It's been a long time since I last had Breadbox. It was a long overdue visit. After taking my daughter for a walk, we grab lunch along with my siblings. The outdoor interior and lounge is gorgeous! As my BFF is getting married next year, I was browsing for venues. This might be the place. Or I initially thought, it was the venue to host her bridal shower. We were seated indoor right away. We were given water and given awhile to go through the menu. There were only 2 staff available. Only a handful of customers was dining there. I glance back at the counter twice, hoping to signal one of the wait staff over. Instead, they were too busy with chit-chat. I gave them a few minutes. And again, I turned over to see if they were coming over. They glance in my direction but causally turn back to their conversation.
After we placed our orders, it didn't take long for the food to come out. My daughter had the breaded chicken with chips. It did not look appetizing at all! Even for a grown up. The chicken served was heavily breaded with dripped oil and cut into thin strips. Even the chips were greasy. I thought it was me but it had a few strands of hair. My daughter left her plate untouched. I had the Mediterranean chicken with salad that was pretty good. Hub had Turkey cutlet with salad. My brother had the BBQ pulled sandwich with fries for an extra $2.50 while my sister opt for a salad. While the rest of us had a good lunch. The price on the other hand did not justify the service and quality of food. It remind me more of an overpriced Panera. My sister complained her salad was drenched in a lot of dressing. Also, the fries were soggy. Aside from the slow service to a poorly prepped kid's meal, everything else was just ok. Even the bathrooms could use a cleaning. The floors had stains and toilet paper everywhere. Our bill came out to mainly around $15 pp except for kid's meal. It was over $70, not incl. tax and tip. While it may have been good for take out, the food and service needs work. I was a bit disappointed and not impressed (except for the outdoor lounge). I don't plan on returning!
What a find. This place is kind of off the beaten path in LIC but worth wandering for. We sat on the patio for lunch on a sunny day and brought our dog. Dog friendly x 1000. They brought the little guy his own water bowl! The coffee drinks were outstanding and they booze was great as well. The food was incredible. Among the best Mediterranean we've had in LIC. Add-on very amicable service and it creates the perfect lunch vibe with really fresh, healthy food.
I love brunch food, but while on vacation, I got brunched out. Still wanted eggs…just not the same old eggs. Breadbox to the rescue! We actually had an early start one Saturday and none of the other brunch places were opened yet. Breadbox opened at 9. Yes!
We showed up, and we were the first guests in the place. The girl said we can sit wherever we wanted. Done. I ordered the Mediterranean Eggs ($13), which were 3 (!) poached eggs with prosciutto, goat cheese, spinach and some tomato based sauce. This was such a new dish to me, and it has me hooked. Absolutely delicious. It came with toasted pita, which was wonderful to sop up the yummy sauce.
Service was OK. We were alone in the restaurant for the most part. The girl got us water and served us pretty fast, but left us alone after that. My husband had to flag her down for service. /shrug. She also forgot one of my husband's orders, but luckily he wasn't hungry after eating his main entree and he just left it alone.
I definitely want to come back to try the other dishes. Overall, a tasty brunch option in LIC.
My husband and I walk past this place all the time and we finally went it! As the weather was nice we sat outside. Unfortunately we got sat next to 2 couples with small children that were a bit too close and it was noisy and a bit distracting (we could hear everything they were saying!).
The food came out quickly. It was pretty standard, nothing to write home about. I had pancakes and my husband had oatmeal. I saw someone have French toast that looked pretty good.
The location is a bit strange if you are sitting outside, as you are on a main road and my view was of the petrol garage. There were also a lot of dirty tables that weren't cleared. I really wanted to like this place, but a combination of too many factors rendered it average for me. Maybe eating inside is a totally different experience.
Breadbox Cafe is a great, casual brunch spot in LIC. I got the Mediterranean chicken sandwich which was delicious, a huge portion, and very inexpensive. We also shared the buttermilk pancakes with strawberries which were great. I recommend checking out this local spot if you're ever in the neighborhood. It's very spacious so it'd be a good choice for a large group of people.
It was nice out, and all we wanted was to sit outside and eat some food. For some reason, LIC has some sort of prohibition against backyards/happiness, but Breadbox's deck is kosher.
On the waitress's recommendation, I went with the Shaksouka, which sounded like a good call at this cafe with a Mediterranean twist. And it was solid. The couscous was forgettable, but the rest of the poached egg and tomato sauced meal was on point. Along with the pita, it's a pretty sizable meal as well.
If you also need some brunch in the sunshine, you could do a lot worse.
I've been meaning to check out Breadbox Cafe for a while and I'm so happy I did! I tried it for brunch last week-end and shared with my boyfriend the shashuka and the pancakes. We were seated promptly and the service was friendly. Tables/utensils could have been a bit cleaner but…
Food-wise, delicious! The shashuka was flavorful although a bit watery (I like a rich, thick sauce) and the pita bread served warm. The pancakes were served with fruit, syrup and cream and quite a treat. Very reasonable prices and nice atmosphere (albeit a weird location next to a gas station).
I ordered the vegan falafel platter with a side of fries and I specified "CRISPY" several times. It irks my nerves for me to then receive NONE crispy fries, and the waiter watching me as if I'm speaking a foreign language when I say that my fries aren't crispy, and I vehemently asked for them that way. To add insult, when they were sent back, the portion size was smaller. No I wasn't refunded any amount of my money back. You mess up, and then to correct your error you decrease on what I paid for?
The fries were ok, but the falafel platter was good. Note to you people, DO NOT cheat customers out of what they pay for! My SOFT fries came to me in a rectangular foil tray and was packed with fries. When they were returned to me after being done in the manner I asked, half the amount was placed into a small styrofoam square container! Only reason I didn't make a scene was because I had my kid with me! There won't be a next time!
