Let's talk Soul Food 101: We will begin with BLVD (Farmers Blvd). Good Soul Food's main ingredient is Soul. Cooking food with tender, love and care. The seasoning and orgasmic flavor they toss into the batter here, is unmatched.
In search of a legit fish fry/down home soul food spot, my yelp reasearch led me to Blvd. Minutes from home with ample street parking in Saint Albans A.K.A. The Home of Down Home Soul Eats, I spotted Blvd. I was greeted by a older Jamaican woman who informed me of the $12 & $15 cat fish and whiting plates. Each served with 2 sides. I opted for the fried Whiting. Our food was prepped about 15-20 minutes max. No lines. No B.S. I paid with my credit card which was an added bonus. I hate credit minimum limits.
My Godmother ordered the Potato Salad and Cole slaw as choice sides. I ordered the Collared Greens and macaroni and cheese. Every side was PERFECTION. The potato salad was just….beyond words. A little zest, sweet zing and chive for flavor. The MacNcheese was heavenly. The Cole Slaw was spot on delicious. My whiting was not greasy, nice crispy exterior and plump.
When I don't feel like cooking, I now have a new home.
Where have I been?!?!? I don't live far at all and I just got put on thanks to Yelp. The food here is really good and the prices are even better!!
So far I've only had the fish & chips with the macaroni salad ($5) and the 2pc fried chicken ($3.11). The macaroni salad could have less mayo but it's still not bad. The fish and the chicken is amazing! Fried and seasoned perfectly! They also give you enough ketchup, tartar, and hot sauce with each meal.
The first time, I went in to see the full menu but after that I called ahead and just picked it up because I didn't want to run into crowdedness like the other reviews mentioned.
Staff is cool. I've only seen a few older ladies that just seem like they've been dealing with wacko customers way too long. The ladies are nice, but just not overexcited.
Had to stop here again, even though it's not a cheat day. After a long ride from Brooklyn, I stopped here to satisfy my hunger. So yeah there was no line and this time I ended up getting the quarter jerk chicken dinner with their gooey cheesy Mac and cheese and warm delicious greens. This jerk chicken was hot as hell especially with the sauce and the whole meal was fresh. I can't even find any more words to say about this, the food filled me up as usual.
3.5 stars.
I had the fried catfish today with mac n cheese and collard greens, a $12 meal. Whereas it is more appealing than most of the other food options in the area, I was a little disappointed with my meal. The breading on the catfish was a little tough, making it hard to pull off bits with the fork they provided me (no knife was supplied). The tartar sauce was very fresh though and the mac n cheese was solid. The greens were just greens. It definitely didn't feel like a $12 meal.
FYI, if you use a credit card you must show ID.
