Burnside Biscuits
“On top of that,as a self-proclaimed broccoli connoisseur, I can comfortably say that the broccoli roast was one of the best I've had.”
“The pimento mac and cheese was great – the cheese had the perfect amount of sharpness and creaminess and the noodles were cooked al dente.”
“It's a massive glorious meaty breakfast topped with a phenomenal sausage gravy that requires multiple napkins and probably a shower afterwards.”

Had . The club chicken sandwich/biscuits. Very filling. Good and satisfying. Had with the delicious mesculin house salad. Had to go . Ate while driving back to Brooklyn. Yummy. Side biscuit with honey is enough for 2-4 people.
We need a half star option!!!! My finger lingered over 2 and 3 stars for a few mins….
The inside of Burnside is adorable. Pretty much what I picture a southern kitchen to look like. However, it was a very hot day and they had the doors open with no AC… Swamp ass city.
Positives:
Prosecco on draft! It was cold and delicious.
Mini corn muffins with lovely assorted jams and maple butter.
Chicken and waffles. I went with maple glazed chicken… It was pretty tasty, chicken was crispy and waffles were pretty tasty.
NOT positive ( I don't like the word negative)
Service was pretty slow, but I couldn't blame the guy… It was super hot in there. No waters when we sat, no one cleared off our table of empty glasses and used plates.
Brisket brunch meal- eh. Brisket wasn't very good and it had way too much BBQ sauce.
I will definitely go back here in the fall and try there regular menu instead of brunch.
on another quest for Southern cooking again.
came here with my brother last weekend and got there around 1pm. the place was quite packed and we waited about 20 minutes for an inside table (85+ degrees outside, no thank you). we were led to the back and sat near the door leading to outdoor dining area. we really liked the decor, it's modern take on rustic, southern interior design.
here's the list of things we tried:
-home fries: not what we expected of cubed, seasoned potatoes, but rather, flattened and crispy baby potatoes. the potatoes were really tender and tasty, but my brother was kinda "meh" on it because it was not what he expected. on the other hand, i did really enjoy it.
-biscuits: kinda dry and a tad too much salt/baking soda, the mouth feel was a bit off. but slathered with maple butter or sausage gravy, it was fine.
-sausage gravy: peppery, just how i like it, very tasty and goes so well with the biscuits.
-chicken and waffles: opted for the nashville hot (not hot at all) and waffles were kinda springy, not crispy or anything. the chicken was also kinda bland, definitely had to doctor it up with some hot sauce. this was just ok.
-two piece fried chicken and biscuit: brother got the sticky honey and thought the sauce on the chicken had a weird after taste. he was kinda meh about this one too.
-sweet tea: being from atlanta, my brother and i both agreed that sweet tea needs to be sweet, this was not it.
i really wanted to like this place, but aside from the cute decor, there's really not much else to be excited about. our server didn't really check up on us, the food was kinda lackluster, and just kinda disappointing overall. will i be back? maybe not.
Here's the dad's perspective on this fine establishment. The wife, the rug rat and myself arrived at opening time and had our pick of where to sit. Wonderful. We come prepared with an iPad to keep the kid occupied and staying in his high char, but the waitress was friendly and brought the kid crayons too. And as many others have said, the food is indeed quite good. I had a huge sausage link laid over a bed of pan fried beans, a side of tortilla chips and a soft boiled egg. Wife had roasted eggplant. The boy had sausage patties. Great experience all around and came in under $50. Pricey for family breakfast but this isn't your average breakfast place.
*This review is dated when it was first opened for the first couple week.
The space is LARGE. There is a front area to sit down at while you wait for your table which was really quite a wait since they just opened. Or if you had ordered a drink or drinks, it is also a chill out area. The bar space is limited in terms of seating and not really suitable for standing around with drink in hand. The back area is where the diners are mostly sat with an open kitchen set up.
