  1. We were in the MOOD for BAH-BAH-QUE!

Took a cab from Broadway & 45th to this location. After getting dropped off, the streets were jammed with BBQ trucks from around the country. We were going to miss the annual BBQ cook-off.

Nevertheless, we started with the cornbread madeleine and wow the maple syrup brown sugar butter dipping sauce was magnificent. We ordered the Brisket and Baby Back Ribs Pit Stops which is served on a metal cookie sheet and the food was delicious. Prices are moderately higher than most others but the quality and portion sizes matches the cost. Staff was friendly and attentive. Bar area is a great spot to hang out. Big Fan and I'll be back.

  2. I loved every bit of my experience at Blue Smoke. The food is great, the service is excellent, and the place itself has a great country feel. The wait staff and bartenders even wear plaid shirts.

I came for dinner on a Saturday night. Make a reservation, it fills up fast. My friend and I decided to share an appetizer and one of the pit stop plates you can create yourself. We had the Nola barbecue shrimp and they were awesome. For the entree, we got the brisket, added extra chicken (and for $5 you get a nice portion of meat), mac and cheese, and a salad. It was more than enough food for the two of us. The brisket is peppery and flavorful, the chicken is juicy, the mac is super cheesy, and the salad is a great palate cleanser (a recommendation from our awesome waiter) to break up all the fattiness and grease we were consuming. We had the chocolate layer cake for dessert and it was a huge slice.

A beer, a glass of wine, a chocolate mocha, and a cup of tea later, we basically rolled out of there in bbq-coma states.

  3. I wandered into Blue Smoke one day to grab a beer while waiting for a friend. I had initially bookmarked this restaurant to try their Southern Style bbq. Unfortunately I already had dinner plans elsewhere and only wanted a beer or two… or three. Blue smoke did not disappoint in this regard, they had a large expansive beer menu. Although the draft selection didn't impress me, their large list of bottles did. I ended up drinking a Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout and another two draft beers who's names escape me.

At about one and a half beers in, better senses (or lack thereof) prevailed and I decided a small bite wouldn't hurt. I decided to order the Cornbread Madeleines, which were made fresh with every order and took some time to come out. To my dismay, my initial order was given to the bar patrons next to me (who proceeded to eat it without a care even though they didn't order it… unbelievable…). Thankfully the trusty bartender realized this and rush ordered one for me and comp'd one of my beers. When my Madeleine order finally came, I could smell the freshly baked cornbread from down the bar. Paired with a light caramel sauce, the cornbread madeleines from Blue Smoke, was one of the best cornbreads that I've had in my life. Because the Madeleines were freshly baked, they held their own even without the caramel sauce. The cornbread was buttery and very fluffy, barely holding their shape and breaking at a slight touch. There is no argument. This is a must order appetizer when coming to Blue Smoke.

I look forward to coming back to Blue Smoke one day and ordering their BBQ. From what I peeked at the menu, the bbq does seem rather expensive and would normally keep me away, but those Madeleines definitely demand a second visit.

  4. Blue Smoke, when it opened in 2002 was at the forefront of NY BBQ. Then better and better BBQ came to town from Hill Country to John Brown and Hometown. Since 2014, Blue Smoke hired a new executive chef- Jean Paul Bourgeois and Blue Smoke is a player.
In the past I would judge BBQ solely by ribs and Mac, now it's chicken and collards.
I ate here twice in the last few weeks. First time-
    Ate:
    Pit stop $30
    Bbq chicken
    Collards
    Salad
The Pit Stop lets you choose a meat & two sides. The chicken is not slathered in sauce, it is delicious. Collards are smoky with pork and a nice salad with green goddess dressing. My second visit was less stellar- when I ordered veg kebabs w/ fish it was ok- there cheese wrapped in cabbage on the skewer wasn't listed on menu- i wasn't a fan of ingredients not on the menu but did love the chicken.

  5. I know you're probably thinking who gets BBQ in NY? Well…since this place exists, you should! I enjoyed every bit of this place. I went on a Tuesday and it was PACKED, but not out of control. Loved the atmosphere. Here are some key things I enjoyed during my visit:

    Pimento cheese appetizer- DELICIOUS!
Big Beef Ribs- super tender and flavorful, the side of pickles were such a great addition along with the mac & cheese and baked beans. Super yummy
Collard greens- I was able to snag a bite of my mom's, also very good!
Manhattan drink- very strong, but very smooth. That Buffalo Trace bourbon is wonderful, had to get a bottle for my home!
B-E-I-G-N-E-T-S……..AMAZING! I felt like I was back in NOLA. Deff get these!

I cant wait to go back and try more of their dishes, I'm sure everything else is just as good!

  6. I came here with my family for a Saturday night dinner. We had reserved a table for 8:00, but for some reason it wasn't in their system. The waiters were really nice and sat us down anyways which I greatly appreciated. The restaurant's interior is  rustic with dim lights. It also isn't overly crowded and it isn't loud inside.

For our appetizer, we ordered roasted oysters. We ordered plates for the table to share – lamb belly, pulled pork, and big beef short rib. For sides we had Mac and cheese, biscuits, baked beans; and potato wedges. The pulled pork was my favorite – it was very tender. On the other hand, the biscuits were really hard to bite into (big thumbs down).

For dessert, we had beignets which were really tasty especially when dipped into the coffee sauce. This was definently my favorite. None of the main food particularly stood out for a barbecue restaurant, but the beignets were on point.

  7. We came here for Sunday brunch with a group. We ordered the BBQ sampler (rib was fine, collard greens were good), brisket sandwich (flavorless), wings with some type of sauce (awesome! The sauce has mayo which I don't like but everyone at the table found themselves dipping everything in this magical sauce), chicken and biscuits (chicken was so tender and biscuit was very moist) and beignets (delightful hickory sauce and even the native Parisian at the table noted how authentic they tasted).

Overall, some parts of the meal were a bit of a miss. I would go back for the chicken wings and the fried chicken and biscuits. The decor is very rustic. I wish they took advantage of the plants in the windows. Kind of sad looking.

  8. I came here last week for dinner with a family friend for Restaurant Week, which of course, puts this experience into an entirely different context, as we all know.

I got here around 6-6:30 and the place was just beginning to fill up. The beer selection is pretty excellent, which is always a boon for me since I love all beer and always love trying beers I've never had before. I think I actually discovered a new favorite!

This place is clearly a Danny Meyer place, because aside from the smell and a few token decorative pieces, it doesn't scream BBQ.

We started with the pole bean salad, which was delicious and my friend said it reminded her of a southern church picnic salad. We also had the headcheese slider, which our waitress kindly clued us into what headcheese was because it totally wasn't clear to us from the wording of the menu. Very rich and savory, but definitely bad for your cholesterol. Our mains were the fried chicken and the po boy. Fried chicken was fine. The breading wasn't the most flavorful and was pretty average. Dessert, we had the beignets which were hot and delicious and the pie, for which I loved just for the popcorn topping. Very fun.

I also adored the sayings on their coasters. I started a small pile of the ones from our table and nearly shrieked when a busboy tried to take my empty drink and the coaster with it. Upon seeing what I was doing, he gifted me with a full stack of all the sayings. I added a star just for this. Such a cute gesture!

Overall, I'm not someone to nitpick about price and value, but this didn't seem worth it to me. Obviously barbecue and southern food is inherently casual and laid back, so it's tough to dress it up and make it an upscale thing, so it's kind of a losing venture here. There are so many barbecue places in the city where you can eat better for less. Go there.
