Because it's a bit of a drive from my house this will probably never become my 'go-to' sushi place, but I did find a sushi place that I will be happy to return to when I'm in the area. I kept it very simple today-no special rolls, no large order like Chirashi, no bento box…just a lunch sushi special-a small California roll, four pieces of nigiri sushi, and a small side salad.
The sushi was delicious and the pieces were generous. The salad was pretty weak, as are most side salads at Japanese restaurants-just some iceberg lettuce, some shaved carrots and one small tomato wedge. The place was pretty full for 1:30 on a Thursday so the service was kind of slow, but the young lady taking orders was quite nice. I'm looking forward to coming back here and trying a full meal as everything looked delicious.
Went for lunch & ordered a sashimi selection and a special roll. The place was pretty quiet and service was fast. It's nice and bright, with large windows looking out onto Boonton Main St – the atmosphere could probably be improved with some Japanese music rather than jazz piano but that's just a personal preference.
Having lived a number of years in Japan (& being fortunate enough to go to university in a town renowned in Japan for sushi), I still find the concept of "special rolls" a little strange but the "snow white" was good. A couple of pieces of the sashimi were still a bit on the cold side but overall we were happy with the food. At $20 for the lot (including miso soup or a salad), it was good value for money.
Will definitely be back.
Black Dragon roll was Sam's favorite. Mine was Mt Fuji roll and Fashion Roll. The service is Sooooo disjointed though.
Not my favorite sushi place, but, great option is you're in the area, and the prices seemed VERY reasonable.
I had a beautiful dish of Spicy Fish Soup ($6) for a large bowl of soup that really could be the whole Meal. Whole clams, bay scallops, shrimp – it really was a nice dish.
Because I didn't realize how substantial the soup would be, I also ordered an avocado salad, and a roll.
The avocado salad was pretty simple. Iceberg, lettuce, tomato and ginger dressing. The careful sliced 1/2 avocado over the top. Simple. But very fresh, crispy and col. Perfect.
Last, my roll was ok. It was a spicy tuna (with chunks of avocado). I think I'd had enough avocado by the time I go to it, my fault for ordering two things with avocado. Also, it was a roll with cucumber wrapped around it, and no rice. So maybe not the best example of their sushi. It was a little hard to eat, pieces were a little too big. But hey, I'm on a super-diet and I can't break that. Hawaii 2012, Round 2, is only 4 weeks away!
