Cafe Metro is a standard NY cafe/deli serving the midtown masses for lunch. It is neither terrible, nor extraordinary. Personally, two things they offer stand out to me as being better than the pack:
1) Oatmeal Bar – in the AM, you can get a small/medium/large oatmeal with your choice of toppings. Everything from fresh bananas, to walnuts, to cinnamon, to raisins. This turns a usual oatmeal into a really amazing breakfast. I think I paid $2.00 for a medium with like 4 toppings.
2) Pasta Bar – Maybe just because pasta bars are nostalgic of my NYU Kimmel days, I love when a fresh uniformed man saute's my pasta and toppings just for me! Choose your pasta, sauce, and various add in's, and within minutes you have a hot delicious meal that hits the spot.
Cafe metro gets very crowded at lunch. I haven't found the salads, pizza, or sandwiches to be amazing, but I'm willing to give them another shot if I'm around.
Bright clean inviting space as you walk in from their Broadway street entrance, breakfast menu items were immediately to the left a lot of great healthy choices. I had an order of a egg whites, turkey bacon, grilled chicken wheat toast and blueberry Greek yogurt. I ordered a large double espresso to go along with the grapefruit juice. Reasonable prices first class take out containers and utensils. Prices and value truly outstanding. I plan to return here on my next business trip
My omelette didn't blow me away this morning, but it was substantial and adequately made. I got one with bell peppers, spinach, and tomatoes, and it comes with potatoes and toast. For $6, this is a steal. But I got it to go and when I got to my desk to eat it, it was a mess because of how they put it in the bag. I also needed to add a ton of salt and pepper to give it some taste, after which I enjoyed it and was kept happily full.
We came to Cafe Metro to grab breakfast for an event – lots of bagels, muffins, and other pastries. A couple of staff behind the counter were really great. Playful, witty, and fun — this always makes a morning better!
They had some great breakfast items on display (veggie egg white omelet, etc.) which I unfortunately didn't get to try. If I went back, I'd be all over that!
Conveniently located one block from Penn Station, it is a great spot to hit before returning to Long Island after a morning in the city. I have eaten there twice and both times felt a little overwhelmed by the set up of Cafe Metro. Their poor signage was overcome by the helpfulness of New Yorkers. Both times I had the Athena Bowl with quinoia. Delicious! I at half and kept the rest for lunch the next day.
