My favorite kind of pharmacy!
Stepping in is like a blast from the past – it's styled like an old time pharmacy/apothecary. Aside from their merchandise, they also have old bottles in wooden cabinets and other pharmacy supplies (including a titration set) along on the walls. There's a large bar and a lot of seating (I didn't even realize there was a back area). It reminds me of Eddie's in Queens!
They have a huge menu for both savory food and desserts. It's a bit overwhelming, and I mean that in the best way possible. Since we had already eaten, my boyfriend and I went for 99 Problems ($18).
Three huge scoops of chocolate ice cream, a warm brownie, whipped cream, a dark chocolate shell, milkshake and it comes with a cherry on top. Yeah, you read that right – it is topped with a vanilla milkshake. It is a huge dessert. In the battle of (wo)man vs. food, food won. The warm brownie was a nice touch, and the ice cream was pretty good. It wasn't the best ice cream I've ever had, but I did enjoy everything.
What a charming dessert place. The place makes you feel like you're in a classic black-and-white movie. I visited on a weekday afternoon and the place had a good number of customers, but not crowded. I wouldn't be surprised if this place got super crowded during weekends though, especially on hot sunny days.
Menu:
Lots of different kinds of sundaes, ice cream, ice cream floats, milkshakes and egg creams.
Their sundaes look amazing. Somebody had a lot of fun coming up with all the crazy concoctions. Definitely would like to try one of them next time.
Coffee Egg Cream – never heard about this supposedly born in Brooklyn drink. The original version has chocolate syrup instead of coffee syrup. Anyhow, it tastes rather funny. It's like cappuccino mixed with carbonated water. Hmmmm. I mean I finished it but don't think I'll be craving it again. It doesn't contain neither egg nor cream. So if you're try it if you're curious.
adorable and mostly authentic "soda fountain" from a bygone era. Seating is limited but I walked right in and was given a table at about 5pm on a Saturday. By the time I left there was a 5-10 minute wait. Nothing much, but word on the street that there can be a wait.
I got the grilled cheese sandwich, which came with chips. It was good, nothing unusual but good. Also got a Hibiscus Sparkling Soda which was really good – I'd recommend getting one of your choice of flavors, just because old style sodas like this are uncommon and delightful.
Prices for savory items are really great. Where they get ya is on the sweets.
Got the half sized Sundae of Broken Dreams. It was good – a scoop of vanilla ice cream on a bed of pretzel rods and caramel syrup, topped with whipped cream. Like I said it was good. $10 good? Not on your life. It's $15 for a full sized (which I guess would be multiple scoops?). I mean, you can't go to a soda fountain and not get a sweet, so I'm glad I did it. Once. Other choices were ice cream floats, milkshakes, and egg creams. None cheap.
Service was standard.
Decor was fun and a throwback. It would be a great fun first date spot (and I mean that in a totally un-ironic way).
Not returning – at least not regularly – due to price. But glad I went.
I came here tonight with my girls to have some of these old fashioned sundaes.
Specialty Sundae:
Cookie Monster (Full Size)
Ice Cream Floats:
Flatbush
The Anyday Sundae:
Toffee (Junior) with Caramel
Strawberry and Cream (Junior) with Caramel
Me and my friend's junior sundaes were already melting away when it got to our table that was a disappointment. I wasn't really scooping up the ice cream but drinking it out of my spoon. The whipped cream had absolutely no sweetness in it so bland. Why was the caramel sauce at the very end…should've drizzle over the bland whipped cream.
Overall my experience was eh and I really hated that our server was rushing us out of our seats when there were plenty of room towards the back and the counter area.
Good sit-down ice cream shop. Their floats are fantastic and the variety is really nice to choose from. Many different kinds of sodas and different kinds of ice creams. Had a cherry soda and vanilla ice cream float and tried their banana chocolate chip ice cream. I only wish I had tried their peanut butter sundae!!! Next time!
I came here with my boyfriend after a yummy dinner. We've been meaning to come here for a while and we finally did!
Parking around the area on a Saturday's night is relatively easy. I didn't have any problem with finding parking.
I ordered the brownie sundae and my BF had the broken dreams. We ordered the half size which was perfect for a good dessert on a hot summer night.
The brownie sundae was sweet and yummy. The brownie was soft and warm and the chocolate icecream was creamy and chocolatey.
The broken dreams was good too. It was a sweet and salty mix and the pretzels with the icecream combo was a perfect mix.
I can't wait to go back again!
Yup, I figured that choosing to only order egg cremes was an error in judgment my first visit. To be fair, I ventured into this lovely establishment with my health-conscious, super skinny roommate and his equally-minded twin (I still love you guys and you're welcome for calling you skinny). Sundaes were not an option that day.
On this beautiful, sunny Mother's Day, I returned with two other more sugar indulgent friends, giddy for the glucose influx we'd soon experience. The environment truly stands out when you walk in as it transports you to a different time and place. The details of the deco– vintage bookshelves holding up a scattering of books, an old teetering scale, empty glass soda bottles, and array of aged oddities, evoke a sense of comfort and nostalgia.
After a less than five minute wait for three on a Sunday afternoon, we ordered the Affugazi Affogato and the half size of the Sundae of Broken Dreams. *note: the Affugazi Affogato only comes in the full size, but worth the unbuckling of your belt, and an added bonus in glorious aesthetic for your Instagram-itchy fingers.
The Affugazi Affogato's vanilla cake bottom acts as the perfect porous sponge for all of the flavors to seep into it as you satisfyingly pour the steamy Brooklyn Roasting Co. espresso over the top of the mound. You begin to salivate, watching the fresh whipped cream melt and cave in to the espresso's heat and weight. The milk chocolate hard shell, is just another perfect dimension on top of the ice cream, waiting to be cracked into and enjoyed.
It may have been because I started off my cheat day with pancakes, but I personally enjoyed the Sundae of Broken Dreams more during that sitting. That salty sweet combo of chopped pretzel stick pieces mixed with the remainder of the sugary ingredients, along with the contrasting temperatures of the warm caramel and cold vanilla ice cream… hit. the. spot.
My inner child (okay, okay… I still am one) loved the Sundae of Broken Dreams, but my adult palette enjoyed the complexities of that stunner, Affugazi Affogato. We really broke the rules and started mixing the moist cake of the Affugazi Affogato with the gooey caramel of the Sundae of Broken Dreams. Arrest us.
Ended the fantastic visit by using their sidewalk chalk outside their door to draw a hopscotch and skip our way down the block.
Neighborhood gem.
Best ice cream parlor in Brooklyn!
I almost forgot what century we were in, aside from the clothes we wear but it was super retro. You come in and order a sundae from the "jerks" and just sit back and enjoy the sundae. It's just you and some good ice cream without any TVs or futuristic ice cream machines. The ice cream was delicious, super creamy and creative. My girlfriend and I ordered the brownie sundae and broken dreams, both were delicious. Next time I have to try the 99 problems, it looked crazy!
There's nothing bad to say about this place, the vintage pharmacy feel coupled with the old fashioned ice cream parlor really makes the ice cream taste all the better.
