“Came to Calexico and had a nice meal by myself, and the waiter couldn't have been nicer 🙂 Carne fries, mushroom quesadilla, and 2 for 1 margaritas were all fantastic also!”

Um… this is one of the best spots in NYC. Love coming here, just can't often because its not healthy to lol. I was introduced to the Greenpoint location years ago. Although it took a ling time for them to get their liquor licence when they first opened; the food was spot on. If its your first time, you gotta try the the fries. Better if you're with someone to share it with.
For me anything with their fish is a good idea to try as well. I've even brought my friend who originally lives in North Carolina but is staying here for school to this place. She says this is an option for now on whenever she wants Mexican food.
Think of slightly upgraded food from chipotle, this is what you'll get. Maybe it was a bad night but it was my first impression. Very underwhelming. Meat was extremely salty and I could taste curry seasoning. If I wanted curry I wouldn't go to a Mexican restaurant. I had the tostada salad which would of been decent if i didn't need a pitcher of water to wash all the sodium down and the meat didn't taste like halal cart. Had the Paloma to drink it was decent. Not worth regular price maybe for happy hour. In a nutshell the food sucked. It could of been way better but it wasn't so I'll stick with the Mexican restaurants that actually know what Mexican food is
My place of employment invited interviewees here for dinner.
After reading some reviews, I was excited to give it a go! I love good mexican food.
I was a little under the weather so I didn't order any drinks but the selection seemed good.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by a hostess and seated immediately, despite that the rest of my party wasn't present, which was nice.
Unfortunately, the restaurant was sub-zero (season=winter) and every time the door opened a chilling breeze swept through the restaurant. I ended up wearing my poofy jacket throughout dinner…no bueno…and I even ordered hot tea!
We ordered guacamole and nachos as appetizers. These were both very standard fare. The guac, was not tableside and was only average at best. I felt that I would prepare better nachos and guac at home.
For my entree, I had requested a fajita, though it wasn't on the menu. They did have this:
VEGGIE Rolled quesadilla
roasted peppers, caramelized onions, grilled corn.
So I asked, if I could just have this fajita style. The server's answer was "no we can't do that as the grill gets too hot and would burn the tortilla". This made less than zero sense to me as the soft tortillas are served separately from the grilled food. IN any event, I let it go and ordered MONTEREY FISH: roasted fish with grilled pineapple salsa and tomatillo sauce on a toasted flour tortilla. At best, it was only average but sounds a lot better than it is lol. I also ordered a side of rice and beans which I regretted because I did not enjoy it all and only took a few bites of.
There are several locations of Calexico within Brooklyn so I am not sure if they all lack the luster that I would like in my Mexican food but I certainly will not be revisiting this venue.
Food: only been here once- tried the ancho beef quesadilla which comes with a side salad.. That was great… They seem to have a lot of interesting cocktails too
Service: decent, definitely not overly impressed.. I came for a late lunch and sat at the bar.. Took a while to get a menu and the check
Ambience: clean casual.. Seems like a good place to get drinks after work
I love Calexico and used to get food from there regularly when I lived close to the Union Street location in Carroll Gardens. I was also a huge fan of the salsa verde and would load up on it, made any dish even better with the mix of tomatillo, jalapeno and cilantro. The night before I ordered from the Williamsburg/Greenpoint location into The Gutter. I wanted to order something different from the night before and was thinking of the Vegetarian Enchiladas because it said it came with the green sauce, which I assumed was the same one that I loved from their other location. When I found out the Vegetarian Enchilada had onions, I went for something else.
We shared the nachos, which were delicious and well worth the $11 (compared to their $7 salsa or $9 guacamole only options). Our drinks were really good and meant to last. l loved the take on Pina colada with pineapple thyme infused vodka.
I wound up going with the Black Bean Burrito "dressed" (with sour cream and monterey jack cheese drizzled on top for an extra $3). Unfortunately the green sauce was not the same I was familiar with. The whole dish had a weird tangy flavor that I wasn't a fan of.
Service was great. The hostess was incredibly communicative and provided frequent updates. They also had the NoWait app which was helpful and informative. The server was also very helpful and clearly paid attention.
The meal came to 40 before drinks, 62 after (cocktails at $11 a piece).
I really liked the decor, it was different than any other nearby place. I will be back but will go with my old standbys, carne asada and Union St. salad.
Met family here for Sunday morning brunch. It was a full house so we decided to sit at the bar. 2-for-1 bloody marys, bloody marias, and mimosas. Portions are just right. You won't leave here stuffed but you will be satisfied. From the brunch menu, the bartender recommended the Breakfast Tacos and I'm glad she did. Warm fluffy scrambled eggs topped with avocado, bacon, jalapeño cream cheese and their chipotle crack sauce over a warm flour tortilla. Love how light the meal was. It was a great way to kick start the day without getting the itis.
Mexican food is not one of the things that I crave. But I crave Calexico. Everything here is spot on–the drinks, the food, and the overall likeable atmosphere. Yes, this normally means you'll find young families with children, next to a table of a bunch of young, rowdy folks ready for a full night of drinking, but that's just a regular crowd at Calexico.
Everything here is pretty tasty–burritos, Guacomole, etc. the quesadillas are my FAVORITE because I find that it's the perfect portion, and they're grill pressed down to make them easier to grab and eat (and even tastier!) So whether you're a rowdy crowd pregaming before a crazy night, or you're just trying to get some dinner–Calexico is most definitely the place for you.
Really really meh experience. Came here for the Happy Hour (4-7) Buy 1 get 1 free drafts, well drinks and house margaritas.
Waitress practically ignored us. Maybe because it was the tail end of happy hour, idk, because it definitely wasn't cause the place was busy. We basically had to beg for a second drink. It was crazy! Bus boy comes around clearing away the dishes from the FIRST round and we have to ask HIM for another round! Wtf?
Food was ok.
Carne fries were ok BUT really skimped on the steak it was SUPPOSED to contain.
Nachos were huge but actually really awful, even with the ground beef added at an extra $4. Runny fake cheese, not enough guacamole. Ugh.
Margaritas were strong and delicious. Too bad our waitress was so inattentive we could only get 2. Oh well.
