I either went on a very off night or I would actually say this was the worst chicken I have ever eaten. If you like dry and salty…. this is your place.
Venue (3/5) Casual, shared high top tables…. laid back rotisserie feel. Did not match the high prices of the food, but would be a casual neighborhood place to catch up with friends. I would not recommend this as a date place.
Food (1/5)
Half Chicken (1/5) Dry, Salty, burned …. all in one
Mac & Cheese (2/5) at 13 dollars this dish was not up to the hype and overpriced
Pork Belly (1/5) Dry and cold
Brussel Sprouts (2/5) If you like salt this is your dish
Water (5/5) My favorite at this restaurant, I found myself needing more
Service (4/5) our waiter was nice and attentive
Came here on a quiet Sunday night and had a really enjoyable experience.
First off, while I did not indulge, they had a good happy hour deal going. I believe it was half off bottles of selected wine and $5 beers. For the area a really solid deal. Don't know if it's Sunday-only, or when it's offered. Beer and drink selection looked good as well.
For the food – I started off with the cesar salad. To be honest, I saw a picture of this salad on yelp and it was one of the main factors in me coming here. The salad was good, but doesn't taste quite as good as it looks. The cotija cheese in lieu of parmesan was unique, but not sure if it was an improvement from tradition. Nevertheless, the romaine was crisp and fresh, and the dressing was tasty. Wasn't overly salty which is always a plus (for me, at least) as well. One note – the picture I saw seemed to have a soft boiled egg in the salad, but didn't come in the one I ordered.
For the main course I had the pork belly. It was amazing. Pork belly can be dry and a little tough, but this was cooked perfectly. Doesn't exactly qualify as a health food, but the fat was rendered flawlessly and the meat was moist and delicious. The chimichurri was a great touch, and made for a great couple of tacos with the fajitas, which are available upon request. Also a side note – they have both flour and corn tortillas. For some reason, I really don't like corn tortillas so this is a huge plus for me.
My girlfriend had the chicken and it was very good. Might go for that next time I find myself there. The half chicken was more than enough for one person, so I bet splitting a whole chicken would be easily enough for 2 people. Maybe 3 if you get enough apps / sides.
I guess the only negative (and not really a negative) is the menu is really small. There were only 3 entree options (beef, pork or chicken). I think they could use either a fish or vegetarian option.
Overall had a really nice meal here and will be back for sure.
I'm the girl who can eat a whole chicken alone. Baked? Fried? Rotisserie? All are welcomed in this belly.
My husband and I invited my bestie and her bf for a "welcome to long weekend" double date. Since the place didn't take reservation, I got there a bit early to grab us a table. The place was surprisingly empty for a Friday night. Not sure if it was because of the cold or neighbourhood?
The 4 of us shared a whole rotisserie chicken, fried oysters with jalapeño purée, Mac and Chilaca , Brussels sprouts, and cookies with horchata. It was just the right amount of foods for the 4 of us!
Whole chicken – the meat was moist, tender, and juicy. The skin was flavourful and crispy. Served with chimichurri sauce and warm tortillas. Bird this large, this well made? Def worth the price tag.
Fried oysters – 5-6 pieces? Tasty starter but a bit overpriced. The jalapeños purée gave it a nice kick.
Mac and Chilaca – very cheesy! Didn't taste much of the Chilaca pepper? It was a good but not memorable side.
Brussels sprouts – any Brussels sprouts dish is always awesome! fried version? Give me two please!
Cookies and horchata – warm and soft with melted chocolate chips oozing from each! The cookies lacked the crisp but offered plenty of soft/gooey-ness. The horchata was perfect for dipping and washing down the sweets!
Overall – great food but nothing outstanding! I see this place more fitting for the Brooklyn hipster crowd. Def recommend giving it a try especially if you love chicken like me!
3.5 stars.
As previously described, this place has only tall stools to sit, but does have a decent amount. Yet, if you're planning on coming with friends – this is a good spot for groups – you should show up early, as they don't take reservations.
The $30 whole chicken special during happy hour (5-7p) is a steal. It comes with 2 large sides and a giant cookie with orchata… enough food for 2 even if you don't order anything else. During this time, beers and a couple of wines are just $6.
Although the chicken was pretty good, it wasn't groundbreaking. On the other hand, both sides (collard greens and rice & beans) were well executed, and the cookie did a fine job ending the dinner. I'm not sure I'd go back if it weren't for the special, but what they offer before 7p is hard to beat.
If you're looking for a simple – but satisfying – dinner in this neighborhood, this could be a decent spot.
The service is outstanding.
This place was a FIND! We were starving, hot, and thirsty and we stumbled into the broken spoke for a small bite. We ended up getting the chicken combo meal for two which is an entire chicken with two sides and a giant cookie. We got the pickled vegetables and the rice and beans. This was pretty tasty, incredible, and healthy. They're us a punch of acid in the rice and beans that might be unexpected but we loved it. Flavored on the chicken are perfect. I will be back!!
Broken Spoke is such a gem in Kips Bay- and sure to be the next big happy hour hub! It's a cozy, casual and chic restaurant with beautiful brick walls, tall tables and communal seating. The servers are attentive and extremely friendly- ours must have come to our table 5 times just to check on our meal. We came a Saturday night at 6PM and were seated automatically. Come for the early bird special for a full chicken meal accompanied with 2 sides, tortillas AND dessert: cookies with horchata. The rub on the chicken was just packed with tang and flavor- some pieces were a little more dry, but most were very moist (And um for the price and all the food- no complaints!) For our sides we chose the Brussels sprouts with walnut purée and rice and beans. Both were excellent although the Brussels were a tad too oily for me (the BF really liked it, however.) The Broken Spoke is definitely worth the visit if you live around the area, and worth the commute if you don't!
Cute neighborhood spot! Similar to Pio Pio, in my opinion, but a bit more "hipster". They have a good variety of food to offer, which is all written on the big menu at the front of the restaurant.
I've had the rotisserie chicken, which is cooked very well. The Brussel sprouts which are flavorful and delicious. The Mac and cheese, which is creamy and hearty. And the French fries (can never go wrong with that!)
I came to this place because of the great reviews. I got disappointed again but a restaurant in Murray Hill. Apparently places in this neighborhood got great reviews wherever they have a lot of alcohol. This is one of those place which got Yelpers all hyped up about it. Lots of alcoholic choices, bad food. If you are a foodie, don't bother to try this at all.
The place only have high tables and stools, not a nice sit down restaurant. It does have waiter service and our waitress was super nice.
I do have to say their popular rotisserie chicken was on point. On point, but nothing out of the ordinary.
We had the special fried oyster of the day, bad. Shishito peppers, ok. The worst was the duroc pork belly. I wonder if the pork was bad or something, it has a really weird taste to it. And the fat to meat ration is 99:1.
