  1. Ordered from here for delivery to satisfy an Indian food craving! Was very pleasantly surprised with the lamb byryani which was super tasty!! My husband ordered some chicken dish which was too spicy to eat and the chicken itself dry. The garlic naan was quite tasty as well. Delivery took an hour and thirty minutes but to be fair they told us that upon ordering.  This place prob would have been better if we went and sat down versus delivery which takes way too long.

  2. They were nice enough to allow us to sit in for food though the were closing in 40 min. I will say that there are better indian spots but this was pretty good. I had the chicken cheetinad which was pretty good. Chicken was a bit dry but the best part was the plentiful and delicious coconut curry sauce it's served with. I also some of the eggplant dish which name escapes me. Again didn't care for the eggplant, which I don't like anyway but the ginger sauce it came with was great. The buttered naan was also great,. Delicious and hot. The wait staff were nice throughout giving us extra rice and refilling our water. The setting is like most indian cuisine spots, dimly lit bit spacious. The food came out fairly quick and was very hot. I can't speak for the delivery, but eating in here was solid. Not the best but very good.

  3. This is one of my favorite Indian restaurants in Jersey City. My boyfriend and I came here for our anniversary and it was delicious. We have been here a few times and it has always been a tasty meal! This time we ordered the vegetable appetizer platter to start. It was a great assortment of vegetable fritters. The onion rings are my absolute favorite part. For our entree we split the palak paneer, the chicken tikka and garlic naan. The palak paneer was so fresh! It wasn't too creamy as many places serve. It was filled with lots of cheese and that's my favorite. The garlic naan is fluffy and light. The chicken comes out sizzling and make sure to squeeze the fresh lemon wedges on. It adds the best flavor to the meat. The food always comes with a side of rice included. The service is outstanding. Everyone is so friendly and they don't rush you at all which is nice. I love coming to this restaurant!

  4. My weak digestive system has always held me back from straight up nose diving into all the delicious creamy spices that makes up so much of Indian food. It was with much skepticism and downright fear that I ventured to Blue Lotus after it first opened to put my body to the test again. To my surprise, no disastrous aftermath, no heartburn or worse.

The lamb, chicken, and spinach dishes are always amazing, of course being the CARBovore that I am, my favorite still being the soft fragrant naan.

Do expect the food to take a long time to come out because they had told me everything is made to order, but trust me, well worth your wait.

I've been here about 5 times now, and find that the service was better when it first opened compared to more recent months.

Bottom line – Highly recommended Indian restaurant in downtown JC, the food takes about 40 minutes to come out but well worth the wait.

  5. I wish I could give this place more stars.  Unfortunately, I would not recommend this to someone who is craving Indian food or is wanting to try Indian food for the first time… because this is not what it is supposed to taste like.

Definitely from a North Indians perspective, they missed the mark on the North Indian food.  I can't speak for the South Indian dishes (dosas etc) because we didn't try any of it.

The most basic North Indian dish, dal tadka aka black daal aka lentils, had no flavour, was WAY too thick, and was just very disappointing.  If you can't do a classic dish right, then we have problems.  The mango lassi, which also a very basic drink, was also way too thick.

The only dishes that were semi decent were the tandoori chicken and the biryani.

Especially since Jersey City is known to have good quality indian food, this definitely was not up to par.

  6. I really wanted to like this place and give it a better review but the service was so off that night that I can't.

I had wanted to go to this place for quite some time. I would have gone on my anniversary but they are closed Mondays. Anyway, we had a groupon and a friend suggested we go with them since they wanted to go, too.

My friends had been there before and knew it was byob, so they brought white wine. We had trouble getting seated even though the place was half empty because the tables hadn't been cleaned. The only open table was near a woman with two extremely young children and I didn't want to sit there. I work with kids all day and at night I just want to relax. We had to wait for one of the other tables to be cleaned.

We were seated, explained we had a groupon for two of the 4 people, and the guy took it from us right away. They gave us menus but it was a long time before someone came to take our order.

