For a diner it was pretty average. Their coffee is decent and their homefries are good. Was a bit perturbed at the apparent lack of corned beef hash to go with eggs (did not see mention of it on the menu…boo) but otherwise, my eggs, bacon, toast & coffee hit the spot!!!
I settled for Blue Bay diner when I was stuck in the neighborhood needing a place for a vegan to eat with meat-eaters. I was drawn in by the sign in the entryway: "New menu options, tofu & vegetarian bacon, ask about our new vegetarian options!" (yelp.com/biz_photos/blue…) So I asked and was told that it's only on Saturday or Sunday. Why have the sign up on a Wednesday then? Later as I was paying the bill and leaving, I suggested to the owner that he add "Weekends Only" to the sign because it's misleading. He said, "Well in my book, bacon is from a pig." Wow. 2 stars.
I ordered the grilled veggie wrap. The veggies were sauteed, not grilled, but at least they were fresh not frozen. The small wrap was served on a large empty plate. For $8.50 it didn't even come with fries. Adequate. 3 stars.
My friend's chicken fingers were underdone and pink inside (yelp.com/biz_photos/blue…). He didn't turn them back since they didn't taste that good and he wasn't very hungry anyway. 1 star.
The rest of our group liked their food, all breakfast items. The restaurant was clean and comfortable. 3 stars.
Another Yelper joked that Blue Bay is where "old Riverdalians go to die". LOL! Kinda true. Everyone else eating there was elderly.
I'm a little surprised about some of the reviews here. I get that it isn't the sexiest place around, but the age of the patrons shouldn't really matter …
Blue Bay is basically my local diner. I've eaten here a ton of times, both in the restaurant & take-out. Only recently did I have anything besides breakfast here.
First, the breakfast. I love it. The omelets are bangin'. I love getting the Blue Bay Omelet (avocado, mozz, sour cream, tomatoes, onions). But it's very heavy. Very. I am always basically done for the day after one of those. But they have a great selection of omelets.
The other items I've ordered (& dining companions have ordered) have just been mediocre. Recently went with my mom, I got a chicken caesar wrap & mom got a burger. She was unimpressed with her burger, and my wrap was only okay. However, she asked for extra pickles and they brought her a whole bucket! Literally. She loved that.
Miscellaneous – the waitstaff is always extremely friendly. The … manager? owner? always welcomes you with a smile. The place has always seemed very clean to me as well.
Bottom line – it's a diner to me. I will definitely eat here again. I won't ever have extremely high expectations for the place.
