I've gone here a few times and I have mixed feelings towards the place. One several visits, everything was great, food, service, atmosphere, etc.
On my most recent visit, we told initially told a 25 minute wait, okay no problem. Well, 25 minutes turned into an hour and a half…. We ended up staying and we were offered a free appetizer for the inconvenience which was nice.
On most visits, the bbq is very good, but you might want to avoid a weekend because the place is kind of tiny and they aren't great at guessing the amount of time for a table.
Friendly service with good BBQ.
Bought a Groupon for two entrees and an appetizer. The food was very good, but it took FOREVER to come out. I had begun wondering if they started smoking the food when I placed my order. Tried the Bourbon Sampler, which came with bourbon ribs, brisket, pulled pork, fries, coleslaw, and garlic bread. Everything was moist and tender. Nothing was dry or hard. The sauces were pretty good too. I like the delta sauce by itself, but the Kansas City tastes better on everything else. XXX sauce was smoky with a little bit of kick.
Probably the best BBQ I've had in the area. BYOB.
Finding good BBQ in New Jersey is like finding a prime parking spot on a Saturday at the mall. But, my friend George can sniff out promising BBQ joints just about anywhere so on one of his recent visits, so we pounced.
Inside, the restaurant has a good vibe. BB King on the hi-fi. Rustic decor, but clean and inviting. We got the word from our server – the brisket sandwiches rock. Naturally, we ordered two and fries. I added cole slaw – my personal passion.
The meat was juicy. The bread fresh and a good match to the mound of beef before us. Fries were equally well cooked – hot and fresh. The cole slaw too was good and something I would order again.
Price was about $20 each and in line with the quality and generous portion size.
If this restaurant was in Texas, I might do 4 stars. But this is NJ… Hard work and effort this good should be recognized so I give a fifth star as a reward for their dedication to this rare in NJ art form. Well done guys.
Definitely a come back to place.

Service was friendly, attentive and just great. The house made fried potato chips were fantastic, especually if you use you Yelp check in, it is free!
we ordered the garbage plate which had all of their BBQ meats. It is enough for 2 to share but we were a bit disappointed with the brisket and pulled pork as they were dry even if we added BBQ sauce. I would suggeat to go with the best part, the ribs. They were seasoned and juicy, comes off the bone clean.
We will be coming back and will try their baby back ribs next. The collard greens, grill corn on the cob and haystack onion were good sides or appetizers.
If you like BBQ ribs, this is a good place to stop by if you have that craving especially in northern Jersey.
I really wanted to be able to write a good review for this place. I am a firm believer in supporting the local business, and this place definitely seems like it needs support from the community as it is very small. So I feel sad that I can't write a better review. But alas…
I purchased a Living Social deal months ago for here, and realized it was about to expire. So we made a Tuesday night trip to Bourbon BBQ. I called early in the day to make sure I didn't need a reservation (who knows!) and they assured me it wouldn't be busy. That part was true. However, when we got there we were informed by our waiter that they had run out of brisket and baby back ribs. These are two staple items on a BBQ menu. For them to not have either, it was a HUGE disappointment. I could see my boyfriend's face fall despondent. So, we looked for other options. There was a specials menu inside of my menu so we were perusing that. A few moments later our waiter came back and saw us looking at the specials and informed us that those weren't meant to be inside the menu, they're only offered on the weekend. This was another blow. Still, we tried to make the best of it. We talked with the waiter about our options since 2 huge menu items were unavailable, and he agreed to substitute the brisket in the "Garbage Plate" menu item with some of their signature fried chicken. This was a very placating compromise. We also ordered an order of the empanadas as a starter.
So, we waited for our food to come. And when I say we waited, I mean we waited a while. In their freezing cold restaurant. It was frigid. Our hands and feet were freezing, and the staff were all wearing their winter coats inside the restaurant. This is a huge no no. I mention the staff wearing coats because anyone can complain that a restaurant is too cold for their liking. This place was too cold for *anyone's* liking. So we sat, freezing and hungry. Our waiter realized that the food was taking a very long time, so he offered us a small basket of corn bread to hold us over. We picked at that and waited some more. Finally he brought the empanadas.
Here is what makes me even more sad-the empanadas were great! All the food was very very tasty. Once we had the empanadas, we felt maybe the restaurant had redeemed itself by how great the food was. The waiter brought over an array of sauces for us and we tried all of them with the empanadas. We loved them all and the empanadas were huge and stuffed to the max with meat. There were only 2, one for each of us, so once we finished we waited again. And waited. And waited. Our food took another 15 or so minutes to come out. Finally it did. Again, I am sad to say this food was delicious. We had ribs that fell off the bone-they were tender and filled with flavor. The sausages (I believe kielbasa actually) were tasty and really yummy dipped in the XXX BBQ sauce. The pulled pork was nothing to write home about, but enjoyable nonetheless. The baked beans were super flavorful, and we had sweet potato fries that were crispy in just the right way. Last but not least, the fried chicken. It was AMAZING! I really have never had such satisfying fried chicken. So even though we were freezing, we enjoyed every last bit of that meal.
