  1. i bookmarked this place on yelp for a while ever since i saw pictures people posted on IG and i was really excited to check it out during my trip to NY since i love cafes and i fancy cute latte art. it is indeed a cute place, however, our waitress didn't seem too happy when she learned that we only wanted to order one mocha for the two of us (i looked on the menu to make sure if there was a minimum order per person but didn't see any), and she kept on looking at our direction while talking to someone else who seemed to be a manager(?). that lady then came by and asked us again if we weren't ordering anything else before taking away everything on the table, which made us very uncomfortable. will not be visiting there again.

  2. Cool breakfast spot – got a table right away for Sunday brunch at 1 pm. Cool vintage ambiance and comfy booths. Unique eggs with tomato Merguez sausage. Paleo-friendly.

  3. Beautiful little Cafe Gitane! French Moroccan food in a little cafe type restaurant adjoining the Jane.

With its warm orangey colors, cream colored festooned hanging balls, whimsical touches like a crocodile on the wall and a YMCA clock (possible hotel reference) hanging from the ceiling, this place gives off a muted festivity (if that's possible) that I really enjoyed.

It's popular with groups, both for brunch and dinner (they also have a full bar).  But I popped in at an off hour for some coffee (and because when in Rome… ) some of the famed avocado toast.

I don't usually go to restaurants like this alone but everyone was friendly, food and latte were great, and the prices were totally fair.

  4. Had a lovely dinner at Cafe Gitane with my gal pals and definitely was not disappointed. There was a lot of couscous, seared salmon and the like to go around, along with Lilith cocktails (which will cost you a pretty penny but are super delicious) and vino. Avocado toast, gorgonzola with walnuts and honey and happy conversation = a very happy bunch.

Post-din din we headed over to the ballroom for drinks and we had a lively crew when an event started and spilled over toward the bar. It was all-in-all a great evening.

  5. Oh la la! The perfect blends of French and Moroccan food come together at Cafe Gitane. Situated a block away from the Whitney, it is the perfect place to grab dinner after a night of art.

This particular location is located inside the hip Jane Hotel, conveniently on Jane Street. The warm pink lighting and eclectic decor give the place an underground Parisian atmosphere. The music, art, little French details, and Moroccan inspired furniture add to the overall experience. I thoroughly enjoyed looking around and observing all of the unique facets of the decor.

My friends both ordered the cous cous which is what they are known for. I had a bite and was delighted by the mixture of flavors and textures. The cous cous had dried fruits and nuts mixed in. It was topped with hummus and a sprig of mint and laid in a pool of pesto–all of the things I loved. The best part was its whimsical presentation.

I ordered the organic chicken satay which came with white rice, a spicy peanut sauce, and a delicious carrot salad. My favorite part was definitely the sauce! It was perfectly creamy and had a very distinct spicy aftertaste. The carrot salad was an unlikely addition to the plate, but a tasty one nonetheless. The acidity in the vinaigrette and sweetness of the carrots definitely cut through the richness of the sauce.

I can't wait to come back to try more! The service was great and the food was even better. This was my first Moroccan experience and it definitely won't be my last!

  6. I have been coming to Cafe Gitané for years now. I've been to both locations and enjoy the Soho location better. The ambiance is better. Food in both locations is comparable and delicious. Love the Moroccan/French fusion and decor. Reasonably priced. Service is above average. I usually don't order the same dish twice and every dish I've had here is delicious. It isn't too fancy or two casual. Has a nice elegance without being posh.

  7. This is one of my favorite lunch spots in the city. The place has a very cozy feeling to it which I love. My favorite entree to order is the couscous with sausage and hummus on top. AMAZING! Really it's so good. Their chocolate bread pudding is everything. It comes out warm with ice cream on top. I usually finish with the chocolate mocha which is delicious and very cute because they do a paw print on it. Tip: This place is small so prepare to wait at least 30 minutes to get seated. Overall I Highly recommend this place if you are in the area.

  8. After a long morning spent at the High Line nearby, Cafe Gitane came up on Yelp and appealed to everyone I was with, so we decided to give the cafe a try.

Tucked away in the Jane Hotel, Cafe Gitane has the feel of a small cafe in the south of France with the food and decor to match. The cafe is very rustic with pastel walls and unique artwork covering the room — even the bathroom had a miniature diorama to marvel at.

Anyway, enough about the decor. I took a long time to order because everything on the menu looked so incredible, but ended up getting a fresh watermelon juice and their signature couscous dish. The watermelon juice had a thicker texture (since, duh, watermelon), but it was delicious and refreshing nonetheless as summer rolls in. The couscous came in a neatly piled tower and was topped with hummus, and it was incredible. You can get the couscous with a few different meats added in, but I am a vegetarian so I opted for just the eggplant. I am a huge couscous fan, and this dish was both filling and satisfactory.

When the bill came out, I was surprised to only be paying about $25 for such a delicious meal (normally something that good in Chelsea would come to more). Nonetheless, I didn't complain, and I can't wait to come back and try the veggie burger.
