I've lived on the UWS for more than a decade and today was the first time I tried Cafe Frida. Honestly, I wasn't missing much. My food was fine – I got the steak tacos and sweet fried plantains. They were good – but I can get the same meal for much cheaper at many other taco spots in the City.
I had a wonderful day at the Natural History Museum across the street before coming here for a much needed lunch and beer. My boyfriend and I were seated in the corner near the door. Tight, but cozy. We ordered our beers and started looking over the menu. Pricey for Mexican, but it's NYC so I don't expect anything less. However I really hate spending over $11 for a margaritas soooo beer it was.
We opted for the two soups on the menu to start. He ordered the chicken with rice and I ordered the Mexican tomato. Wow – I absolutely loved the Mexican tomato (Soupa Azteca)!!! It was really spicy and flavorful. They give you a dish with cheese, torillas, etc so you can add whatever you like. i threw it all in!
My main meal was nice and light. China Pablana salad, which was just avocados, tortilla strips, tomatoes and an avocado dressing. It was pretty good. My boyfriend ordered the braised lamb burrito. Also good!
Overall a pretty decent spot that I would go back to.
I just went to New York City yesterday with my boyfriend on a day trip through Central Park. After walking around for a few hours we got hungry and decided to come here for a quick bite. The host and waiter were very friendly and the service was pretty quick. Prices here were good though drinks we a little pricey (14 dollars for a margarita?! well I guess that's NYC for you). The guacamole was THE BEST I have ever tasted and I honestly love Mexican food and eat it a lot. The reason this is not 5 star is because the tacos fell short. I ordered 3 chicken tacos (I think it was around 12 dollars) and they were pretty bland even with my verde which I love. My boyfriend's dish (which was some type of shrimp rolls) was amazing though. They also have lunch specials so for like 14.99 you can have a soup and an entre. Not a bad deal if you ask me. I would go again if I was in the area, maybe I would get the shrimp next time instead.
The service was slow but friendly staff. The guac did not disappoint. The jalapeño salad didn't say what kind of greens were in it and I was dummy to not have asked It came with kale which I can't seem to enjoy raw. Oh well the tuna was really good though and so were the enchiladas suizas.
After spending hours wandering around Natural History Museum, we decided to look for a place close by to grab a bite to eat.
This place looked pretty busy but we decided to try our luck anyway. We weren't able to get a table right away but there were several seats open at the bar.
I went for the frozen mango margarita, guacamole and pork tacos. All were delicious, especially the margarita and tacos. We ordered the guac to be spicy, but I thought it was pretty mild. Overall it's fairly priced with quality food. Only suggestion is that they have a guac and salsa combo instead of having one or the other.
Went here last night for dinner for the very first time after passing by for years and years. Now I know why I've never been compelled to eat here before. Nothing was really terrible but there were only a couple of things that were good. Let's start with the good: the service was good and relatively fast. We were a party of 8 and they got us drinks, appetizers, entrees and dessert in 2 hours. Not easy for a larger group. In addition, the guacamole was pretty good and my friends liked their soups. I happen to like my guacamole with salt and some heat and this was just that. The rest of the food left a lot to be desired. I ordered the skirt steak which was kind of tough to cut and chew and not very flavorful. Well made skirt steak should be neither of those things. A couple of my friends got the fish tacos–neither one of them ate very much. The salmon seems to go over better but was not a resounding hit. For dessert we all had coffee and tea but no one wanted to look at the dessert menu. Our feelings about the prior courses did not bode well for dessert. I feel a little guilty about going bad about this restaurant (trust me, I don't always fee that way) because the staff did seem interested in making us happy. With that said the food was slightly below average and there are too many good Mexican restaurants in NYC to come back here.
We've heard some good things about this spot. It seems as if Mexican is not cheap in the city. I suppose I need to accept this.
Margaritas are not good. Not much flavor. Save your $11.
Guacamole and chips is about $13. We ordered it with medium heat. It definitely could have used more spice. It is a nice size, but one would hope that for the cost. It was a bit bland, but I enjoyed it. Chips were good too.
I had the steak fajitas. They were $23. All fajitas were the same price. I asked for a little cheese for them and bam $3 on our bill. Come on, that was sneaky. The waitress offered to mix steak and chicken. Since I asked I was told that's an upcharge. Huge turn off. Sneaky doesn't earn you more of a tip. I liked the fajitas because it was a large portion. They mixed in zucchini, mushrooms and other tasty vegetables. The steak was tender and plentiful.
My hunny had chicken tacos. Shredded chicken. Not my thing, but flavor was good.
Service was great, minus the sneaky up charges. I would recommend it especially if you're hungry.
Food and service are good. I didn't leave here raving, but it didn't disappoint either. The Guac was made really well and was most memorable. I had the fajitas, which todo fue bien con eso. My friends tried the sangria and I hear it's good, but a bit sweet.
If I were to come back, I would go for the plantains and tres leches for dessert.
Ambiance is cute and good for a group of 2 or 4. Check it out.