Then came time for the check. I handed over my phone to our waiter to apply the Living Social deal, and again we waited. At this point, our waiter was the *only* waiter in the restaurant (this was around 7:30 PM, so not like it was closing time or anything). So he was not only trying to get our check printed, but dealing with multiple take out customers as well. After about 10 minutes, he came back with my phone and no check-asking me to open my phone again as he'd been busy assisting other customers. Finally, the check comes and we realize we'd been charged for 3 beverages totaling over $8 that we had not ordered (we'd both only had waters). Our waiter was quick to remove them, but it was still just one more negative thing to apply to the Bourbon BBQ visit. Overall, there were way more "cons" than "pros" in this experience. I wanted nothing more than to find another local BBQ joint that we could love, but we will not be visiting this establishment again. Unless we have a hankering for some fried chicken, then maybe we'll order takeout.
This review is based on my delivery experience and hope it can be used to improve the service. @BourbonBBQ
It was Sunday and let's face it, I was hungover, hungry, and trying to get my food delivered to me fast. I took to grubHub to avoid having to talk on the phone and aggravate an oncoming headache. I remembered my sister had ordered from here before and it looked pretty good so I decided I would give it a try. I ordered 2 blackened fish wraps, a chili cheeseburger, cheese fries, and chocolate mousse.
Shortly afterward, I received a phone call that they no longer have chocolate mousse on the menu.
It took maybe 40 minutes for my food to arrive, which was expected. I wanted to catch up on some DVR while eating with my bf and sister, but had to relocate to the kitchen because the food wasn't in any containers and was leaking through the bag everywhere
First, the cheese fries were in a small Chinese food container, but because they didn't actually fit, the lid wasn't closed. They were open in the bag like McDonald's, except these had cheese on them… a container isn't very useful if it doesn't actually serve its purpose…containing the food….
Then, the blackened fish wraps with coleslaw, which I had assumed was on the side, but was actually inside the wrap, were wrapped in paper. If you imagine a typical container of coleslaw, there is all that liquid, right?…well the wrap was so soggy, and the juice had leaked evvverrryyywhhherreeee so that sticking my hand into the bag to get the food was like sticking it into those gross Halloween tricks full of fake worms and eyeballs. I was surprised they actually put the spicy sauce in containers and didn't just dump it inside the bag. It wouldn't have made a difference mess wise. It really makes me question their catering capabilities.
In the end, everything was cold so we had to heat it all up in the microwave. The Chili Cheese burger didn't look like it had much cheese on it. The fish wraps have the potential to be good if they weren't so soggy and cold. I had put a $4 tip for the driver on grubHub, but now wonder if the girl ever got it because they had to adjust the check to remove the mousse. That really bothers me. I also got an email notification that Bourbon BBQ refunded half my money due to my bf calling to complain.
Maybe eating at the restaurant is the best way to go. I hope they invest in some containers for delivery though.
Since my trip to Austin (TX), I have been craving brisket like a crazy lady. So my friends and I opted to come here one Friday night.
The staff were super friendly. They were really attentive and on top of their game. They even let us switch the channels on one of the televisions.
For dinner, I tried the jalapeno empanadas, which were okay. I wish they were stuffed more because there was a huge empty pocket of air.
Though, my main course (the garbage pile for 2) was amazing! The staff even let us switch out the pulled pork for fried chicken and the coleslaw for mac & cheese.
It was really great. The corn bread was great. The sausage on the pile was great. The fried chicken was FRIED fresh and really great. It was still quite juicy. Sadly, the fried skin came right off at first.
I loved how there were so many different types of sauces. The collard greens were great. The mac & cheese hit the spot but not the best I've had. I was just glad to have it.
The ribs were pretty on point.
Sadly, the brisket, which is the one thing I'm craving (I like the fatty kind) – we got a lean cut. They were super lean so it almost tasted a little dry. I love the fatty version of brisket. I so wish they had that.
Other than that though, everything was amazing.
Good food, nothing special, but decent for the area. The food took forever to come out though, it was like they started smoking the food when we got there. The portions were big and the catfish sandwich was very good. The sauces they had were pretty good too. I was disappointed in the mac and cheese though, not cheesy at all, tasted more like butter than cheese. I would go back to try some other dishes, but I am more of a fan of Dinosaur BBQ.
