Gluten free and Diary free!! The allergic to everything husband LOVED this place. Said it ranked in the top of GF/DF baked goods. The bunt cake with chocolate on top was a real winner.
So glad I discovered this little gluten free haven! Everything I've tried so far has been fresh and delicious (you can't go wrong with their GF muffins). The staff is friendly and they usually offer free samples. I always leave with a smile only face 🙂
By far, this is one of my favorite bakeries plus it's fairly close to my home :)…which is kind of dangerous. This place is packed near Jewish holidays because everyone is trying to get their challah / dessert orders (no joke). Line was out the door the other day.
They have a list of all the ingredients for each dessert so definitely ask them if you have concerns. I am very allergic to soy, and I know that gluten free / dairy-free desserts tends to have them as a substitute so need to check every time. I love the lemon poppy cake, the blueberry corn muffin and their brownies. The brownies are gooey and cakey at the same time. The lemon poppy is moist and lemony with a bit of the crunch from the poppy seeds. MMMmMm.
Location: UWS does have some interesting spots to visit. BTW bakery seems to be one of them. I have been longing to come here for a while since it has always been on my bookmark. But I seldom have the time to strolling around the neighborhood until now i finally made it here. The store is incredibly different from what I thought originally. It is small. Basically, do not even attempt to be here more than 10 mins. They do not have seats to sit and only a small bench to eat your bakery and leave. Nevertheless, the decoration is well intended – nice, sweet and very cute.
Food: I had their lingers tart, and black chocolate cake… I am not impressed by neither of them. I do not know why.. It 's not too sweet but it is not well balanced either. I had a mini bunt cake back in Chapel hill, which is so much better than this and cheaper. So I just believed that I wont come back again.
Price: I am especially not satisfied with the price. a cake is 5.5 and the tart is 4. And both are not what I love the best.. so I felt like my price did not pay what I indeed had. … a bummer for sure.
Service: the people is nice in a very offended way.. I told her that I wanted … a chocolate bunt cake.. and she asked me twice … And I was ordering the tart.. she was like… do you want it also and gave me the look.. that I felt like maybe I do not have the money to afford it?!
Ugh
Overall: 3 star is pretty bad. Do not come. Let this place die.
I don't go to bakeries a lot (carbs go straight to my legs) but By The Way is one bakery I can't help but go to over and over again. Even though it's unbelievably out of my way. I wish they'd open up a location downtown; having one on the UES as well as the UWS seems a bit unnecessary in my opinion. It's also SUCH a tiny location. Just buy and go, there's nowhere to sit and chat. I've tasted almost all that BTW offers, from their muffins to their layered cakes. While most of their items have blown me away, there are a few that disappoint.
The blueberry corn muffin is one of those few. It's dry and grainy and lacks flavor. Out of their muffin offerings it's definitely the weakest, I recommend the pear cranberry. It's tart and sweet. They also have some killer cakes. Especially the coconut layer cake. I brought one to a girlfriend for her birthday and she LOVED it. To the point that she wound up eating it with her hands later that evening. My personal favorite is the sour cherry coffee cake, although my friends like their brownies.
Considering all their items are gluten and dairy free I'm surprised they haven't come up with a few vegan offerings at this point. It's a dietary restriction (or choice) that plenty of people in NYC are a part of, and that BTW should try to cater to. Just ask Chef Chloe. You get the vegans on board and you'll never be out of business.
It's a bit too sweet and not as satisfying as when I first tried it. Still good but not as excited about it as I was.
I was looking for a bakery to buy a going away cake for my co-worker who was getting promoted and I stumbled across this place on Yelp. The reviews were pretty solid and the $ for the pricing category had me intrigued for that area (the $ in the pricing is definitely inaccurate – I spent nearly $50 on a tiny cake). The cake was good, but it was really really sweet and had way more icing than cake, which maybe is enticing for others, but isn't enticing for me. The service was pretty slow. I waited in line for nearly 10 minutes with only 2 people in front of me. There isn't anywhere to sit inside and overall I thought it was just too pricey for the experience, with Magnolia Bakery scattered around the city.
After a week of on a gluten-free/dairy-free diet, I decided to pay a visit to this little bakery since dessert is at the bottom of my food pyramid. I was so impressed. First off, there was a decent variety of offerings: muffins, cookies, brownies, mini bunt cakes, and even full size cakes for walk-in orders. Secondly, for a specialty bakery, the prices weren't through the roof, rather on the lower end of the scale ($2 cookies!).
I got the sour cherry, lemon poppyseed, and apple crumb mini cakes to take home and share (The shop's too small to eat in, besides the couple of stools in the window.). Each was great. The apple crumb was probably my favorite because it taste just like an apple cider donut. How they made this stuff without gluten or dairy is some magic because there were no weird this-is-not-real-dessert chalky flavors. Definitely a place I'd visit again!
