Came here after a show. The ambiance was nice. The restaurant decor was indicative of rich hues & tones often found in steakhouses. While the decor was rich and vibrant the service was slow & slack.
After getting seated, it took the waiter 10 minutes to take our order & 40 min for our food to come. We had to ask twice for our food and was told our food would be out momentarily, yet we still waited another 20 min.
We actually all ordered the 12 oz burger. The burger was flavorful & good but way to big. The waiter explained due to the size of the burger, the cooking time was lengthy. I feel we should have been informed of this when we placed our order, not 40 min later.
The food was ok, but not worth the wait. Needless to say, we had to get our food packaged to go as we had a train to catch.
Last time I was here was for dinner with my dad, who was in the city on a business trip. He was staying at the Millennium Broadway, so naturally I figured a steakhouse would be good, and Bobby Van's was less than a block away. I had a very pleasant experience overall, but that might have been attributed to the fact that the meal was on my dad's company. Heh.
My dad, in an effort to be healthier, ordered the salmon, and I, not wanting to wave a huge hunk of steak in his face, went for the mushroom chicken. Blah, not ordering steak at a steakhouse? Crazy. However, both dishes were actually very good. Salmon was cooked perfectly on a bed of spinach, and the chicken I had was pretty hearty and well-seasoned. Came with some mashed potatoes and we also ordered the "vegetable of the day" which ended up just being steamed broccoli. The portion sizes were pretty good, and the service was very attentive despite the fact that we didn't order drinks.
I do have to marvel at the space, because there's a lower and an upper level, and it actually seems to be laid out quite nicely. The decor is pretty elegant, and not terribly gaudy.
I can't say I'll be here again, given the proximity to the heart of Times Square, and the fact that I might have to pay for it with my own money. My experience with all the Bobby Van's restaurants is very back and forth. They put out a quality product, but I just keep looking at the bill. However, the food is very well executed, and if you can expense it, you'll probably have a great time.
I was really excited to take my parents to Bobby Van's during restaurant week. We were greeted by the host and were taken to a table in the front. It was oddly quiet, and maybe that was because it was Oscar's night. Anyway, the waiter initially seemed like he didn't want us there because we were going to order from the RW menu and not the regular menu. He didn't even introduce himself. It was just weird. After we ordered, though, he was very professional and friendly.
My dad wanted to order chicken, but they didn't have regular chicken with no bacon or ham, not on the RW menu nor on the regular menu. What kind of restaurant doesn't have regular chicken? This was a huge disappointment for my dad. He got the salmon instead, and liked it.
I got the soup of the day as my appetizer, which was the clam chowder. I thought clam chowder was white? This was red and the meat didn't taste like clams at all.
My mom and I got the filet mignon, and it was very good, though my mom didn't like how buttery it was. For dessert, we got carrot cake and cheesecake (you also have the option of chocolate mousse and pecan fudge cake). It was okay. As someone whose favorite part of every meal is dessert, nothing here really stood out for me.
Overall, I don't think the meal was worth $125. I'm disappointed, and look forward to trying other steakhouses in the area instead.
Its a good steak, but this is New York, and there are many better. I went one evening with some co-workers and there was no atmosphere – their high prices put off all but the corporate lunchtime crowd which is when they're busy.
I had a 140z Filet Mignon which was decent as was the creamed spinach but the mashed potatoes were lumpy and reminded me of my own!
Do yourself a favor and go to Del Frisco's around the corner or better still Quality Meats
First let me say I didn't eat here this time I came. They had a B grade…. I really try not to eat at places that have B! I understand how the grading system works in NYC. I looked it up and they had 26pts to give them a B grade , including evidence of Mice or live mice present. GROSS!!! That was issues in June… They had an ungraded check 1125 and scored 42 pts of violations! Mice again and LIVE ROACHES PRESENT during inspection. How disgusting. They have since achieved an A,after an inspection a few days ago.
The reason I am going into detail is because the man next to the host, when I asked to cancel my reservation asked why. So I explained I prefer to eat at A graded establishments asked if I knew what they meant,I explained I did and said okay get out. Seriously? So yes to be clear I do know how it works and you wanted me to eat at your vermin infested and roach infested restaurant ?! Thanks but no. They also marked me as a no show for the reservation which wasn't correct. Definitely won't be coming back here again.
Maybe it's good for actual steak, but I got a burger here and truly wasn't impressed. I got the BV Special burger and while the beef was delicious Pat LaFrieda stuff, it was covered in their 'special sauce' which was too sweet and ruined the pure taste of the beef. I get that if I wanted a pure beef taste, I should have ordered the plain burger, but I didn't expect their 'special' to completely obliterate the taste of what was obviously a very good patty.
It's probably only good for a business lunch — the service is attentive and that's really what you want in that case. For some reason, no one ever orders anything interesting at a business lunch…
After reading the reviews I must admit I was a little worried….
The experience was good and the food was great so I do hope that the issues were resolved. We were put in a nice corner table with a view of 45th street behind us a giant mirror reflecting street life in the early evening. Nice ambiance. The pace is a little dated and the aroma from the old seats and cushions was not a that pleasant – a minus for me.
Food consisted of the tuna starter and Chilean Sea bass entrée. The tuna was fresh and of course sushi grade with a nice firm avocado mix and a green layer of 'cream' on top. Accompanied by crispy chips, it was a nice refreshing start. The Sea bass was coked perfectly and was as flaky as could be….perfect way to cook and display. The bok choi and asparagus bed was more haphazard than I would have expected – it was not a compact bed, more focused on covering the large square plate. Crisp and fresh of course but display could have been better. The soy sauce was light and also very watery creating a pool of liquid on the plate. From a taste perspective I think it worked better because it did not have the volume of salt, but there was something lacking in the dish – and although the ginger topping went some way towards bringing that element, it was too little to make the dish more complete. Hash browns were the other accompaniment but the inclusion of bell peppers (!!!yeah…..) which I cannot eat made it not so appealing.
Overall a good experience but not up to the standard I experienced at other locations. I would go back. Hope there is some improvement in some of the areas I mentioned.
Lunch meeting. No problems with the reservation. In fact, our party of two was seated at a table for 4. Plenty of room. Reception by staff, and waiter was professional, friendly, and relaxed.
I heard that the chili was excellent, but I went for the tuna, instead. Loved it. Perfectly prepared. The chili did look very good. "Side" salad was huge. I realize it is a crime to not have steak at a steak house. Next time!
