I recall eating here many years ago with my mother and we LOVED it, so when we were in the area around dinner time, it was no surprise that we found ourselves here.
The decor gets 5 stars. My parents and I are huge country fans, so the blasting country music, rural atmosphere, and all around good ole' country vibe was great. It's nice to know that when I'm craving a bit of the south, Blue Smoke is around! Our waitress was outstanding, a southern native, and so very helpful. We were greeted with complimentary barbecue chips with blue cheese and bacon dip. You could tell that the chips were made fresh and paired with the dip, this was addicting, gone in minutes! I decided to go with the Pit Stop as my main meal, so I got an entree and a side. My side, the mac and cheese, was AMAZING. Flavorful, creamy, and perfect in every way. I do and do not wish I lived closer…I do because I love this and I eat it every day…I do not because I dislike weight gain and I would eat it every day. Now…the backyard chicken. Disappointment. I remember LOVING Blue Smoke because of the great meat, but this was not great by any means. Not a lot of flavor, a bit cold. I definitely could have asked for it to be re-heated, but it would not have done anything for the flavor…just bland. My mom got the honey fried chicken and biscuits and was not thrilled with it at all. My father enjoyed his beef short ribs. I got the animal crackers for dessert and these were pretty good. I'm not sure why I remember the BBQ being so much better than I felt it actually was this time around. However, this would not stop me from coming back again. Most of what I ate was fine, I'll just try something different next time.
yummm….the beef brisket is truly amazing and the sides bring back memories of the south. try everything on the menu with a group of friends. and please – pick up the ribs – don't use knife and fork. chomp away with your teeth and enjoy the flavor. service is top notch. lots of regulars from the area frequent the joint. a must try bbq joint.
My baby backs were overcooked but the biscuits were HEAVENLY. And it is a gorgeous space filled with young professionals coming out for Happy Hour after work.
My colleague ordered the fried chicken and it looked divine. I couldn't eat my ribs but everything else, including the pickled veggies and cocktails were good.
Large bar, large booths, and very helpful staff. I'd come back. Probably wouldn't order the ribs though since they were hard and over-sauced, which is a pity.
Solid 3.5 stars –
I really wanted to visit the Blue Smoke restaurant in Battery Park after reading Danny Meyer's book Setting the Table. I've ready a lot of mixed reviews, but being that I fancy BBQ and would like to try every BBQ joint in NYC, I had to try it out for myself! The BF & I were seated immediately last night for dinner. I like the decor of the restaurant – it's got a classic Southern feel but with an elegant touch. I also enjoyed the airy space and live jazz music.
The BF ordered the brisket with collard greens and mac & cheese. Even though he liked the meat, the entire meal was served cold (even the sides)! That definitely turned him off. I ordered the fried chicken served with a buttermilk biscuit, coleslaw, and an additional side order of baked beans. The fried chicken was delicious – crispy crunchy outside with a moist and juicy inside. Although the biscuit had good flavor, it was way too doughy (should have been cooked longer).
All in all, I think we're both happy we finally tried it but no need to come back. The only BBQ joint in NYC thus far that has us coming back for more is Mighty Quinn's!
I am salivating just thinking about writing the review for Blue Smoke.
I went for a work lunch and was pleasantly surprised by how great everything was. To start, we had the Smoked Chicken Wings with Alabama White Sauce, Pimento Cheese & Crackers, and Warm Barbecue Potato Chips.
The chicken wings with Alabama sauce tasted unique and the pimento cheese & crackers was so peppery it tasted just like it would in the south. The barbecue potato chips were definitely something different to order. They were so good but they did not feel like regular potato chips- they were heavily seasoned with cajun and peppers and still maintained potato-qualities instead of chip qualities. I recommend it.
For the main course I did the Pit Stop- Pulled Pork, Salad (my conscious was getting to me) and the Brownie. The pulled pork was perfectly marinated and melted in my mouth. I was ecstatic about this because I was not trying to waste my time with dry pulled pork. The salad was standard and good. I saved the brownie for later in the day and it was super moist and sweet. Afterwards I definitely fell into a food coma.
Blue Smoke is a great find in the Battery Park City area and worth the price unlike other restaurants there. Check it out.
When we got our order of wings my friend asked, are these wings hot?
I replied no, they're sexual.
I was speaking about the wings with the white sauce which were some of the best non-hot wings I have ever had. Smoked wings man, it's a great time to be alive.
I came in here with some friends and we munched on some bar food. They had been here before and made a beeline for the aforementioned wings and the cornbread madeleines with the maple dipping sauce. Both were fan-freaking-tastic. We were originally going to only swing by but it was so good we just stuck around for a few hours. I sucked down plenty of expertly made old fashioneds and worked up an appetite so I ordered the branzino which was also awesome.
The ambiance was definitely upscale, apparently the other location is a little bit more laid back, but it worked. They had a great booze selection and the bartenders were super friendly. Would come back in a heartbeat.
Fun appetizers, great bbq and a trendy spot that's hugely popular both in the bar and seating area for business men and women. I came on Cinco de Mayo and it was packed with people in suits who came to relieve some stress after work. Not surprising, since those are the only people who can probably afford to drink and eat to their heart's content here.
It's a divey restaurant with a very knowledgable staff. Our waitress was absolutely fantastic and she led us through all the specials for cinco de mayo from the drinks to apps, entrees and dessert. If their menu caters to this one holiday, I'm intrigued by what else the chef serves up.
Queso dip with assorted chips and chicharron – delicious.
Roasted oysters – amazing.
Chicken wings with chiles – spicy and crazy addictive.
Sweet potato mash – A MUST.
Ribs – dry rub was mild, but the meat was tender
brisket – could use more flavor but melts in your mouth
Basically, we enjoyed everything that we ate and I would definitely come back. The amazing service and the friendliness of the entire staff greeting the tables were an icing to an already incredible night.
Food: I went to Blue Smoke for a few apps and drinks with a group. No complaints by anyone. We ordered the hush puppies, corn bread, wings with white BBQ sauce, chips with blue cheese dip and the cheese plate. I didn't get a chance to try the cornbread, but everyone who did, raved about it. Everything else was good or great. The hush puppies are a must. They're served with a delicious slightly spicy sauce.
Atmosphere: clean, comfortable, casual, good for dinner with friends/family
Service: on point. We sat at the bar and were attended to by a polite helpful bartender.
Misc: Not sure when I'll have the opportunity, but I'll go back if I can.
