Bonchon: satisfying fried chicken cravings since…
I know it definitely satisfied mine on a Friday night, after a long week at work. I got the soy garlic and it was the perfect balance between savory and sweet. Even after transport, they were still very crunchy. I like that the wings weren't too big so the flavors were infused into the wings.
We also got the salmon avocado ball. It wasn't what I expected and I thought it was going to be warm, but what we got was still very good, very refreshing. I loved the roe in it. It added a pop to it. Wish there was more salmon in it though. Pretty pricey for a small portion too.
Found this place for late night snacks and drinks. We ordered the soy sauce wings and the lychee soju. I wanted to initially order the strawberry soju, but they were out, which was unfortunate. The wings were amazing. They were fresh and crispy and not too salty or sweet. It was definitely closely tasting to the wings I have had in Korea. The lychee soju was also perfect. It is apparently their most popular soju, and it is about $18, but it comes in a pitcher and is definitely big enough for two to share. The soju was not too strong and not overly sweet. It was definitely fitting to my tastes.
We ordered another drink after the soju, the whisky, but they accidentally brought us the lychee martinis instead. The owner was very nice about it and gave us the correct drink. I definitely enjoyed my time here, and the atmosphere was very casual and laid back. Great way to end my night.
Oh man, I love Bonchon. While it's more of a fast food type chain for fried chicken, it still is good quality with friendly service. I love the ddukbokki, tteokbuki, ddeokbuki – however it is spelled! I'm not usually a spicy person, but this dish is so good. The sauce is a combination of savory, sweet deliciousness and burn your face off. I love the rice cake and the japchae noodles that come with it.
The fried chicken is very good too. I've only ever had the garlic soy sauce, as I usually get my spicy fix with the tteokbokki. The chicken is super crunchy, with a moist interior, and the sauce is finger licking good. I usually pair this all with one of their beers, which are only 4 dollars during happy hour.
Call me stupid but I found out they were on Seamless and I'm still a sucker for KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) so we decided to order a bucket of wings before I heading out for the night.
Order the food was seamless (no pun intended) although I mistakenly tipped them nearly $10 for a $30 order. It was estimated to get to my house in an hour which was a lot but on a Saturday night, I decided not to complain.
40 minutes in, I get a random call on my phone. I answer and find out a neighbor who lives a few buildings down has my food. According to him, the delivery guy mistook one number on the address and left the food with the neighbor. WTF? Upset, I call the restaurant and explain my situation..CLICK. The phone's cut off. Figuring it was a mistake or a dropped call, I call again, the guy answers and as we're talking… At this time, he knew which order it was and I can hear him talking to a co-worker in Korean (BTW: I'm Korean so I understood everything he said). He offers me a re-delivery but like I said above, I had to go somewhere. And no, I'm not waiting another 40 minutes for my food or risk eating the cold wings from my original order either. As we're talking…. CLICK. WTF is going on here? So I call again and he doesn't apologize for the phone issue and in the middle of him talking… CLICK!
By now I'm thinking this guy is effin' with me. I'm upset. I call my neighbor back and walk out into the freezing night to pick up my food from up the block. The neighbor was so nice and I felt bad that he was even bothered.
I return to my place and the wings are warm so we start eating. As I'm eating, I call Seamless to complain. They tell me they'd call the restaurant and try to get credit out of them. Ok. I get a text 10 minutes later. "The restaurant is not answering their phone. How about we give you a $5 voucher?" FIVE DOLLARS?!?! That's it?!?! You call this customer service? You call this caring about your customers? Hell na. I call Seamless back and complain to a different agent, explain to her I'm not mad at her but the restaurant and the situation. She tells me she can hook me up with another $10 voucher and after discovering I mistakenly tipped nearly $10, she tells me she can void that as well. So a $42 bill got reduced to ~$33 + $15 in vouchers. Ok, fine. I'm not happy but I can live with that.
And my night ends there but my relationship with Bonchon Astoria will be eternal.
Sidenote: When I first discovered Bonchon Astoria opened months ago, I tried calling them to put an order in for Football Sunday and they never answered their phones then either. I am Korean myself but Koreans really need to step up their business/service game if they wanna survive in Astoria. You may be able to get away with stuff in Flushing/Bayside but not here. And I know Caffe Bene on Ditmars already closed down probably for that reason (plus their drinks suck).
As a vegetarian, any restaurant with "chicken" in its name is not my first choice. However, my brother and dad were in town, and it was their turn to pick the restaurant. My brother likes the Bonchon Chicken chain, so we went in for a late lunch.
The restaurant reminds me of Korea. Oddly enough, they have stereotypical American wall decor and multiple American football games shown on several televisions. The menu is all in English, so non-Koreans can rest easy. All the servers we encountered spoke both Korean and English.
We were the only Koreans in the joint, which is wary for a Korean restaurant. You know a Korean place is good when there are plenty of Koreans in it! The food was overpriced and all the delightful side dishes that are typically free at most Korean restaurants were $3-$5.
They had a handful of vegetarian/vegan options, and I ordered the tofu dolsot bibimbap. This is a fried rice dish that comes with rice, Korean vegetables, and red pepper paste on the side. It all comes in a stone bowl that is burning hot and your food sizzles as it arrives. I love that sound! I really enjoyed my dish.
My brother and my dad seemed to enjoy their dishes as well, but I believe their chicken strips are much smaller in size than the Bonchon locations in Virginia, which bothered my dad.
This place is so clucking good! Paid a visit during a recent trip to see some of my friends that live in Queens. They frequently dine here, and couldn't let me leave without experiencing it.
First of all, it's so cute and the employees are SO nice. The music selection during our early dinner was a bit odd for the environment, but hey – not something that would make or break the experience. Second, the food was amazing (and that's the main thing that counts, right?!). We ordered two different wing dishes: super hot (spicy) and mild. The hot wings were really, really, REALLY hot and I loved every bite. The other were simply delicious as well.
Oh, did I mention we ordered parmesan fries? Yeah – that happened, and they were equally as enjoyable as the wings.
Not much more I can say about my experience here. It was amazing, and I'll definitely want to return when I visit my friends again in the future.
BonChon chicken wings are always good and delicious. I love korean fried chicken and it is just as good as the restaurants in Manhattan
We had such high hopes when we visited Bonchon in Astoria. I ordered the chicken stripes hot. They were Sahara dry and I wound up leaving most of the order behind. Dryness aside they were also tough leaving me to believe that the chicken was precooked and then re-heated prior to serving. I'm not entirely sure this was the case but it most certainly felt as though it was, The Korean beer was pretty good and anyone who knows me well, knows that I don't typacally drink beer; I just look as though I do…
