Brooklyn Kolache Co

“My favorite is the sausage jalapeño and cheese, mushroom goat cheese, and the blueberry and sweet cheese.”

“But after actually stopping in and trying a Cherry & Sweet Cheese and a Chorizo & Egg kolache, I was speechless.”

“Pretty much the only good thing about driving between Austin and Dallas is that West, TX is on the way.”

  1. What are kolaches? Honestly, I think they're a Czech doughnut with Texas influence but you can argue otherwise as I eat your kolache. Brooklyn Kolache Co is the only place I know that sells them and finally had the chance to try them.

From the outside the space looks unassuming but from the inside, its actually quite nice and cozy! There are multiple seating areas and even outdoor seating for warmer weather working. There were a lot of people working and on weekends they don't turn on the wifi until 2:00PM which is an okay policy for me.

You can choose from savory and sweet kolaches and I ordered one of each-the mushroom and goat cheese plus the poppyseed. Both really delicious! The texture of the dough has a nice chewiness to it. I did prefer the poppyseed one but it's because of my sweet tooth. At about $3-$4 for a kolache, they won't break the bank and much like doughnuts, they run out of the kolaches towards closing time so if you want to get one, the earlier the better. Haven't tried all the kolaches but will be back for the other flavors.

Happy eating and remember: Don't deny, satisfy!

  2. I just moved in the neighborhood and had to do a couple errands in the area. It was rainy and all I wanted was to get somewhere inside, dry out a bit and have a good coffee.

I stumbled upon this lovely little place (the great reviews on yelp didn't hurt) and I was surprised to discover these delicious kolaches!
I just came back from Austria and was craving for poppy seeds (something you commonly find in Austrian, German, Hungarian, Russian baked goods and pastries), I just couldn't resist when I saw their poppy seeds kolaches!! They have so many different options, I will have come back to taste them as well. Definitely worth trying, the cappuccino was great too, I think I'll come back regularly, I also want to try their cold brew. (Walk afterwards though….gotta burn those fluffy pastries at some point!)

  3. This place is great. I went for the first time this morning. I got the bacon egg and cheese kolache and it was delicious. The coffee is really good too.

The staff is super nice and I will likely be back if I'm in the area. It's kind of awesome. I want to try the sweet ones.

  4. The kolaches from this place were on fucking point. I tried the chorizo, egg, and cheese and jalapeño, egg, and cheese kolaches and they were absolutely amazing with the hot sauce. I also tried the sausage and cheese kolache with the spicy brown mustard (served on the side) that was delicious. The cappuccino was also really good….strangely, the coffee paired well with the hot sauce/spicy jalapeño taste of the kolaches. Relaxed vibe, friendly staff, good price…two kolaches and a cappuccino came out to about $12 and left me feeling plenty full. Will definitely be back.

  5. Cute atmosphere, good music, and the most delicious kolaches. The berry and cheese one is my favorite. Their coffee and chai are good as well. Service is great and it's never super crowded. The back room is spacious but can get busy with a lot of people working on their laptops. There is basically always space in the front though.

They also have a cute little patio in the back!

  6. This was my first time having a kolache (pronounced "colah-chee") and they were better than I expected. I love discovering new and different ethnic foods so I did a quick wiki search and found out they originated from Czech as a sweet fruit pastry and are well known in Texas where there's a large population of Czech immigrants. Anyhow, back to the food – they look like unassuming bread rolls but once you take a bite, the bread is a light pillowly texture that you didn't expect at all and better yet they come with different choices of meat to actually fill you up.

They come in both sweet and savory choices but we got there late in the day around 3:30PM on a Saturday and most of the kolaches were gone. Luckily they still had their popular jalapeno and sausage kolache which was good, not too much sausage and a nice little kick from the jalapeno. We also tried their chili dog kolache which was just chili and sausage and was twice the size of their regular kolache. Prices are about $3.50 to $4.00 depending on which kolache you get but definitely good bang for your buck for the meat kolaches since they actually fill you up.

There were plenty of seats for us when we got there and a big back area where there were a bunch of people with their laptops. Seems like a great neighborhood shop to grab a bite and spend a few hours surfing the net or reading.

  7. They say that if you've been to college, you're somewhat "collagey." And that if you love "Rock The Casbah" and "London Calling", you're sort of "Clashey." So I guess if you're a stuffed pastry from Texas, then you're "Kolache."

I don't really get Kolaches. They're all over Houston and wildly popular but they do nothing for me. However, Brooklyn Kolache does them well, and whereas in TX it's overkill, in NYC it's unusual and unique and deserves investigation and attention to see if you like them as much as all my exs (who live in Texas) do.

In any case, as far as Kolaches go (pronounced COAL AH CHEE), this Kolache is pretty good, but more satisfyingly, the limeade was excellent. I'd come back here for the limeade but I guess you have to be Texan or Czech (or perhaps both) to get Kolaches. Or maybe if you adore all forms of pastries. I'm pretty picky about my bread and my pastry. It takes quite a lot to impress me.

But the Bro Ko Co, they can definitely have a 5 star rating for originality, decent price, and lovely service. Not to mention the Limeade. Which I already did. So yes.

    Hey, I just met you
    And this is crazy
    So here's my number
    Kolache maybe?

  8. Came here at the suggestion of my Airbnb host and I am glad I listened to him!  I was pleasantly surprised at how good my latte was.  They had a variety of sweet and savory kolaches-which were both pretty good (I had the Pumpkin Cheese & Sausage & Cheese).  I can see myself coming here every day for my morning latte if I lived in the neighborhood.  There is a Dunkin Donuts nearby…I don't know why people would choose to go there instead.  I'd much rather give my money to a local business than a cardboard cutout coffee/donut shop.
