  1. Calexico was my jam when I lived in Greenpoint!

My roommates and I loved this place because:
    – 2 of us are veggie and their bean burrito is the bomb
    – Walking distance to the apartment
    – If ever we were too lazy to walk… they deliver (:

I always get the black bean burrito. Perks of a veggie burrito: guac and crack sauce are included! I already know I don't need to tell you guys, but the crack sauce is where it's at! For $3 more you can make it a wet burrito. I've tried both green and red sauces — I prefer the green in terms of both flavor and consistency, as the red sauce is a little thicker than I'd like.

They also have great margaritas here and outdoor seating around the back, which is A+ on warmer spring/summer nights. I've gotta make my way back here to try the elote!

  2. I came to Calexico at the recommendation of someone that knows one of the owners. The overall esthetics of the place is nice. The wait time was rather insane for a Sunday evening (almost an hour).  So we took our order to go.  We ordered two burritos, the ran out of several items off of the menu (no fish).  So I ordered a vegetable burrito and my cousin ordered the chicken burrito. We also ordered the grilled corn.   We drove approximately 1 block to our destination. I opened up my food and it was warm, not cold yet but warm. Which I couldn't understand, especially after waiting over 20 minutes for my order. The burrito was just OK, not bad but nothing to write home about. The grilled corn was the absolute highlight of the meal.   I know that's not saying much but it's the truth…

    This was more of a 2 1/2 * experience.

  3. I come here once a month– I don't normally seat at the seating area more by the bar or the window spot. Mostly any time I come in it's packed and I can always find a spot with my friends at the bar.

The bartenders are pretty cool and they make the drinks perfectly. If i could rate the bar area alone I would give it 5 stars.

One of my friends recently wanted to go and she wanted a table– there was a bit of a wait but nothing out of the norm. The waitress was beyond rude!! Took forever to get our water– So I decided to ease her work load and head to the bar to order our drinks and pay from them at the bar so we wouldn't have to spend another 30 mins on that. The food took a long time to come out and it was cold. We didn't want to cause a problem since we knew nothing would change. The waitress looked like she doesn't like her job– and this I can tell from previous experience I have seen her scream at a couple of people. I don't understand why the manager still keeps her around.

The cherry on top was when she charged us for the drinks that I paid for at the bar!!! I told her that I went myself to get them and she called me a liar and that I was responsible for paying for my entire order— Beyond rude.. I paid for the meal and the drinks i had at the and also left the receipt from the drinks i got at the bar.

HORRIBLE! She should be signed up to a Customer Service class or just switch her job. Said that Calexico has to get a bad review based on the service of one waitress.

  4. I frequent Calexico mostly because it's close to home, and an easy meal. Would I venture out of my way to eat there? Not necessarily. But because it's an option, I do enjoy Calexico pretty often!

I usually order online and pickup on the way home. But I've ordered delivery many a time, and also dined in once. I'm always pretty satisfied. My go-tos are the burritos (baja fish is my favorite, but I also like the pollo and asada and even just the bean), rolled quesadillas (steak, pollo), and the elote. When I'm feeling extra, I like to order the burrito wet also–mm. The portions are reasonable for the price–$10 a burrito, which usually lasts me 2 meals.

Other items on the menu are ehhh. And if I didn't already figure out my usual orders, my rating might've lost a star. But it's a regular on my lunch and quick dinner grab rotation, so I can't complain!

  5. I've been to Calexico before, but this time was the tops. We were a 2 top, getting there around 7:30pm on a Tuesday night. Beautiful outside, and you know with a little bit of clouds, it was going to be a cotton candy sunset. We had to wait a bit for an outside seat, but we had a drink at the bar and just enjoyed the ambiance.

Our waiter was lovely, his name was Jay. I think he may have had too many tables, so he didn't really check in that often, but nothing but pleasant. I ordered the Tostada Salad with chicken. I basically stopped talking for 15 minutes while I consumed it, delicious down to the last piece of lettuce. My girlfriend got Carne Asada burrito bowl and had 2 thumbs up after dinner.

If you can get the outside seating it is definitely worth it. Nice layout. I haven't been there on a weekend often, so I assume that it is a total shit show, with food that good how could it not be? I will definitely be returning. A nice place to pop by if you're on your way to Greenpoint – maybe in advance of a Peter Pan donut to top of the day!

  6. AHHH, cannot wait to come back here! Brought my friend here for her birthday on a Friday afternoon/late lunch.

Easy to find a big table so we could spread out and order a ton of food. It's a small space, so if it was during peak hours, I'm sure it would be crowded and a bit of a wait. To the left there is a bar with some seats (probably can't fit more than 7-10 people?), and because people are boozing it up, it can get loud and shrieky on top of the music they are playing, so don't expect to have quiet, intimate conversations here.

Bathrooms — there are two, and they are big but dark. Not a place for a girl to put on makeup. Large mirror near the toilet, but again, not light enough to see anything. Seemed clean enough— as in not messy, because too dark to tell if it was filthy with stains or random shit spots anywhere.

Waitress was super friendly and sweet — chatted with my friend about the best margerita option. To me the drink was strong, but good overall.

    Now onto the food:

Appetizers : Carne Fries — not a lot of brisket in there, mostly beans and cheese sauce. The cheese sauce on top of the white sauce was too much, and it was hard to taste anything else, even the fries, beans. And it would have been nice to have more of the actual protein.

Salsa is spicy! But good for 5 bucks. It's small, think of a Pyrex 1 cup glass container, IF even that much.

Guacamole was my favorite! The only problem is how expensive it was. I make guacamole at home all the time, and the serving looked to be two small mashed avocados and a little tomato and onion. Normally that's fine, but for $10?? However, it was filling, so all was well

I SOOOO wanted to try more tacos but we were getting severely stuffed, however we forced ourselves for one taco each and it was delicious!

Pollo Asada: Simple, but very tasty grilling/marinade, with avocado sauce and pico de gallo.

Can't wait to come back and try all their tacos! Fluffy, warm, fresh tortillas really help too.

  7. I had dinner here this week and ordered elote, with chipotle pork and baja fish tacos. Everything was delicious. My favorite was the baja fish – it was crispy, but not greasy and very flavorful. I also enjoyed the margaritas, which were made fresh and pretty strong. 2 for 1 happy hour on margaritas and well drinks. This place is affordable, food and drinks came out quickly, staff is attentive and friendly. I'm a fan.

  8. Great late night meal. We arrived to our hotel pretty late at night and were looking forward to venturing out and grabbing a bite to eat before settling in. Our hotel gave us a list of restaurants in the area, but a lot of them were already closed (it was about midnight and by the time we would get anywhere it would be after). We short listed to the few options we had available and decided on Calexico.

Not sure if we were extremely hungry or tired from the flight, but had a great experience here with good food and good service! The restaurant was pretty busy for the time with most of it's tables full. They had a bunch of drink specials going as well.

We stuck to mainly food and the standout for us was the Elote – grilled sweet corn with a lime mayo, sour cream, cilantro, chile powder and cheese. We had a similar dish at another restaurant also in Brooklyn (never had/seen it outside of NYC before!) but this one was our favourite.
