Great bakery that did a wonderful job with our wedding cake. They offered a great variety of cakes and fillings, and ours was absolutely delicious (one layer was vanilla cake with raspberry jam and mousse filling and another was chocolate with cannoli cream filling- all covered in buttercream icing). The cake was absolutely delicious, and it was beautiful as well.
I will have to stop into the bakery to try other treats and update the review.
The best place to drive or walk past for the aroma in NJ!
After decades as a typical–but very good– local bakery, set up outdoor tables, upgraded the decor and expanded their clientele.
Expensive–otherwise 5 stars. Excellent biscotti; Blows away the new $5 cupcake places on the same street.
All the baked goods look amazing! They also have a nice sitting inside and outside.
I got their fruit tart and chocolate hazelnut and pecan meringues. Hazelnut chocolate meringue was amazing! Fruit tart was also great.
I'm definitely going back to try some of their other treats – cookies, eclairs and maybe even order one of their beautiful cakes.
They also have coffee to enjoy with baked goods.
Things I had:
Tiramisu
Rainbow cookies
Carrot cake
Biscotti
Things I recommend:
Rainbow cookies
Not getting super hyped and driving out at 10PM to get their tiramisu
It's not that the pastries were bad/inedible; it was more disappointing and "alright." I did enjoy the rainbow cookies which were much different from the usual that I have. Very dense and layered with seeded jam. Fantastic with coffee but a tad pricy.
Unfortunately, that was the end of my favorites. The tiramisu layers were similar to angel food cake with coffee flavored butter cream. Tiramisu is a hassle for me to make so I always buy it. Usually bakeries, even the bad ones, don't fall flat on tiramisu but Bovella's did. (I was told their tiramisu cupcakes were good though) The carrot cake lacked the usual nuts, raisins and .. carrots. It was essentially a brown sugar spice cake with cream cheese frosting. Again, not bad but not worth buying. The biscotti were super hard. I'm a sucker for biscotti but I almost broke teeth biting into these. It pains me since the service is great and the bakery is beautiful but I don't think I'll go out of my way for anything other than the rainbow cookies any time soon.
I tried to think of a reason to give only four stars and just couldn't. Everything here is fabulous. The rainbow cookies are flavorful and moist. The chocolate hazelnut meringue cookies are probably the best I've ever had (and I've had more than my fair share). Despite there being a huge stash of cookies and pastries at all times, everything I've purchased was fresh and delicious.
Add onto that the fact that they make a phenomenal cappuccino, and have a few tables where your inner Italian can hang out reading the paper while watching the ever-constant crowd of sugar seekers go by. It's like walking into bakery heaven and having a place to sit and enjoy it.
Prices for cookies seem pretty reasonable, but I haven't really delved into the cookies or other items. The flock of people working behind the counter keep service moving quickly. It may not seem warm and fuzzy at first when you hear the "can I help who's next?!" screech, but that's just so they're heard over the din of parents asking their kids (and each other) which cookie they want. Everyone is friendly once they start helping you.
Moral of the story… every time I'm in Westfield I stop by this store (provided it's open). Even when I'm "trying to be healthy" a Bovella's cookie makes its way into my possession – and my stomach. You should follow suit.
Bovella's has been my family's favorite Italian bakery for decades! My grandmother ordered EVERY cake for EVERY family occasion from here going back as far as anyone in my family can remember. Just last week, while sampling a cannoli from another bakery my father and I looked at each other and came to the same conclusion… "perhaps other Italian bakeries are doing pretty good sfogliatelle, lobster tails and biscotti however, there is only one Bovella's and they are still the best when it comes to Italian pastries!"
My advice, stick to the original Italian classics and stay away from anything with peanut butter and Oreo cookies. Not that these things are are bad, but ask yourself, with so much limited space in your tummy for sweets, why waste your calories on silly nonsense when you can enjoy the best cannoli outside of Italy right here in Westfield!?
Another great yelp find!! Italian bakery but with a cozy eat-in area. Everything looked amazing, coffee was good, the place was clean, staff was friendly, the perfect way to end a Saturday night date night. Open late and ample parking in the back. We grabbed a table by the window and we were able to people watch.
Bovella's is probably my favorite bakery in New Jersey. I always order cakes here for special occasions and they never disappoint. They're absolutely delicious! I also love their pignoli cookies. The best!
