  1. I've been a huge fan of Brooklyn Brine for a while now. Mostly because they are locally producing spicy beans, the pickled green beans that are absolutely vital to a legit Bloody Mary.* I believe they call them 'Moroccan Beans' or 'Serrano Beans'…these are probably separate products now that I think about it, but they always serve the purpose.

You can find their products in nearly every specialty food store in this fine borough, so I actually didn't even know they had a storefront. But they do! And it's over here on President!

Evidently, this is the new factory where they produce their damn fine pickled goods; since they no longer share space with other folks, you can buy straight out of the front. It's a very simple shop: a lot of barrels, a couple of fridges, nothing to really write home about. But you're buying pickles, you don't need any bells and whistles.

It was just fate that I wandered by as I was running low on spicy beans. I came in all excited to talk about pickling and things, but the lady manning the counter…wasn't. I wouldn't call her unfriendly exactly, but it was clear that she hated me on sight. Not that I don't get that a lot or anything.

So once I got completely stonewalled on the pickle discussion, I just decided to buy my pickled beans and go. They didn't have my normal go-to, but in one of the fridges I found a jar of Spicy Garlic Dill Wax Beans (I'm assuming they were still in the experimental stage, as the label was handwritten). They are definitely different than spicy beans, but I've found them to be an excellent addition to anything, and fun to munch on their own.

Basically, Brooklyn Brine is making quality pickle products. All the jars are $8 in house, which is pretty much the same price as they are elsewhere. Not exactly cheap, but always tasty. Give 'em a shot, especially if your Bloody Marys need to be taken up another notch.

I'm looking forward to trying the pickles they are producing with Dogfish Head, but I will probably just find them at Stinky or something, because I'm pretty sure that Brooklyn Brine lady wanted to murder me.

*Seriously, these things poop all over celery as an accompaniment.

Combine McClure's Bloody Mix, Brooklyn Brine's spicy beans and some sort of local vodka (Brooklyn Republic, Industry City Distillery) and you've got a Brooklyn Bloody as good as it gets.

  2. If you love all things local and pickled, Brooklyn Brine Co has you covered! I have been a fan of their pickled goods for a while but I had no clue they had a storefront until recently, all thanks to Peter D!

The storefront itself is tiny but packed with the stuff you see in most of the stores that sells their stuff but also pickled things that you can't find elsewhere. They have a fridge of the stuff they're trying out to see if it's a success. Did you know they make their own preserved lemons? Yup. Now you know where to get it when it's time to make a Chicken Tagine!

Shop local, eat pickles and…that's all I got.
