I would come here for the Sangria especially the red one, nothing else.
I love coming here for lunch. I've had their dinner as well and its excellent. My colleague had never been to this area of Newark and I was about to show some of the excellent Portuguese cuisines. My colleague had the chicken stew special which was very well prepared with large cuts of fresh vegetables and oversized chunks of chicken. I had the Cuban sandwich which was more than filling. They always start off with marinated olives and bread. Great service. If it were later, I'd have a beer as well. Friendly local crowd.
Celebrated my co-worker's 6 month anniversary with our company by coming here on his request yesterday for lunch. Conveniently located by our facility, it's great to come here for an awesome Portuguese lunch and then return to work all within an hour. Their parking lot was pretty packed when we got here at 12:30PM, but we got a spot on the street almost directly in front of the place.
From the outside, it looks like an old tavern, with a patio area outside that I'm sure was packed for the summer. There's a handicap ramp for those with special needs, which is always very accommodating. The ceilings and walls of the space are rustic, with exposed brick and wooden beams. The wait staff is alert and eager to please; another plus.
We started with their shrimps in garlic sauce, which has become a staple. My coworker got their pulled pork sandwich, and I got the Portuguese steak sandwich. Both orders came with a HUGE portion of fries; way too much for one person. My steak was thinly sliced, and the roll was toasted with thin garlic slices wedged into it. Under the thin slices of steak, there was cottage ham, and then on top was a fried egg. I couldn't pick the sandwich up, so I had to fork and knife it.
Our overall experience was nothing short of our last – which was perfect. The food is just wonderful, and wouldn't mind working my way through the menu for that matter. I wish I took pictures before hand, but, I seem to forget once the amazing smell of flavors hit the table. Ooops.
Stumbled upon this by accident on a trip to Newark. The place has a parking lot and parking is an issue in Newark. It was uncrowded for lunch on a Sunday and service was friendly and good.We both had fish preceded by a flaming sausage- I can't resist flaming sausages! The bronzino and snapper were good. The white sangria was a pleasant surprise. It actually tasted like it had a wine in it, instead of just fruit and soda.I liked the way the place looked with nice tiles and I enjoyed sitting by the window. You're right near Newark Airport and I lost track of the number of planes I saw landing. There was also some really funny urban street action .
Wow… only 3 reviews?!?
We were taken to Campino's by friend's who live in Fort Lee – not close at all, but COMPLETELY worth it!
Let me begin by saying… the service was terrible. It was slow and non-existent. But don't worry, the food more than makes up for it.
Sangria… get a pitcher… or three. Delicious! Easy to drink, not very strong. Highly enjoyable, comparable to Rumba Cubana's.
Appetizers: Potato Slices (like thick potato chip/fries), unsalted – YUM
Chorizo… deliciously smoked, comes to your table flaming over fire
Prepared and served you to tableside
Fried Calamari: Avoid this like the plague unless you like chewy mushy
cold calimari. This was the only no no of the night.
Dinner: My friends had 3 steak dishes, perfectly prepared. They were all Wonderful
Now, onto MY dish – Paella Valency – WOW!
This dish could serve 6! It had a half lobster and a tail, clams, mussels,
shrimp, scallops, chorizo and more!
G E T T H I S!
Not only was it delicious, for a mere $25 it could have fed the table! Fresh,
Moist, Flavorful, I want to live next door to Campino's so I could have this
anytime i want!
Dessert: Chocolate Mousse, Mmm! Best Ever! Creamy, thick, rich!
Flan: Pass on this one, nothing special.
I can't wait to bring other people here… if only I didn't live in NY…
This was the site of my office holiday lunch this year. As an avid Yelper unlike my coworkers, I was a little concerned based on some of the hit or miss reviews.
I don't remember exactly everything that was shared or the names of the dishes, but I will do my best to recall. The server seemed a little stand-offish throughout the meal so that kinda of stunk because we were a decent sized, and upbeat crow.
We shared a number of appetizers among the table: Fried Calamari, Balsamic Portobellos, Garlic Shrimp, and Tomatoes & Mozzarella. The portobellos and shrimp were definitely the best here, not lacking any flavor and decent portions. Everything else was pretty standard; not good, not bad.
I'd say the table was split on the proteins between meat and fish. First, let me start off by saying the cuts of steak that I saw were HUGE, especially the filet; it must have been AT LEAST 12 oz. Those who got the steaks seemed to be very content. I ordered a Chilean Sea Bass Special that came with a champagne sauce and truffle mashed potatoes. I asked for the risotto instead because I really could care less for mashed potatoes. So when I get my VERY BIG plate arrived, I was a little turned off. The fish, albeit a very very big filet, was breaded and smothered in the creamy champagne sauce and sitting next to a pile of parmesan risotto. The fish + sauce wasn't really that flavorful; I'm pretty sure that sauce was just butter and cream, and the fish was under-cooked. The risotto was also kind of bland but, I enjoyed it better then the fish. In the end, myself and 2 others had upset stomachs later in the day so not the most enjoyable experience.
There are much better Portuguese, Spanish and Brazilian restaurants in Newark. In my opinion, I would try others before experimenting with this place. Hopefully next year, I have some say in our holiday lunch.
