Blue Apron is part grocery store and part bakery, whether it's commercial candy from England or desserts from local bakers everything seems special and hand chosen to appear in their store. They have a good selection of in-house made items as well as locally sourced things as well. Of course it's not all dessert, they have a respectable cheese section, breads, coffee, and lots of other options. I only got a couple of their cupcakes which were on the smaller side. One was their lemon pistachio which didn't really taste much like either, and one was a salted chocolate caramel which had a much better flavor. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here but I loved the shop and would definitely stop in for at least a couple more things if I'm ever in the neighborhood.
I've lived in the area for over a year and have walked by many times without
venturing in. From the street it looks tiny, so I kept zipping on by. But on a lazy day when I was in less of a hurry, decided to pop in. Glad I did.
It is a tiny place, but looks are deceiving. There's a front room that is quite small (which is what you see from the street), especially with the cashier stand taking up a good deal of space. But it's more like a railroad apartment once inside, with a long (skinny) depth to it that takes you though a mini-market of exotic miscellany… coffee, breads, chocolates, spreads, an olive bar, cheeses, baked goods, sauces and finally dry goods and a butcher/meat counter.
It's kind of like a Dean & Deluca, reduced to the footprint of a 7-11. You don't go here for normal groceries but do go here for special things. Some of it is quite pricey, but that's more a reflection of unique and quality fare. This isn't a place simply stocking shelves with everyday stuff for the everyman buying stuff for everyone (they are especially void of things with short shelf lives such as produce/seafood or anything frozen).
Given their challenge space, they've seemingly sought to deliver unique fare that isn't easily found at the nearby Key foods, Food Coop or Union Market. In fact, I've not seen a lot of their offerings in any store – plus they seem to source a lot of regional/local goods.
Even though somewhat small, they are packed with unique products and are worth a peek. I'm sorry I didn't sneak one earlier, as I've been missing out on a cool place to peruse.
I went in to buy some beans to make my coffee the next morning. I am sure the beans are good quality since the place was featured on Extra Virgin, a show on Cooking Channel. It was the service that left a bitter taste in my mouth. It was horrible.
I asked the cashier, if I can just buy 1/4 lb of the Blue Apron Blend. He weighed it and it was less than 1/4 lb. He was about to take my money when the owner came along and said…I have to buy exactly 1/4 lb. I didn't mind because it only came out to be $2.32. However, I didn't appreciate the owner's tone.
I'm never coming here again.
This is a specialty foods store. They carry very high quality products, ranging from sweets to cheese and charcuterie, as well as an extensive collection of nonperishable items like oils, vinegars, sauces, dressings, etc. It's a great place to go pick up a random item or two, a place to stock up for a picnic in the park, or simply to indulge your senses and spoil yourself a bit. Small space, big prices. Bring your wallet, and try not to come when you're ravenous or you might default.
I'm a sucker for a specialty food shop! And Blue Apron has been a Park Slope staple since 2002. The owner Ted Matern has a strong food background with impressive history specifically Dean and Deluca which is also a favorite of mine. What's great about Blue Apron is that it has all those delicious food items on a more intimate environment.
My brother lives in the neighborhood and I always love going with him on his weekly visits. And my brother is nice enough to let me pick a few things to take home. If you try anything here you have to go for the salmon or cheese. In my case, I always want both. ****hand carved salmon*** is incredible here. They salmon is shaved into beautiful thin slices separated by slim slices of wax paper and then rolled into a thicker wax paper. I love having these slices on my Monday bagel with cream cheese. You can't even buy pre sliced packaged salmon here and why would you want it after tasting the good life.
Then let's talk about cheese. I love the manchego here. It's nutty and earthy. They are definite cheese mongers here. My brother likes to get his gouda here for his famous homemade omelettes. The gouda compliments the omelette and is a necessary component.
Recently, I have been addicted to the pistachio cookies at the check out area. They are smart to place all the delicious treats right as you are paying. The pistachio cookies are great because they aren't too sweet, they're chewy and have a crispy exterior. I always get at least 4! And always wish I had a dozen. I am a baker and these have my seal of approval.
Best place in the slope to pick up cured meats and cheese from Europe at reasonable prices. Ok, its not cheap, but you can without a questionable doubt taste the difference between their serrano hams and domestic stuff etc…etc… You can sit down with 40 bucks worth of cheese and cured meats, some figs and nuts and other fruit and a bottle of Yellowtail and feel about as decadent as one can possible be all the while sitting in your skivvies with the girl on a Sunday afternoon at home.
There are a lot of things that Europeans f*up and f*up bad… like tomato sauce and other food items in capri sun drink boxes. Miniscule 10 ounce cokes. Half-size fridges in the flat….BUT….knowing how to live and eat right is certainly not one of those things. They do it and do it well. And when you pickup some meats and cheeses from Blue Apron and kick back on a lazy weekend and indulge in the orgy of flavor from your purchase you sit and you can almost understand why so many of your friends moved to London and never looked back. Me? Well I need a good slice of pizza and some White House Sub shop grinders to keep me happy.
PS Yellowtail Shiraz/Shiraz reserve are rated decent by Parker and depending on whether or not you like oak (in the reserve) can suit everyones tastes.
I stopped by this morning on my way home from the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket just to take a look around. I've heard great things about this place. They have so much to offer when it comes to cured meats, cheeses, fancy chocolates, coffees, olives and baked goods.
The store was pretty empty which wasn't surprising since its Valentine's Day. If you haven't gotten what you need at this point, someone's probably already pissed at you. Better late than never doesn't cut it today.
I typically can't resist when it comes to cheese, so I decided on a pint of Bocconcino (mozzarella balls floating in water). I paid $4.30 for 6 balls that were roughly the size of golf balls. The staff was friendly and seemed happy or help out. They have a $10 minimum on credit cards so I had to pay with cash.
I was in a bit of a rush after I dropped the cheese off in my fridge so I grabbed a cheese ball, popped it in my mouth and ran out of my apartment. I immediately noticed that something didn't taste right. I figured I'd blame it on the fact that I just drank some Kombucha so maybe my mouth was tricking me. A few hours later I opened the container again and took a big whiff. The cheese had definitely gone sour.
I wanted to go back to see if I could get another container or a refund but didn't have time. I'm also flying out tomorrow so I won't be able to bring it back. I would assume that they would have no problem refunding me, but honestly, this place is known for their cheese. It makes me sad when stuff like this happens at a well known establishment.
I will probably be back. Hopefully next time I'll be able to enjoy my purchase.
A really good option in the hood for fancy foods at a charming little shop. Nothing here is a bargain but a great resource for foodies. I love the baked goods, the cold cuts and the smoked salmon, a great place to go to get a cheese plate.
