This may be the first "Western New York" spot in NYC. The prominently advertised Buffalo wings are fine, but I think the must-have selection here is the beef on weck sandwich. The salt, the horseradish and the juicy meat provide a compelling variety of tastes and textures. The fried bologna and the "famous plate" (similar to Rochester's trademarked "garbage plate") will have to wait until next time, but I did enjoy a loganberry drink tonight.
It's been mentioned on Yelp before – I don't do wings. ::pause for horrified gasps and dirty looks:: I know I know, I just don't like all those silly bones. I do like tenders though (and boneless wings when available) and Buffalo's Finest has some of the best tenders everrrr. Our first visit was about 4 days after they first opened. The neon sign in the window proclaiming BUFFALO WINGS caught our attention and we stopped in to check it out. We've been there a total of three times in 2 weeks – soooo… yeah it's realllllly really good! I'd go so far as to say its my new favorite in Brooklyn and I imagine it'll stay that for a while…
Some things to note:
The food menu* is simple – wings, tenders, several sandwiches and a bunch of sides. Sauces for the chicken range from mild to x-hot and include both the famous buffalo sauce as well as bbq. I've tried both medium sauces now and they are both delicious. The bbq has a spicy kick that sortof gives you the best of both worlds. But for your first visit I recommend trying their medium buffalo sauce.
After the initial toss of the sauce on your wings or tenders the chef puts it all back on the grill and cooks them for a couple mins longer. That hit of the flat-top gives the chicken this extra layer of flavor with bits of crunchy caramelized sauce – it's SO GOOD!
And then there are the milkshakes.** ::sigh:: ohmymilkshake. There are 50 FLAVORS to choose from! And the guys are making up new combinations every day. So far I've gotten tastes of the Chocolate (#12, classic & delicious), Chocolate Strawberry (#23, has potential but I prefer the classic chocolate or classic strawberry to the combo) and Coffee Strawberry (#46, totally weird but I couldn't stop drinking it). I suspect with summer finally here it won't take me long to check several other flavors off the list.
Beyond the food – the hospitality here is awesome. Everyone we've met there so far has just been so nice. John, one of the guys running the place, is super personable. He's got stories about the business, life in upstate NY*** and where a lot of the menu inspiration comes from, etc. Buffalo's isn't really a sit down and dine type of place (although there is a counter w/ a few stools) but I could hang there all day with this crew. And eat buffalo tenders, of course.