My friend and I ordered a lot of things. But let's start with the Moscow Mule with the candied ginger. One of my favorite drinks. It is very well balanced and I just simple love the candied ginger.
The food was pretty good. The BISCUITS was very buttery. It was very comparable to what you might find at a local diner if you visit one of the many Southern states. GEECHIE GRITS was mildly spicy. COLLARD GREENS was simple but good. The SAUSAGE GRAVY was one of my favorite things that I tasted. Very savory. Skip the HAM GRAVY. It was just okay.
The star of any Southern joint or Southern inspired joint is the CHICKEN. I felt the chicken was pretty good, moist. The crunchiness could have been better though.
The service was good. We were also sitting directly in front of the open kitchen so it was partially because of the prime real estate I believe. The food is on the pricey side. It was expected though as it is a branch off restaurant from the same group that owns Bareburgers.
Semi-Fan.
Aside from Korean fried chicken, this is probably the best fried chicken I have ever tasted. The service was kinda meh, but great food.
I came here for lunch after I took a Monday off from work for a friend that was out of town and visiting and realized they went ahead and made other plans with other people. So much here. So what does one do when they are upset and pissed off? They go hail their best friend that was still unemployed at the time to go on a foodie/boozie crawl across Astoria.
The layout of the space is really bright and vibrant. Open windows facing out on the street. White, clean tables with beautiful vases of flowers and plants. They have some kind of special every day. I think wine was half off on Monday but we went with just a bottle of beer each. Monday: Brewery inspired dinners, Tuesday: Free champagne with all orders of fried chicken and waffles, Wed: 1/3 off a purchase of a flight, Thurs: All night happy hour, The weekend they apparently have live music.
The lunch was decent. It's a bit pricey I thought initially coming in but when I started to make my way through a dense and rich buttermilk biscuit slathered with a chunk of buffalo fried chicken, blue cheese, and pickles with a side of coleslaw I felt overwhelmed and only ate half of it. It was good. Not mind blowing. I hear if you want to be blown away you order some monstrosity called 'The Moose'. It's a $17 heaping biscuit with ham, wild boar sausage, neuske's bacon, cheddar cheese, fried eggs, and sausage gravy. My dining companions had ordered for lunch the cheese dreamz sandwich which was noted as being pretty decent and the house club sandwich with grilled chicken. The later was dry as hell and not seasoned well. Kind of a failure. The coleslaw side was oddly a highlight of the experience. It had a little bit of heat, crunchy, wasn't too mayo based, and had tiny raisins I believe inside of it, lending it to have both a sweet and spicy flavor I've never had before with coleslaw.
I'd come back for brunch if I wasn't watching my wallet but there are better options in Astoria. Good biscuits, good slaw, slightly dry chicken. I'd like to try their cheese grits, pimento mac and cheese, and their chicken and waffles. OH. They also have cocktails called the Peanut Old Fashioned, Hot Buttered Rum and a Ferngully that sound kind of amazing. Barely etching by with that 4 star Yelp review but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt until next time.
Burnside Biscuits far exceeded my expectations. The food, drinks, service and ambiance come together to create this perfect classic Southern restaurant.
Let's begin with the important stuff: THE CHICKEN. It's been too long since I had fried chicken this damn good. My favorite is the Nashville; crispy and spicy. THE BISCUITS are large and baked to a perfect rich buttery piece of heaven. The biscuits also come with honey butter because they just want to win you over by any means necessary. If only I could eat like this every day. I also highly recommend the cocktails for the flavorful selections packed with a punch. I tried Tea Thyme and Blackintosh and thought both had just the right amount of alcohol. Yay for knowledgeable bartenders!
As for atmosphere, think southern modern vintage if there's such a thing. I love the pattern wallpaper and window doors that brings in tons of sunshine. Everything comes perfectly together here. It's pretty casual on the weekend but be prepared for a wait. The restaurant is also kid friendly if you plan to bring a little one around.
I highly recommend Burnside Biscuits and cannot wait to return for chicken and biscuits.
