I was really excited to try this place and stopped by for breakfast. I got the mushroom + onion frittata which was on some-sort of whole wheat/grain bread. They NO LONGER offer their juices (except for fresh squeezed orange juice; they stopped making juices about a year ago I was told) , which I was a bit disappointed to see. Service was a bit inattentive as well, not friendly and I had to wait in front of the register for a bit until someone took my order. My sandwich alone came out to $7.50 — which is just waaaay too much for a mediocre and salty, normal sized breakfast sandwich. Their overall pastry selection looked good and they had tons of cool sandwich offerings but I was not at all impressed by the flavors or service…
Cafe Bari
NY Manhattan Chinatown
1pm Thursday 10th December 2015
Four Stars
Located in high traffic area on Broadway and Canal, Cafe Bari was surprisingly empty. It's probably because it's a little high class for the illegal purse, watch, luggage sellers. Their sign says "since 1993" but this particular store has been open for a month or two at most. The inside is starkly clean and bright for the area. There is only 7-8 bar seats by the street facing windows. There were playing classic rock like CCR, the Beatles, and Pink Floyd.
I ordered a Cortado ($3.5). It only comes in a to-go cup but it's a vegware compost able cup with their personalized logo. Their espresso machine is hand controlled and produced a rich, nicely bitter, caffeinated shot. The foam was thicker than I prefer and didn't have a pretty design.
The Almond Croissant ($2.75) was crispy on the outside with sugar and slices of almonds for texture. The inside was flaky with a slight sweetness and heavy dose of almond flavor.
Overall, I enjoyed this stop by coffee shop.
Perfectly sized pastries and croissants. RARE.
I usually practice in Queens; however, I had a case in housing court at the Centre st courthouse. En route to the subway, spouse says "Ugh, that sounds like hell … arguing in housing court over a rent stabilized apartment in Manhattan – in Chinatown?!". I told him to shut it, because I had to focus.
I got off the R train at Canal, needed coffee and went to the first cafe that I saw… Cafe Bari. I ordered iced coffee, it was fine. But then my eyes saw the pastries and I could not hold in my excitement.
Croissants and pastries that were not the size of a baseball mitt? Croissants and pastries that were portioned for 1 person? Could this be true? I rarely (and dare I say never) order croissants in the US because of the guilt. No, not calories. The guilt that comes from knowing that that one croissant could feed a family of four in 160 out of the 192 countries in this world. Then the disgust sets in, realizing the gluttony and greed in our culture represented in over-sized pastries that are evinced in our guts. So I refrain.
But not at Cafe Bari. I ordered a croissant – it was reminiscent of a media luna that you would order in S. America. It was perfect! I honestly think that the last time I ate a croissant, in the US, was in or around 2002 when I was a server at a French and Spanish tapas bar in Ann Arbor, MI.
In hopes of a quick and cheap brunch prior to my doctor appointment nearby, I came here for one pastry mini chocolate croissant $2.75 and ice tea $3.75. Service is very inattentive as one guy prepared my ice tea and attain my pastry but did not ring the sale for payment. I stood waiting to be checkout only to be ignored into the void for several minutes until one staff member inquired if I needed help- 1 star. Ahh, I felt so invisible not an iota, not a particle in space! Seats are extremely minimal as this café is designed for takeout. The teas are by Harvey & Sons. Café Bari does have an extensive juice menu selection. My chocolate croissant was very stale.
Overall, I was not impressed. MEH for o-kay!
Their fruit and yogurt parfait is a solid midday snack– creamy, slightly sweet, and filling without weighing you down. I also got one of their shortbread cookies covered in powdered sugar, inside the large glass jar on the counter– and that was smooth in texture and delicious, too, though pricey.
This is a cute new cafe in the area that offers one of my favorite coffees (La Columbe), I ordered a chai tea and two cookies which came out $10 (Pretty expensive), The chai tea did not taste good but the fresh home made cookies did. The place is very small but looks very clean and minimal. Since it's so new the service is still getting accustomed.
I work really close to here and saw that this place opened up about 2 weeks ago.
I did a little bit of research and it seems this is a re-opening of Cafe Bari in Soho but now on the corner of Canal St and Broadway. It is offering less that the other 20-year establishment.
I certainly hope this place makes it as they provide very decent coffee (La Columbe coffee), pastry items (from Balthazar), daily soups and sandwiches.
I ordered a medium soy latte ($4.75) and it is a very decent cup of joe. It isn't Everyman Espresso or Blue Bottle, but it works for this area!
Good luck!
