With the amount of good reviews, I'm assuming mine was an off day or something–and maybe I'll swing by if I'm ever in the area, but I can't say that I'd go out of my way again to confirm it.
If you're vegan and you love sweets, you'll love Blossom. If you're carnivorous and you love sweets, you'll love Blossom. Turns out dairy does not a delicious sweet treat make; turns out it's all in the flavors, kids.
Case in point: the peanut butter cookie. Also, the pie. I've got a sneaking suspicion they may be way into shortening, but a glimpse at their website told me nothing so I'll just relish in the fact that no animals were harmed (or even touched) during the making my beloved afternoon cookie.
They didn't have the double chocolate brownie during my visit, so I guess I'll have to go back and gobble one of those up (they're my favorite, you see) before I can give 'em a full 5 stars.
Love ya, Blossom.
