Solid if just okay diner food. I could also do without the attitude from the waitress. If you don't like working at where you work, don't work at where you work. We had to flag her down several times throughout just to get her to brusquely and seemingly begrudgingly take our order, refill our waters, etc. Wonderful.
Ordered blueberry pancakes, the Athenian chicken, and a cup of French onion soup. Since it's a diner, they have a large menu and cook up tons of things, and so we ordered a breakfast dish and a couple dinner/lunch items.
The French onion soup was good, btw. I love me a good French onion soup, and this one was pretty good~ onions, broth, bread, cheese… looks simple but hard to do it well, and this one was done well.
Athenian chicken~ was fine, seemed kind of busy, taste-wise. I think since they put olives and feta on top of it they thought to call it Athenian. It was fine, though; the chicken was moist and the sauce with the juices was generously poured on the entire thing; it was good, ol' diner food.
Blueberry pancakes~ big, fluffy and chock-full of blueberries; good! "Pancake Factory" is an apt name, indeed. Go here for breakfast!
The dishes are large here~ it is a diner, after all~ but, still, needs to be said. I'd probably give it a 3 if it weren't for the waitress.
The menu here is so extensive, it seriously rivals a novel.
I'd just like to vouch for the Brownstone fries. Please do your taste buds a favor if you appreciate them at all, and let them try this dish.
There will be a long wait during weekend morning/afternoons. Upside is that service is quite fast.
The popularity of this diner baffles me. If you're in the mood for diner food during Sunday brunch prime time you'll find yourself waiting too long at Brownstone. I've been here twice, both times for breakfast foods; I just don't take dinner seriously at a diner. Both times I have been served a mediocre breakfast except the pancakes which are fluffy and tasty and alone are worth the 2 stars.
Everything else here has fallen short. The bacon sucks. The eggs are super basic. The omelettes are uninspiring. Also the waitress telling me that the orange juice was freshly squeezed when it was clearly NOT is just not OK. I was too tired to cause a fuss; besides, she was pretty aloof as a waitress so I wasn't trying to flag anyone down to complain about juice. But the pancakes are worth it.
Come to Brownstone for pancakes. If you get any other breakfast foods you'll be disappointed.
Alas, I'm sad to say that I had to take my original review down a couple of notches. Didn't have a great experience here over the weekend.
It started out with the menu….there was a hair on the second page of mine. Use your imagination….I won't go any further with that.
The server was very nice but extremely flustered. Seems that "everyone walked in at the same time". What's confusing is that we made it early enough to avoid the rush and the diner was still half empty. They're used to large crowds…by the time we left, the line was pretty long.
It took a really long time to just get coffee. When we finally got our order in, we waited forever for our food. Several tables near us turned over before we were able to eat…they arrived, ate and left…all before we did.
The food was decent; I had the nutella pancakes again…but they weren't as good as I remembered. Hope the bloom isn't off the rose.
Awesome Awesome and Awesome ! We love the Brownstone in West NY and this place was just as good. Its much smaller then West NY but the food is excellent. Went with a party of 11 and they seated us in 40 minutes on Mother day. No issue at all.
I ordered a TBLT and it was so good! I also had fries with gravy and cheese. I never had fries like that before and they were totally AMAZING!
I also ordered a drink from the bar. The bartender is rocking.
Our server was so nice and helpful with the menu. I wish I had a server like her everywhere I've visited.
I will visit again.
Next time I must try the pancakes.
I can't believe that I haven't written a review for Brownstone yet, but having it be the 100th review for me is apropos. We stopped by here for the first time during our apartment hunting in JC, and remarked how awesome it would be to have such a great diner near our new apartment. Once we moved into JC, Brownstone diner has become one of our top "go-to" places. We go here when we want to grab a quick bite; when the weather is bad and we don't want to go far; when we have friends visiting and they saw this place on "Diners Dives & Drive-ins"; but mainly we come here because we know exactly what we will be getting as the food here are always consistently good.
Brownstone is always extremely busy during weekend brunch time, but the staff here are extremely efficient and the line moves pretty fast. Pro tip, the best time to come is for dinner, as they serve the same menu and there is never a line. So if you want to try this place, come during dinner time.
I wanted to highlight some of my favorite dishes here:
Triple D Buffalo Chicken Pancake Wrap – My absolute favorite dish here! This was the dish featured on "Diners, Dives & Drive-ins". It is basically a giant fluffy pancake that contains buffalo chicken, mozzarella, roasted peppers & blue cheese. It is AMAZING! The sweetness of the pancake complements the spiciness of the chicken, and the saltiness of the blue cheese. Moreover, I love how the different textures come together with the fluffy pancake, the gooey melted cheese and the crispy fried chicken. The dish also comes with two scoops of butter, and there is always a bottle of syrup at the table. The portion is ginormous and I haven't been able to finish it in one sitting. However, it tastes just as good the next day. If you only get one dish here, I highly recommend this one!
Broiled & Stuffed Seafood Combo – I would lie to myself by believing that this is a healthier dish, but it is really not. This is meant to be shared between two-three people, as the portion is ridiculously big. It contains lobster tail, broiled scallops, shrimp stuffed with crabmeat & stuffed filet of sole, all of which are bathed in tons of butter. Who doesn't love butter and seafood?! The quality of the seafood is above average for a diner and for the price point. My personal favorite is the stuffed sole.
Seafood Fra Diavolo – another giant dish meant to be shared by two people. The pasta is well cooked and the sauce is pretty delicious.
Other top dishes include the Comfort Burger, the Supreme Burger, Philly Cheese Steak, and Chicken Parmigiana Sandwich. Don't get me wrong, all the traditional eggs, pancakes and waffle dishes are great too, I just wanted to highlight the few dishes that we consistently order and love. The only thing is that I am not a huge fan of the dessert here. I've tried a few of the pies/cakes they had, and none really impressed me.
Service here is always great, the servers are friendly and will give you useful suggestions if you ask. They are always quick with the free refills, and the food always come at a timely matter regardless of how crowded the place is. Overall, Brownstone is a great neighborhood diner with delicious food.
I came here with my bf on Monday at noon. It was surprisingly busy. We were seated quickly, although there were a few people waiting near the door. To start we had an orange juice and coffee. The coffee was good but the orange juice tasted nothing short of Sunkist. For our lunch we had French toast, sunny side eggs up on toast, bacon, and the show stopper pancakes. All of the food was really good for the price! I think my favorite part of the meal was that they put a big wad of butter on the plates. Nothing to write home about but but The Brownstone is a good spot for a simple Monday breakfast/lunch. The staff is friendly but the service is not the quickest. I wouldn't come here if I was in a rush.
