I give it 3 stars for food and 5 stars for service and experience. Love the decor and how the whole place is set up. Makes you feel like you are in a different country. The waitress was super friendly. I ordered the pork over quinoa during lunch. The food was definitely too salty (and I already asked for low sodium) and did not really taste that great. This might be just personal preference or I might have ordered the wrong thing. I hear the cuban sandwiches are really good though. For dessert, they ran out of green tea ice cream but the sesame ice cream with roasted papaya was delicious. Remember to checkin for the free dessert! May come here again and try something else, but was not overwhelmed with the food.
Made reservations for a Saturday brunch and opted for their Bottomless option ($23 – 90 minutes). The staff here is really nice. We started our bottomless drinks from 2:45 pm and our server was kind enough to extend our brunch drinks by 15 minutes since their system shuts at 4:00 pm for brunch.
While they were very accommodating with many aspects, we felt that they weren't as attentive. Finding the server was a challenge and wait time between drinks was a good 7 – 11 minutes. The drinks itself were really good. We tried the Caipirinha, Mojito's and Mimosa's.. all good drinks.
For main course, we got the Maduro (was pretty good), Grilled Chicken Sandwich and Eggs Benedict (the Chinese sausage wasn't that great).
It wasn't that busy on a Saturday afternoon, but the weather wasn't that great either that day.. Overall a good experience.
I was here with a friend and overall he experience was good…walking into the space was great since it really felt like my fantasy of what an evening dinner in Havana would be like. I had the following:
Black Rice Paella
Pad Thai
Ox Tail Balls
Sangria
Overall the food was good…fairly flavorful and a good selection of items to appeal to a variety of interests.
I thought the service was very good and that we were taken care of by our server.
Finding a good place to eat, or even finding a place to eat in the immediate area late at night is a challenge, so i'm so lucky to be able to access yelp when i'm in need. Luckily, we were able to find this hole in the wall that serves food not processed or laden with oil, and although the dishes were a bit pricy, the music and ambience was great to wind down after another hectic day of crowds and walking all around the city:
Tiger salad – 3 stars – for $12, we got a mound of watercress with spices (see menu). However, not sure what was really hard that felt like rocks in it (could be the sesame seeds or shallots fried too high)
Grilled skirt steak in 5 spices – 3 stars – for $28, had a strip of steak cut up in pieces over beans and rice. The steak didn't have much 5 spice flavor, in fact it just tasted like broiled steak, but the rice was made just right, considering most rice we've eaten in nyc were hard, and my sons were missing eating soft rice in this city. This also came with black beans which was a nice addition to it.
Peking style cornish hen – 4 stars – for $24, this was the most flavorful dish. A whole cornish hen over rice with the sauce complimenting both. I'd definitely order this again.
Pan fried noodles – 2 stars – for $12, was fried and oily with only a slight shoyu taste. All of us didn't care for this dish.
Tres leche dessert – 4 stars – would have been $8, but checked in yelp and it was free. This was an exotic dessert we've never tasted before. It was flavorful and delightful.
Service – 5 stars – the waiter was attentive, food arrived quickly, and the music was an excellent mix to end our night. However, the place is really dark, only lit with small candles, so we had to use our phone to shine on our food to grab and see what we were eating.
Let me just preface this by saying that I came to Calle Dao on an impossible mission – to find a restaurant that could satisfy a vegetarian and a carnivore. And Calle Dao left us all satisfied with our meals.
The mark of a good menu, in my opinion, is one that has variability in their menu so that there is something for everyone, without straying too far from the ethos of the restaurant. Calle Dao hit that mark – no questions asked.
First of all, the Cuban Chinese fusion concept seemed so foreign and unique, but when you step into Calle Dao it is surprisingly fitting. Everything about the ambiance, the food, the cocktails flowed with the Cuban and Chinese fusion. That being said, the Tostones were AMAZING and honestly, they stole the show for me. The mint-basil mojito sauce were a perfect complement to the perfectly crisp tostones. The cuban sandwich was good as well – I loved the fact that it was soy-cured to give it a bit of an asian twist to a cuban classic.
All in all, great menu. And as much as I enjoyed my lunch, I definitely agree that Calle Dao is more of a cocktails and tapas kind of venue. The cocktail menu is amazing.
Awesome happy hour! Happy hour runs from 5-7. My party got oysters ($1), fries, and duck empanadas. The drinks are pretty strong, so i would definitely recommend coming by after work.
Swung by this spot on my way to an event and decided to get some grub and a drink. We ordered a few apps and shared along with the margaritas on the rocks and mojitos which were spot on.
I'd like to come back with more time to indulge in a full meal and try other drinks in their menu.
Even though the atmosphere here is awesome, the food was only a three. My caipirinha wasn't the best, it tasted overly sweet and bitter at the same time. The pork belly and duck egg soup was kind of weird, so unless you're feeling adventurous, I wouldn't order it. My cubano sandwich was nothing worth writing about, it was just a sandwich. Churros for dessert were equally meh.
The only thing I really like about this restaurant is the decor and atmosphere. It makes you feel like you're stepping into a party.
