A-OK. Let me start off by giving the corn bread a major shout out 🙂 lol because I really had to order extra #dontjudgeme. The corn bread will be the reason why I come back — maybe not the only really but yummm!
So before this location opened, they had that wall blocking it off so in my mind I was thinking that they were actually going to have a legit Brother Jimmy's in the Dining District with waiters/waitresses, sit down ordering, etc. Boy was I fooled lol so it's set up like every other spot in the Dining District but the perk is that they do have their own bar (taps, beers, wines).
I ended up ordering the BBQ pulled chicken with the yams and my mother ordered the ribs with collard greens. Each platter comes with a piece of cornbread (too small),side of your choice (tiny), and a pickle. For the price, I'm going to go ahead and say that the portions are a tad bit distorted. Like why was I still hungry?? lmao
Brother Jimmy's in the city would never leave me hungry. They overfeed me and send me home with dog bags. This spot right here is a little disrespectful with those portions. But I'm not gonna say that the food isn't good because I definitely enjoyed my meal and so did my mom. The pulled chicken had a good flavor and the yams were yummy (jus a tad too sweet). We tried the sweet tea and I liked it.
A few hiccups upon ordering and considering the food was already cooked, I'm not sure why I had to wait for my food to be called with the number they gave with the receipt. The service is sus but I will give them a semi-pass because they didn't open that long ago and it takes time to get it back. I might try them out again but with all the other options available to me in the Dining District, I'm not sure if I will.
Brother Jimmy's BBQ, now in Long Island. Interesting.
Brother Jimmy's BBQs in NYC is a bar and as an afterthought they serve BBQ. I was hoping since they moved away from the mothership in the new Garden City space, they'd concentrate on BBQ. No such luck, what I had today was typical Brother Jimmy's BBQ.
The bar – Tucked in the corner of the Dining District is the space. The bar is nice with Sam Adams seasonal on tap. Order your food at the counter but if you want a beer, you'll need to place a separate order at the bar.
The counter – There are some very interesting BBQ items. I've been in Texas all last week and I told everyone, the best BBQ places are in NYC. Texas can kiss my patootie, NYC rules. that's right, I said it. I need my brisket fix, I figured today lemme try Brother Jimmy's BBQ brisket.
Now mind you, this location is in a mall. Quality can be iffy. It was. The brisket was tough like shoe leather. I had to eat it with a knife and fork. The website says they slow cook the meat for 4 to 14 hours? Hey Brother Jim? I'd ease up on the cook time. And I got the marbled meat, still tough.
If you're in Long Island and want a good cuppa coffee? The only coffee choice is Starbucks. I go to Starbucks sometime twice a day. I HATE STARBUCKS. That's what BBQ in Long Island is to me. It's here and even though It can be sketchy, I need to be real accepting.
The Brother Jimmy's Brisket, it was tough but I'll come back. BBQ is still BBQ. I'd like to try the pulled pork platter. I'm not saying this place is bad, I gave it three stars. Its a nice looking spot with Sam Adams on tap. You can never go wrong with that combination.
PS, the cornbread? Is top notch, 5 stars
For what I paid, I'm not a fan.
I ordered the Spice Rubbed Half Chicken (comes with one side, cornbread and pickles), Banana Pudding and a large soda. Total was $19.33. Ouch. But after a long weekend, I wanted to treat myself to some good food. I was handed my plate and was kind of surprised. Everything looked so… small. The chicken looked dry with not a lot of meat, I was given 3 small slices of pickles, and the cornbread was a small square. I threw some BBQ sauce on the chicken and was ready to feast.
But- one half of the chicken was under cooked and all pink inside. In my photo, the half chicken is actually 2 separate pieces. I took photos of the under cooked meat, but I haven't posted it because it's gross. The half that was cooked tasted fine, but was really dry- so I have to smother it in BBQ sauce for each bite. Mac n Cheese was tasty and the cornbread was good too. Just wish I had more of everything!
The Banana Pudding was ok. When I lifted the lid, the top half of the vanilla cookies was stuck to the lid. All the bananas were also black in the center. Not too appetizing. The container did not have any dates or markings, so it makes me wonder how they decide when a pudding has been sitting there too long.
I didn't show the under cooked chicken to the manager as I was in a rush, but I sent an email to Brother Jimmy's corporate. I got an apology.
Don't think I'll be coming back here. I know way better places to get BBQ on Long Island, and almost anything else in the food court is a way better value.
