Finally, I have found my dream cafe. A place you can sit down and study where there are plenty of plugs, free WiFi, relatively quiet, and an open atmosphere. The ambiance is excellent, and because the study room is in the basement, you do not feel like people are watching you like a hawk because you sat there too long.
The coffee and food here are excellent as well, and the prices are very reasonable. All prices already include sales tax in it. Highly recommended!
Excellent coffee, Blue Marble ice cream, lovely staff, good background music, a cute back patio, and quite possibly the best working space on the UES. Everything is slightly more expensive than expected, but I have no qualms paying $8 for my bagel and iced coffee knowing that I'll be productively working at a table downstairs for a couple of hours.
Jax is the only cafe on the Upper East Side that feels genuinely welcoming of customers who stay awhile– there are plenty of chairs, tables and desks; no time limit on the wifi; and tons of outlets. There are a couple of signs warning that outside food and drink is not allowed. It's a shame that these signs are necessary. If you set up camp with your textbooks and laptop at Jax, at least have the courtesy to buy your drinks and food there!
IN the area from out of town, we wanted coffee in any decent place that was not a Starbucks. Yelp directed us to the Jax.
The inside of Jax is nice and cozy for this time of post-winter. Can't grade its summer a/c ambiance, if it has any (being NYC, I know there's places where a/c is not exactly a priority).
Jax has the usual coffee suspects, and a good selection of nice Rishi teas. They've got some gluten free stuff (but not also vegan, when I checked). No regular decaf coffee either here, so you'll have to get a decaf americano if decaf is your thing. Upstairs part of the cafe was not unusual compared to a lot of your average small NYC coffee places; quiet-to-low murmur, noise wise. But yes. The downstairs is unusually large, and was wall-to-wall with hard-working, silent, computer worker bees.
Overall, a pleasant place to chill and or work in this part of the city.
Note: as another reviewer mentioned, do NOT bring visibly-from-outside food into this place. There are signs throughout indicating that you will be ejected into space if you do. I'm not against this, despite having a ton of dietary restrictions myself. I get why they do it – you give an inch, people will take a mile. However!, being that I am gluten / dairy / yeast free, and know that this is tough for some places to support, I do feel that a metropolitan place like NY ought to cut people some slack if say, they're eating a granola-type bar or something that their place does not sell, yet is not obviously from an outside food place. (Like say, a Larabar type thing.) YMMV.
Cute spot with a lot of seating in the underground floor. Variety of benches and recliners and desks to choose from. It was pretty packed already on a Thursday after noon around 4 PM so I can imagine it'd be hard to find seating on the weekends.
Cashier woman was really sweet and nice. $2.50 for a small drip coffee which isn't too bad. You also get a punch card. Buy 8 get 1free. You leave everything in a bin before you leave.
Pretty quiet surrounding. Good for getting work done and not so good for if you're catching up with a friend. But I Would definitely come back again whenever I have some projects I wanna finish up!
Great selection of drinks (especially for those, like myself, who love the work cafe situation but don't necessarily need caffeine every day). Very spacious downstairs with an exciting curation of mismatched chairs and tables They also have a small perfectly shaded patio for those looking for open air. Reliable internet. Power outlets within reach of every seat. This is the UES work cafe to beat.
TIP: Come early and sit right by the patio door. Great natural light, and the empty patio is perfect for taking calls throughout the work day.
Did I miss the boat? Cafe Jax has been around for way more than a hot second at this point, and I only learned about it a few weeks ago when the famous Mike C. posted about it on his Snapchat account! I'm so bummed I didn't know about it sooner, because it's a little bit of fantastic. I'm in this area quite often; my aunt lives two blocks away, and I'm always checking in on her apartment and picking up her mail while she spends her summer months basking away in Connecticut. (Ahhh, the life. Haaa.)
Cafe Jax is set on East 84th halfway between 1st Avenue and the subway constructed-wounded 2nd Avenue. It'd be easy to walk past, and it's located rather unassumingly amongst the other small apartment buildings. Walking directly inside, one is greeted with a small area boasting 6 little two-tops, along with tall windows along the street and fantastic red zebra-printed wallpaper towards the rear. A walk down to the second level yields a surprisingly large seating area! I mean, it's easily four times the size of the main level! Finally, there is a small garden in the rear; it feels like one of those small secret respites in NYC that you don't want anyone else to know about. It's easily to blissfully lose yourself while sitting on a bench back there.
Honestly…I always get the same thing whenever I go there. Ha! Though their menu is large, the Dough Doughnuts are always tempting, and the chai is always beckoning…I get the iced matcha latte. I've been a few times, and every single time, I get that damn matcha latte. Ha! Let's be honest: It's hard to find matcha in this area of the city. Though I prefer mine without added sweeteners, I really love the way they prepare it, with just enough of a subtle sweetness to counteract the traditional bitterness of matcha. *thumbs up*
This is really a unique spot for this neighborhood, a nice change from the 20 Starbucks in a 6 block radius. I can't wait to continue coming back. I may even adventure away from matcha, eventually. 😉
Amazing coffee house with a lot of character, great specialty coffees, milkshakes and a substantial amount of seating downstairs with an eclectic mix of tables and chairs, making this a great spot for conversation and especially for studying or getting work done. Sofas, chairs, tables of different sizes – love it – thought this would have been a perfect study spot in college or grad school.
I asked the friendly, helpful barista for a recommendation and took it – iced matcha (green tea). It was delic!
Also a big plus for their electronic Payment and receipt via email. I can't stand paper receipts and the receipt also allows me to remember for sharing – and remember what I ordered to write on Yelp too…
Highly recommend as a meeting Place with friends or to work/ study .
I like studying with a cup of coffee. BUT I love studying with a cup of "good" coffee, and loved my "study experience" here.
I ordered a soy lattee and a blue berry scone. After receiving my treats, I headed downstairs to study.
The Cafe has a very unique and interesting interior/designs/ and furnitures. None of the tables are "same," and there were many different kinds of chairs, tables, desks and couches. Each individual furnitures seemed very unique and special; If I lived near hear, I would definitely try sitting/studying at all different tables, and figure out which spot I like the most. I loved how there were many outlets!! Also I loved how clean the estroom was. (Caffeine = diuretics..)
The coffee was good and the blueberry scone was great as well. Definitely a great place to study!!!
