A tiny yet nice place. They have fish maw soup now, which is in Cantonese style, very hearty and decent for people who can't stand hot food. Their pad keemao is also very good.
In the de facto Thai neighborhood of New York, Boon Chu is a very solid Thai restaurant. It's a very small space that seats a total of 10 or fewer patrons at a time.
I have only had lunch here, so my experience with the menu isn't very extensive, but what I did try here was very good. The minced beef over rice is very simple, yet, very well flavored, savory and slightly sweet. The additional fried egg is done awesomely, nice a crispy on the outside, and still runny on the inside; a must have for any rice dish.
The Thai sausage fried rice was done well also. It's the same as Chinese sausage, which always goes well with fried rice.
went here for dinner and this place is all right. There isn't anything really special about this place but there's also nothing bad. The food was good typical of a thai restaurant. I was looking for something less salty and saucy so I got the thai fried rice which was a-okay. The portion sizes are average, you'll definitely be full from one dish. The price is GREAT! I think the four of us each got a dish and the bill came out to 30$ including tax and tip!
This place is small though! can only fit around 16 people.
Don't be fool by this small establishment that probably can only sit no more than 15 ppl max. The food is really good here! The Pad kaprow with chicken was my entree. The spice was just right. Add a fried egg for additional $1. It was overcooked but i didnt mind it. Other dishes to get: Red Curry, Green Curry, and Fried thai chicken. The basil crispy pork was a bit too over fried for me that it was sticking to my teeth. The hay jor (fried crab and pork patty) tasted quite weird for me but my friends seem to like it. The shrimp dumplings were not bad but nothing special. Nice touch with the fried garlic. You can tell the food taste very authentic and home cooked. Prices are cheap too!
Finally made my way here upon recommendation of a friend that Boon Chu's Crispy Pork was very good. The establishment is very small. Don't expect any privacy as there are only several 2-person tables positioned closely together from each other. Most customers order takeout rather than sit down.
So I set to order the Kaprow Moo Grob ($6.00) which is thinly sliced crispy pork and chili sauce on a bed of white rice. There was an ample amount of crispy pork however I found it somewhat underwhelming. The pork was overly fried to the point that the pork was slightly dry and chewy. My guess is that it was previously cooked and then fried again to heat it up. Don't expect your tender and meaty pork with crispy skin, as it was far from that. The chili sauce gave a hint of spice, but not significant enough to do any damage to the palate. I was hopeful for this dish as it looked really good aesthetically, however execution was lacking. What really made this dish and I'm pretty sure make any dish shine was their jar of homemade hot sauce mixed with diced red and green hot peppers. This stuff was like crack! The heat builds up but not to the point of palate numbing. I wound up pouring almost half of this addictive hot sauce on my dish.
I also tried the Beef Pad See Eew ($6.50) which is your standard fare stir-fried broad noodles with Chinese broccoli and beef (you can choose a different protein such as chicken) in a sweet soy sauce concoction. The noodles were perfectly cooked, tender and slipped away from each other. And yet it was not greasy at all. Flavors were on par, sweet and a hint of saltiness. But the beef was chewy and did not do a good job of absorbing any of the flavors from the dish. I'd definitely avoid this dish if you're considering.
Our waitress and the same lady who operates the cashier was polite, however inattentive which I find is usually the norm at most Asian/Chinese restaurants. Not a problem however, since as soon as I turned around, she'd come over in a few seconds. Overall, the food was decent though I find there are much better alternatives for Thai food. However, Boon Chu's dishes are cheaper than the average along with decent portions, which may be reason enough to check this place out. But i there was one reason for me to come back, it would be their homemade hot sauce. Just be forewarned that if you eat too much of it, your stomach will thank you the next day.
I've dined here a few times and the food is great – authentic Thai food. It's a really tiny restaurant but people go there for the food, not to lounge around. The woman who greets customers and takes your order is nice. Once you sit, you get water in a wine bottle with Styrofoam cups. We ordered the pad see ew and pad thai. Both plates came piping hot with rising steam. The pad thai was really good and not too sweet. Great portion size to share among two people. The pad see ew noodles were good but the beef was just okay. It might have been an off day for the beef. Overall the food was good, very tasty. In the summer, there's a cute ice cream pop up in front that sells ice cream for $1. Can't beat that. Great place and definitely will return to try other items.
This is a small restaurant with limited seatings. Their Thai ice tea and thai ice coffee is a good size and tastes great. We had the pad see ew and beef red curry. The noodle tasted the best, with beef and some Chinese Broccoli. The curry was too spicy for me and be beef tasted overlooked. Overall I wouldn't mind dropping by and trying other dishes.
Another place in Elmhurst that just fell off 🙁 It use to seriously be my favorite hole-in-the-wall Thai spot. I was obsessed with their shrimp tom yum, their fish cakes and their green curry. For months, I hyped it up to my fiance and when we finally went, it was such a bad experience. The food doesn't taste like it use to, the amount of seasoning they put in it is off.. the fish cake had so much white pepper seasoning in it, it was overbearing. I remember back then there was a grandma that would make all the curries and food, maybe she isn't there anymore? Not sure what happened but I will not be going back to find out.