Being someone who has American BBQ as one of his favorite cuisines, I was intrigued by Brother Jimmy's BBQ after they opened up in the dining district. When you first walk up, you will find that the atmosphere differs from your typical food court joint, as in addition to the cooking area, which was tantalizing thanks to the smell of smoke from cooking, there is also is a cozy and rustic bar with different types of beers and wines on tap. At the counter, I was assisted by two gentlemen who were friendly, efficient, and helpful. Since I was unsure if I wanted the BBQ Chicken or BBQ Turkey as I like both, I went with the BBQ Chicken and no cornbread on their recommendation along with a side of Yams and an Iced Tea to wash it down. When I received my meal a few minutes later, I enjoyed it overall but I found flaws that keep it from ranking among the best barbecue I have had. While the 1/2 BBQ Chicken was large in portion size, tender, and well spiced, I found that compared to some other barbecue chicken I have had, it was a bit on the dry side, which is a shame as it would have been perfect if it were juicier. Also, I enjoyed the Yams, which were sweet, soft, and complemented by tangy pieces of lemon rinds to cut the sweetness of the yams. The salty and briny pickles were also very good! With most barbecue you expect a good sauce, right? Well, Brother Jimmy's is mixed on this measure. I was disappointed with their regular sauce, which had the overwhelming flavor of tomato, making it taste far more like ketchup than barbecue sauce. Thankfully, the Chipotle BBQ Sauce was the saving grace, as it was sweet, savory, and spicy. Also, the Iced Tea was refreshing and well-brewed. The price for my meal and drink came out to be $15 in change, which I find to be average given the large portion size. While Brother Jimmy's is not the best barbecue I have had, it is definitely worth a try if you find yourself in Roosevelt Field's dining district.
Disclaimer: If 3.5 stars were a thing, I'd click that amount for this place. Last night, this was my food of choice as I visited the mall with my girlfriend and one of my buddies. When you walk up to Brother Jimmy's, it kind of looks like a hybrid between a fast food joint in the food court and a well-styled quick serve restaurant. Of the three of us, I was the only one to choose my meal for the night from here and went with the pulled pork platter (which comes with cornbread and one side [for me it was mac and cheese]). I had read some negative reviews about the wait time between order and food arrival, but it really didn't take too long to receive my generous portion of pork, creamy mac and cheese, and large cornbread (as well as a couple of pickles which were a nice touch). We moseyed over to the taproom area which gives you some BBQ ambiance while still in the mall. Now back to the food. The pulled pork was nicely pulled (best verb I could think of) and had little to no fat. As for taste, it was meaty, but didn't blow me away on any distinct BBQ flavor. Along with the pickles, cornbread, and mac, it made for one of those meals where you shove a piece of everything into your mouth just because it makes sense with how it all works together. My gripe (and reason for a split star review) was mostly with the sauces. Three are placed on the tables in the taproom area (original, Carolina, and chipotle) so it's easy access, but the sauces didn't add much to the meal. All three were a bit too loose in liquidity and the chipotle didn't really carry the kick you'd expect from it. Overall, I could've went down to 3 stars, but I enjoyed the meal enough to sanction a return trip sometime, boosting it to 4 (but remember, it's more like 3.5).
Tried the newest and last addition to the Food court at Roosevelt Field and it was lousy. I tried the Carolina Pulled Pork platter which comes with cornbread and a choice of side dish. I went with Mac and Cheese. The meat was room temperature and tastes like leftovers that have been sitting around. The portions are small for the price your paying which in this case is nearly $20.00 if you include a small soft drink. The Mac and cheese was only slightly better and vaguely warm. The cheese sauce didn't really have any flavor either. Two stars is being kind. I mean the Pepperidge Farm quality cornbread was passable. Not rushing back. Disappointed.
I came here with my friend for lunch. We got half rubbed chicken and the other chicken dish. We also ordered sam adams on draft and the chardonnay. The prices were a little high but our food was pretty good. The platter came with a side and some cornbread. The cornbread so good! It had little pieces of corn which was very good. So happy. I just wish a was a little less pricey.
3.5 stars but I'll round up to 4.
It's strange to see a Brother Jimmy's in the mall but since Roosevelt Field's renovation, it almost feels…Right? Digital signs, square payment systems, and even a tap room filled with beer…All within a mall food court. I decided to give it a try since I was intrigued that it was now here rather than setup as its usual restaurant. I ordered the pulled chicken with cornbread and candied yams. It took almost 20 minutes for them to get my order. Here's the thing, you can watch the guys putting the order together and they were just not doing anything half the time which resulted in the delay. The food was ready but they were too busty BS'ing with one another.
Finally I got my food and it was delicious. The chicken was perfect and it's hard to screw up cornbread. Honestly if the food was mediocre this may have been a 2 star review due to the fact that service is slooooow. I understand it's a food court so they call your number and you get your food but the fact people are watching you? You could at least appear to be working. With that said, the food is delicious, the prices are just right, and it's nice to have something different in a mall.
