I've stopped by here once or twice to get something to eat so I could continue on the LIC brewery trail that's opened up in western Queens. I usually just get a bagel and spread, and depending on how much I've had to drink/not had to eat beforehand sometimes two. The bagels here are fine but the spread is okay, they have a lot of different varieties but nothing that really stands out except for the jalapeno one. I usually just grab things to go so service is fine, a decent spot.
Had to edit to 5 stars. Really solid bagel joint. This place gets packed on Sunday mornings and they always get your order efficiently fast and correct. The food is everything I want from a bagel place. As a self-proclaimed bagel connoisseur I was thoroughly satisfied and impressed by this place. The egg sandwich I get on a sesame bagel is flat-out legitimate. This place has firmly established itself as my local go-to bagel place.
Hidden breakfast gem? Nah. Cheap prices? Somewhat. Meh-city? Absolutely.
The egg sandwich. It's the breakfast of champions, the perfect on-the-go breakfast, curing hangovers and helping us brace for the day ahead. And while the egg sandwich is far from refined, I appreciate the places that put in the necessary TLC to do justice to this NYC staple. Unfortunately, Bricktown Bagel & Cafe is NOT one of those places. It's really such a shame…the eggs are usually burnt and have an unpleasant after taste, while the roll is often hard or stale. And as much as I hate to say it, I almost wish there was a *gasp* McDonalds nearby to get a better breakfast sandwich.
It's not just the egg sandwiches, none of the food here as ever "wow"-ed me or even "hmm this is okay"-ed me. The homemade bagels and cream cheese are FAR below even your average NYC bagel shop standards, the pancakes are often dry and are more chewy than fluffy, and the omelets taste just a step above those at a Denny's or IHOP.
And this will sound crazy given what I've said in this review thus far, but I've actually ordered food from here on several occasions. It's like I have some weird form of Stockholm Syndrome with this place. Objectively, it's pretty terrible, but in my mind I've almost convinced myself "it's not THAT bad" and I keep coming back. I suppose because I live in Hunters Point, I'm a victim of proximity and limited options. Still… My palette and stomach deserve better.
Bleh! I came here because I had something to do in the area. I walked in and made an order, all I wanted was a whole wheat bagel with scallion cream cheese and a small coffee. There was no order to where you are supposed to go after. I see a bunch of people crowding around the cash register and then heard a girl yelled "who needs to pay next?" So I stepped up and paid for my food. One star because they have almond milk and their coffee doesn't taste half bad. After I paid, I stood around some more for maybe another 15 minutes. Seriously, how long does it take for you to spread cream cheese on a bagel? After maybe another 5 minutes, they finally called my order out. I went and got it and sat down at one of the tables to eat. After I took my first bite, I almost want to be like "I waited 20 minutes for THIS?" First the bagel wasn't even toasted and I guess I didn't tell them or was asked. The bagel tasted chewy and doughy, like it wasn't cooked all the way. Second the scallion cream cheese tasted like cream cheese with no flavor but you can see pieces of scallion in it. However, even then the scallion was almost flavorless. I was so underwhelmed by this place and the fact that it took so long for a simple bagel just made this place two stars.
Also the fact that there was ample parking out front does make it nice.
My girlfriend and I are big on rating bagel joints and what they've got to offer. We decided to stop in here for breakfast on a Sunday morning, so seeing a whole bunch of people in there was to be expected. There was a solid amount of seating with a TV playing in the background. No one was in line to order but there were a bunch of people waiting on food. We decided to get a few of our go to spreads when sampling a new bagel place: the sun dried tomato cream cheese, white fish salad, chicken salad, and scallion cream cheese. I fell in love with both the fish and chicken salads. Perfect consistency and taste for what I like (shredded chicken and well seasoned, smooth white fish that's not chunky at all and not too oily). My girlfriend felt that the sun dried tomato cream cheese was too white, meaning too much cheese, not enough of the sun dried tomato mixture. I also felt hat the scallion cream cheese could have used more scallions. The bagels were well seeded and pretty soft even after being toasted, which I didn't mind too much. The service was ok…people were friendly but seemed very rushed and frantic. We still had a great breakfast and would def go back again to try out other spreads and the iced coffee.
I love their French toast bagels! I get it with they cinnamon cream cheese. The crunchiness from the melted then solidified sugar on the outside just brightens my day up.
The girls at the counter definitely know how to take care of you!
And it is on the way to the water so you get your awesome breakfast with this amazing view
Bricktown serves up a respectable bagel that satisfies most of bagel cravings. They offer a decent array of bagels (from french toast to whole wheat everything), and your typical schmears and fixings. The bagels are nicely sized, doughy, but still with a decent crust. They also have some lunch-type deli sandwiches if you're not feeling like eggs or cream cheese. It's not going to be on any top 10 lists with Ess a Bagel or Black Seed, etc., but it does the trick.
My neighborhood bagel shop is pretty awesome. Excellent selection of bagels, spreads, sandwiches, drinks, etc. good customer service and seems very clean. Loses one star because it's not 24 hours :). Will be making good use of this place now that I am next door.
