Chipotle meets Vietnam… The sandwich wasn't bad, but there is a meat temperature issue.. To be honest, I hope that I don't get sick.
Meh. I've tried the pulled pork sandwich and the vermicelli soup bowl with pulled pork. (How do you run out of rice… I'm not sure!?) The food is good but it left me wanting more. I know a lot of people compare this to Chipotle but the serving size is very modest and since there's fewer toppings here.. it feels like even less. Overall, a good, quick bite however at $10+, there are other competitive options nearby.
First there was Chipotle, then there was Indikitch (the indian chipotle), and nowww (drumroll) there is BONMI – the vietnamese chipotle concept open right in the heart of Lincoln Center.
The Sweet:
– Great simple menu and concept.
– Sandwich – fresh toasted bread, delicious beef (18 hours cooked) and pulled pork (have yet to try other meats), cucumber, carrots, cilantro, pickled onions, and jalepenos. High quality for a banh-mi sandwich.
– variety of unique sauces to top with. Bonfire sauce and chili garlic sauce are a good compliment.
– Nice vegetarian options – Tofu and sweet potato
– They let you taste the meats before putting it on your dish to help you choose
The Sour:
– Not totally authentic, but a strong option for fast, togo, chipotle concept of vietnamese
– Sandwich could be a little bigger for its price – but overall was stuffed with meat and toppings
– Could be hard to find – a little isolated on 62nd – but that is actually a plus
– food could be warmer – seems like the meat just sits in the warmers all day – would be better if it was fresh cooked in front of you – but that may be me being picky
There aren't that many cheap fast eats in the area and its between Columbus and Amsterdam on a non-congested food street…so the lines are also short until people discover this new hidden gem.
I really like these build your own meal concepts and Bonmi is definitely a delicious option.
I do think certain items are better than others here. The sandwich option is the my favorite, and I usually get pork belly or pulled pork with bonfire sauce (spicy kind of chili sauce). The rice bowls are very filling, but I find the rice to always be too wet or mushy for my liking. There are a wide range of sauces available and they're all pretty great. The toppings are your standard banh mi toppings–cucumber, cilantro, shredded carrots, pickled onions and jalapeños. Definitely would recommend either of the pork options!
Another Belly freebie claim – can't imagine paying $11 for the portion I received. I'm a big eater for my size but am definitely not a competitive eater. Where is the other half of my bowl?
Imagine if I went with a salad… But thanks to the guidance of my inner fatty, I went with Jasmine rice, quinoa blend with half 12 hr beef and half pork belly (seasonal item – pulled lamb was not available) with garlic chili sauce. The best part of my bowl was the rice base – the consistency of rice pudding with a hint of coconut sweetness – beyond delish! The 12 hr beef – juicy and very flavorful! – def recommend! Pork belly – the cut I got was too fatty for me and half portion was one strip – skip. There weren't too many additional sides to add to the bowl – a few slices of cucumber, pickled onion, and shredded carrots – even after asking for extra, my bowl was still half empty.
Looking beyond the disappointing portion, I would say Bonmi has great potential. Staffs were extremely helpful and friendly (was allowed to sample all the sauces before deciding!). Foods actually taste great… Just not enough to convince me to pay $11 for another half empty bowl.
I should know better considering I grew up eating Vietnamese food but thought I would give it a try since I work in the area and this is a quick option. The idea is great but the quality is meh. The flavors are ok but the thickness of vermicelli is not what I'm use to. The menu is simple. That I give to them but nice try.
I have to say I was very impressed. I got the Pork Belly Sandwich. The ingredients were very fresh and extremely tasty. I was a little worried that there was no way this place could hold up compared to the famous downtown Bahn Mi option. I felt it was just as good and with the plenty of space to sit comfortably inside it makes it hard to feel the need to go downtown just for a Bahn Mi.
I had a sample of the 18 hour beef and I would definitely get it next time.
Pre-packaged yet fresh take on Vietnamese.
This area of the city doesn't boast many affordable lunch options, but Bonmi is there to add a lil' flavor kick at the right price. I like the very-filling and not at all greasy tofu salad. The sides of peanut noodles and summer rolls are less of a bargain but nice options when you're not as hungry.
I've only taken out, but staff is always friendly and fast with my order.
