Blue Moon Mexican Cafe
“I grew up in California and Blue Moon is one of the only decent places I've found in Bergen County for Mexican food.”
“It is true about the noise level and children – if you hit it at a time where children will still be awake it is best to avoid the main dining area.”
“Aris and Jaclyn made our visit as always special.”

One of the best Mexican resturaunts in the Bergen County area. I do not know what is better… their food or drinks? Blue Moon has a HUGE variety of Mexican drinks and food, which I have tried many of both and LOVED all! Every time I go, I like to try something different than the last. Thus far my favorite are the Pomegranate frozen Margarita and the chicken quesadillas.
I think Blue Moon is really solid Tex-Mex. If you're going there and are expecting authentic Mexican food, you'll be disappointed, but it's definitely good Tex-Mex.
Their $5 happy hour house margaritas are really good – and STRONG for happy hour margs, which is always a positive. You do have to sit in the bar though in order to get happy hour deals, which is worth noting.
My standby was the Veghead burrito, which is a massive, veggie filled burrito with guac and/or sour cream ($2 extra if you want both). It is seriously enormous – big enough to eat at least half and take the rest home for a solid lunch the next day.
Lately I've been switching to the combo platter, and trying out the different variations of taco/burrito/chimichanga/etc, which comes with a huge portion of rice and your choice of black or refried beans (black for me, always). I believe for a choice of two off of a list (that include chicken, beef, or vegetarian options for each), it's $11.50, and $14.50 for three choices.
I definitely think that for the portion size that you get, it's well worth the money, especially for a really solid house marg (on the rocks, no salt).
I came here with a group of friends on Valentine's Day weekend for dinner, and had a nice time, mostly because of the company, though nothing really went wrong with the food or service. I remember this place being better in my memory than it has been recently. They have a bar and TV area and then some tables for dining. The place isn't very big but you usually don't have to wait.
Because of V-day, they had balloons around, which kept popping because of the lamps perhaps. It was festive. For an appetizer, we had the queso and guacamole and chips, and that was fine. One of my friends said that queso was really good, though I'm not sure how you can mess up hot cheese! I ordered the chicken avocado quesadilla and it was good. The chicken in all the dishes was a bit dry, but you had toppings like sour cream, avocado and salsa to mask that a bit. Overall, the food was fine – definitely not authentic Mexican but not terrible nonetheless. I must say that the calamari wasn't very good as calamari goes – kind of rubbery and too breaded and fried. The menu is fairly extensive with different salads, burritos, quesadillas and platters. The seafood also seemed to be overcooked and didn't have that refined taste to it. The portions were also pretty good size. For what you're getting, I do think the meals were a bit overpriced.
The service was good for our big party and attentive enough. If this place could become a little more authentic and careful with the food, I would definitely like it better.
A nice little Mexican restaurant in an area without a lot of options makes for a great lunch spot during the week. I have been twice now with one experience being better than the other, but do believe I will be back for an occasional visit in the future.
The positives:
Sit down restaurant for non-fast food Mexican
Indoor and outdoor seating, which is nice in the summer time
Chips and salsa = yum!
Lots of burrito options
The negatives:
I ordered the empanadas off of the appetizer menu, and they were tiny and dry. I was expecting something home made, but this looked like it came out of a box in the freezer section at the local A&P.
Prices with a large group can add up quickly.
Outdoor seating is great, but can be a bit miserable on super hot days. Sunshine and flies = ugh
Raising my review just because it's consistent.
I come here at least 2 x a month for their salmon avocado salad and some drinks.
The chips are good as is their salsa.
Ok, I'm pretty sure no one walks into a Chili's clone in Bergen County NJ and expects amazing authentic Mexican food. However, the food here is just plain bland, whether your favorite Mexican food is dollar tacos from the carts in East LA or whether it's Taco Bell.
Every dish I've tried tastes like absolutely nothing. On the plus size, portions are huge. I've yet to finish one of their standard sized burritos in one sitting. On the down side, a large portion of subpar food is still subpar.
The lone bright spot in a restaurant devoid of charm and taste is the dessert menu, which contains an amazing cheesecake chimichangas dish that is absolutely slamming.