We ordered two appetizers. My husband and I ordered Tamarind Eggplant and our friends ordered something else. They received Dahi Poori, which was very sweet, and said it wasn't what they had ordered and the waiter must have misunderstood. They didn't ask for it to be changed and ate it, but they were disappointed.

We had to wait to get wine glasses, which was a bit odd. My friends kept saying that the delays with service were unusual, especially for a weeknight (it was a Thursday).

For dinner I had Chicken Mangowala and it was extremely good. I'll give them that, I liked the food very much. My husband had Lamb Vindaloo and also enjoyed it. We ordered a side of Garlic Naan to go with it. My friends ordered two different dishes – I really can't remember what they ordered at this point, but I know they also liked the food. One was vegetarian, one was not.

We had different servers throughout the night and it was confusing. Whoever happened to be near us would take a plate or whatever. When I checked my phone during a rather large break in time between anyone checking on us, I saw in my email that the groupon had been redeemed.

While waiting, my daughter sent me a text asking me to bring her home dinner. I went online and ordered Butter chicken for her from the same place since I figured I'd get it on the way out.

A woman came over to see if we wanted anything else and began to wrap things up. People who were seated after us were already leaving so it was obvious that our table was the land that time forgot. Finally the waiter brings the bill and of course the groupon isn't on there. I call him back over and he says "you didn't give me the groupon." So I tell him I gave it to the first guy. He says "oh" leaves with the bill, comes back and it's been adjusted.

We paid the rest of the bill in cash and left a generous cash tip with it. We kept waiting for the waiter to come get it but he didn't. I realized it was late and my take-out order should be done so I went up to the desk to pick it up. My friends followed and we left.

I'm home about an hour and I get a call from the restaurant telling me I didn't pay the bill. I tell the guy that we most definitely left it on the table and that we waited quite some time for someone to pick it up. I tell him it was cash, I tell him exactly how much, and he hangs up. He calls back a few minutes later, and tells me that yes, it's taken care of. Very, very awkward.

The food is good. The communication and service? Not so much.

  7. Only reviewing the lunch buffet here!

If you're going through withdrawals of the lunch buffet at Karma Kafe (temporarily closed for renovations), then this is where you need to be! On a whim, I found out that this place had a lunch buffet. I mean, who doesn't love a lunch buffet consisting of Indian food??!

Let me start off by saying that I'm no expert on Indian food, but I'm pretty sure that I know delicious food when I taste it. We came here on a Friday afternoon and it was close to empty, which we didn't mind. toward the end of our meal, more people began to arrive.

The buffet had some veg and rice options, but also had things like butter chicken, curry chicken, some sort of fish in curry, and two desserts options: carrot halwa and some sort of caramel rice pudding thing. The curry dishes were definitely spicy, as in… full of spices (vs. heat). The bf did say that the food here was tad bit hotter (spicy) here than we've had at Karma. That of course, wasn't a problem for us.

Delicious and affordable. We will definitely be back here for more noms!

  8. A really cute and small eatery that's tastefully designed, Blue Lotus highlights some of the typical Northern Indian cuisine that you'd expect, but they also have some unique regional dishes that are not as common. Husband and I along with his three cousins came here during the July 4th holiday weekend, and we loved everything about the place.

The food was impeccably prepared, with a honest and refined flavor profile unlike I've ever had. The spices were fresh and pungent and the consistency of the sauces was smooth and rich without being artery-clogging heavy. Our favorites were the lamb rogan josh, with a tangy tomato base, and the Aloo Gobi, but everything was delicious. Naan was really good, but be forewarned that it is a La carte and you will want to order 2-3 pieces to sop up all that yummy sauce.

The plating was simple yet elegant. I love the white minimal geometric bowls, and the white tablecloths. It matches the overall neutral decor with ornate wall sconces and an equally intricate entrance wall piece. There's also a small little fountain near the side of the entrance that was enchanting and soothing.

Service was prompt but not rushed. Everybody was so nice and hospitable; I just wanted to get to know them even more. 🙂 If I'm ever in the area again, I would definitely come back to enjoy the food, and would strongly suggest you to do the same.
