  1. #Kosher

I'm sorry to read about some folks' poor experiences here. I cannot disconfirm the pattern, as a Caucasian person I walked in and was served immediately by another Caucasian woman on staff. I had actually called them the day before to order a kosher cookie cake. They don't normally make them, but had the ingredients available and were able to accommodate me. It wasn't the traditional flat cookie cake I was used to, it was more like a layer cake made out of cookie dough (I'm not complaining!). Overall the process was easy and the receiver enjoyed the baked goods. Will return for any future kosher baked needs.

Side note- how stinkin cute is their logo? I feel like it should have an old-timely jingle to match.

  2. We ordered a cake well I advance for a friend's birthday. Didn't have a good feeling about it at the beginning, thought it would change after, but no, still don't like it.
We ordered for a regular chocolate cake with vanilla. So basic. But we received a chocolate cake that looked so Christmasy in the middle of the summer. Some people would think it was a nice touch, but neither the birthday girl not the friends were too happy about it.
It tasted really dry and stale and lucky we had wine around to gulp down with it.
Didn't seem like a well maintained and run store. We noticed a lot of inexperienced students working there. I have nothing against students working, but some good training should definitely be given atleast in the aspect of customer service.
No one even acknowledges your presence when you walk into the store. Not happy with this store and not going back.

  3. Ugh, establishments like "Butterflake Bake Shop" are exactly why I stay away from Teaneck, NJ, a town full of old-school Jewish folks.

I'm sorry to have to pull out the race card, but it is obvious that the people who run/own this bakery are somewhat racist. It is APPALLING that even in 2011, establishments like this are still kept in business.

Let me elaborate: if you're not Caucasian, they hand you off to their colored "help" to serve you.  In addition, the sans serif font used for their bakery is really deceptive — from the exterior, you'd expect it to be a modern, hip, or trendy bakery. You're in for a rude awakening.

When I walked in, I saw about 5 Jewish grandmas and 1 grandpa (he was wearing a yamaka… yes, for real!) standing around behind the counter. I saw a young Indian girl behind the counter also and asked her a quick question about one of the cakes. She looked petrified, didn't speak, and pointed to one of the elder Jewish folks. Unfortunately, none of them looked my way.

Scenario: There was a young white couple in front of me. The Jewish grandmother that was serving them was super friendly and even gave them free samples, which initially, I thought was being handed to all of the customers on line. They took a quick look at me and stopped. I thought, "Umm…. Ok?" and shrugged it off. When it was my turn and NO OTHER CUSTOMERS were in the shop, the 5-6 Jewish senior citizens did not even glance at me or pretended to be busy. One of them finally said, "Flora, you help her." Flora was clearly one of the help — she was Mexican and barely spoke English. It took about 15 minutes for her to get my order right because of this. TOTALLY inefficient. She couldn't even answer me when I asked her what types of cheesecakes they had, etc. I was really irate at this point.

A few minutes later, an older white male walks into the bakery. The ears and eyes of the Jewish senior citizens perk up and one of them immediately begins to help him. She also offers him some free samples. WTF, right?

So then, I asked for a few plastic forks or knives before I left. Apparently, they didn't have any. WHAT KIND OF BAKERY DOESN'T HAVE ANY FORKS OR KNIVES? A cheap ass kind, that's what!

    TAKE YOUR BUSINESS ELSEWHERE.
