  1. I wanted to love this place more because it is quaint, charming and unpretentious in the midst of Williamsburg. The shopkeeper was also very warm and nice. The shop is warm and bright and there's a nice patio backyard. I enjoyed an iced coffee as well, solid not super strong but refreshing on such a warm day.

In terms of pastries, I tried a salted caramel merveilleux, a meringue cookie topped with whipped cream. It was quite sugary and didn't have a deep caramel flavor or much saltiness at all. Regular cream puffs was good, thick cookie like shell, heavier cream than I'm used. Tasty but not super fresh, and nothing to write home about. Cute local place to stop by but not exceptional in terms of pastry quality.

  2. The absolute cutest garden you will find in Williamsburg, shrouded by puffy shrubs and pink roses. That was the biggest plus at Caprices.

The cream puffs were alright. Not sure if they were old, or just been sitting awhile, but felt dry and sad. I had the cream puff swan, the gent had the pistachio eclair. Also tried an iced chocolate drink, which is made with hand-ground chocolate, which looked amazing (all the pregnant ladies in the shop, and there were several, were fascinated and gabbing about it as it was made), but it tasted just okay – not going to write home about it, but I guess I will write on Yelp.

Fine for a snack if you absolutely need a quick injection of pate choux, but otherwise, skip and eat some other stuff, dude! Treat yourself to some real treatsss.

  3. Adorable, adorable, small bakery tucked away in Williamsburg. Been meaning to come here for a while and finally stopped by, mostly because they participate in the CUPS app. The best part of this bakery is the cute garden in the back where you can sip coffee, eat an eclair, and escape the city for a little bit. I love to come here on my lunch break, and enjoy the sunshine.

I think the eclairs are a bit pricey at $5.50- but you gotta treat yourself sometimes! I ordered the Speculos flavor, with cookies bits on top. The dough was perfectly soft and you melt as delicious cream shoots out with your first bite. The caneles are inexpensive at $1.00 but not so tasty once they've cooled down. It was hard, tasteless and anti-climatic.

In addition to eclairs and caneles they also offer, cakes/breads $2.50-$4.00, cream puffs $2.75, and many gluten-free options. And everything is made right in the back! Next time I'm coming back for their cream puffs.

    Bonus: FREE WiFi!

  4. If you're a fast New York walker it's very likely that you've passed by this adorable spot on this street and completely missed it. That happened to me for months until I was looking for a café to work from one day and was frustrated by the lack of space at Toby's and Blue Bottle. Caprices by Sophie was the perfect solution!

They offer gorgeous French style tarts, cakes, pastries, and cookies – all baked in house according to the nice lady I spoke with. They have a white chocolate macadamia cranberry cookie that's the size of a human head and just to die for. They also have plenty of coffee and tea options to wash down all that sugary goodness. The space is tiny with just a couple of tables inside, but – surprise – they have an absolutely gorgeous and spacious back garden. Their wifi wasn't the best out there, but still doable, and so quiet and peaceful. It's this neighborhood's best kept secret so don't tell too many people!

  6. The creme puffs are so good – though pricey for how small they are. Do yourself a favor and stop by and give it a try! Love the pistachio one – mm~

  7. My wife's cousin is visiting from France, so "the boss" gave me the assignment of taking him sightseeing.

He was complaining how his son grew a beard and is now a Bohemian, and I instantly got the idea of taking him to Williamsburg.  We got off the L at Lorimer and stopped in for some Mexican food (see today's other review), took a walk down to the pier, and after a 20 minute debate about whether the building he was snapping photos of was the Freedom Tower, we were thirsty enough to hunt down some cappuccino.

I have not been to this area in many, many years, and it does not resemble in the slightest the Williamsburg I remember.  Today, it reminds me very much of Riverwalk, the plastic-and styrofoam tourist trap complete with artificial river, in San Antonio TX.

On one of the tourist-clogged, er, newly-arrived-Brooklyn-resident-clogged streets, one finds this cafe, which, like seemingly every wine bar, restaurant, bar and cafe in the area, is tiny, and filled with bearded bohemians and rheir bespectacled better halves.

Eventually, I guess I have to talk about the capuccino.  It was pretry good.  We did not try the pastries, cause this dude is from France and has lived there his whole life.  And with all the bad things in the world, like terrorism, menstruation and New Jersey, the last thing people need is to travel a very long distance to get something they could get at home.  I wouldn't go to Mongolia to get bagels, and French dudes should not come to New York for eclairs.

There is a rising sun motif decorating the shopping bags and signs in the store, so I got the impression the Owner may be originally from Japan.  I'll be back sometime to find out.

  8. The guy who's working there is super friendly and welcoming. But their mini choux cream made by meringue were not so good. They were very, very sweet. The meringue parts tasted all the same; what differed were the top part where they had creams or chocolates or other stuffs. I was more convinced that I hate meringue.

I had cappuccino, roast coconut, pistachio, and chocolate. I didn't know that the cappuccino and coconut ones were meringue based; otherwise, I wouldn't order them. The coffee cream has strong cappuccino flavor, but too sweet. The roast coconut was made with thin chocolate flakes and was delicious. But the overall thing was overly sweet.

The pistachio and chocolate ones were normal choux (but they do have a chocolate flavor with meringue as the choux body). They both were rich in flavor, but I just prefer the chocolate. The pistachio cream was a little thick to me.

I was really excited before I came here, but I left with disappointment. I hope their eclair a and other bakeries and pastries are good and I may have a try next time, if I happen to pass by.
