  1. This was such a fascinating place. Went there for one of heir open house hours on a Saturday morning with a friend. The rooftop farm has a lot of cool things. It has chickens, a beehive, kale, sunflowers. They were selling their own fruits and vegetables with a section for ugly veggies.

Its a very family friendly place as they had cheese making session with the young'uns where they showed them hownti make goat cheese. That was fun, even though I was not a kid. They also had coloring books and the tour guides/instructors/activity leaders were very friendly.

Its a for profit farm who use drip irrigation. Apparently they have a lot of bird issues of eating their crops. It was deifinitley a fun place to check out.

  2. Kind of hard not to love a forward thinking urban farm built on top of a tall building with wonderful views of NYC and the surrounding neighborhood. Besides the educational, volunteer and culinary events they have, I had to keep reminding myself that the meal we made after hitting up their open market held on Saturdays was grown just a mile from my apartment. Who'd of thought? Incredible.

  3. It is a great concept to grow greens on a rooftop that would otherwise be nothing. We were here for a private party and it was great! There were even chicken on there! Support locally grown produce.

  4. Are we in an office building? Is there really a farm up there? Yes and Yes. This farm is located only a block away from the train station in a fairly industrial area of LIC, on the rooftop of what seems to be a management company building.

Though some of the crops were a bit dried out from overexposure of the sun, the farmers make good use of the limited space and sell their produce on Saturdays (a bit on the pricey side, but if you like supporting local businesses, this is a nice way to do it) and what is not to love about the sweeping views of Manhattan, just across the water?

I am a sucker for all things "hidden in plain sight" and Brooklyn Grange has definitely won me over. Be sure to visit before they close for the season (Oct. 24th).

  5. An urban farm in the rooftop of an LIC building! I've been meaning to visit their market since I found out about it after my first visit to COFFEED. I finally did this summer and what a wonderful thing to have in the city! Come visit them on Saturdays when the market is open and you can walk around freely in the farm. I recommend getting coffee and a snack from downstairs to take it up to the roof and enjoy in view of the city and of this farm. And of course, seasonal produce can be bought here just like other farmers markets. The selection is just limited in comparison. They also have a CSA of you're interested.
