My friend and I stopped in for the breakfast buffet before leaving. The decor is lovely. We didn't think to ask about the price of breakfast, assuming this place would charge upwards of $30 or something. Nope, $50 each. Whaaat? The food was fine, but it certainly wasn't worth that much. I'm sure this place would be great for dinner, but it was an unimpressive breakfast.
We came in for drinks since we had the Diamond Member vouchers for cocktails.
I went with a Martini which was well prepared and large. The wife had a Bloody Mary which was fantastic since it was house-prepared and not a mix.
Service was excellent and the décor and ambiance are about as old school as it gets in Manhattan.
We would like to return next time for dinner as they had a very appealing menu and wine list.
The setting and venue at Bull & Bear is beautiful, and the food we settled for was very tasty. My issue was with the service.
To begin, there was no one at the entrances to welcome a lunch pair around 12:30pm. We had to walk around the dining room for several minutes to 1) verify they were open (because we were the only two in the entire place) and 2) find someone to seat us at a table.
Once we sat down, the waiter provided us with a menu that only contained 5-10 options. They were missing several of the entrees advertised on the website (and on the yelp menu) with no designation that these would not be available for day-time dining.
When I asked about other options, my request was ignored and I was told to come back another time. "Those types of dishes are best for you in the evening." To which I responded, "Thanks for letting me know what I should order at a particular time of day." I only had a few hours in the city, so I didn't have enough time to come back for dinner.
Anyways, the waiter didn't ask the kitchen, manager, or anyone else. To me, a restaurant that charges premium prices and clearly advertises lunch selections should consider accommodating simple requests. Or, a simple fix- please update your online portfolio to reflect in-restaurant options.
Bull and Bear was such a treat!
My workmates and I were looking for somewhere to grab a meal after a crazy week at work, and ended up at the Bull and Bear. I'm glad we did! We arrived at 10pm with a party of six, and the staff had no problems with seating us and making us comfortable – just what you expect in New York!
Being in the Waldorf, many of us opted for a Waldorf Salad. It was spectacular – the apples were beautifully fresh, and the walnuts adding the perfect amount of sweetness and crunch.
Being late at night, I didn't want a full meal, so ordered the lobster mac and cheese. It was the best mac and cheese I've ever had (and I have eaten more than a few in my time). I also munched on a little of my friend's filet. It was extremely good. Perfectly cooked (rare) and a wonderful taste.
For dessert, I opted for the sorbet. It was beautifully presented in a toffee bowl, and had big chunks of raspberry in it. Just beautiful!
I definitely hope to return at some point!
During my stay at the historic Waldorf Astoria, we decided to make this our last dinner before returning home. This was also the most convenient choice as the restaurant is located on the first floor of the hotel. Now my meal… I ordered a glass of chardonnay and oysters as my appetizer, I must say the oysters were very fresh. As my entree, I ordered the Fillet Mignon and Caesar salad. My steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare and seasoned well. The Caesar salad was a perfect refreshing and light side. As expected, the food was pricey and service was impeccable.
Lets start off by saying like the hotel, this place is expensive. I guess if your staying here you can afford $55 for a breakfast buffet, but seriously, who can eat that much breakfast! Selections were ok, standard eggs, sausage, pancakes, hash browns, pastries, fruit etc, all presented well. Service was what you'd expect in the Waldorf, no complaints there.
Nice place, i'm sure its packed at night as the bar is a good size as is the dinning room.
There's a little dinner 1 block away that offers a similar breakfast for 12 bucks…..not as nice surroundings however, but the food is as good in my opinion.
Horrible service, lousy overpriced cocktails, and real need to train staff in customer service. I came here last night (quiet Tuesday night around 630-7) and sat at the bar with my friend, and had to nearly wave down the bartender to get an order in.
I ordered their margarita because I feel that's hard to get wrong and she ordered the cucumber martini. She wasn't thrilled with her martini and my margarita tasted like it was made with cheap tequila and sour mix…no fun when you're paying steep prices at a classy joint. I can get better at a dive bar in Brooklyn and not have to pay an arm and a leg.
Moreover, our bartender seemed like he was either having a long bad day or just doesn't understand customer service. It wasn't busy and our bartender couldn't muster a "hello" or "how are you tonight?" and half the time he wouldn't look you in the eye when he was speaking to you. He'd brashly ask you if you knew what you wanted to order and that's it. When our food arrived he touched some of the fries with his hand in an effort to save them from falling onto the ground, which was pretty gross.
Not sure what was going on but pretty certain I won't be back.
I have only been here for the breakfast buffet. Once a year I set up at a convention/tradeshow at the Waldorf Astoria and for the past three years we treat ourselves to the buffet. It is INCREDIBLE. Their apple wood bacon is so good I would rather eat it than a good steak. They also have some fantastic sausage, blintzes with a hot mixed berry sauce and/or warm Nutella, an omlette station and of course the best lox I have eaten. This year the lox was not that good, in fact, it was dry, but they did just bring it out. (The only reason I am knocking off one star.)
The service is second to none. It may be $50 but in my opinion well worth it.
