Finally finished moving my daughter into her
Apartment. It's my first visit during the day and we are looking for lunch. As my daughters American friend hasn't experienced Hispanic cuisine, we decide on the Dominican eatery, Caridad Restaurant. Their take out and delivery business during lunch is busy, and it took a while to get acknowledged and even then it was by a busboy who acted like he didn't want to be there. Finally our waiter Victor arrived. He was personable enough, and we conversed better in Spanish than English with him. Onto the food: appetizer of fried plaintains was good, the dipping salsa was AWESOME. Side salads were surprisingly generous. Skirt steaks were just ok, as was the chicken 'n rice. I had the Camarofongo. This is mofongo (mashed, cooked plaintains) with shrimp (camarones en Espanol). The mofongo was tough and dry, I've had way better in Miami and The Dominican Republic. Saving this dish, the shrimp were in a good garlic sauce, were a good size, and were a generous portion. Cafecitos all around were a nice finish. When Victor heard my daughter was new to the neighborhood, he brought out a round of sangria gratis as a welcome, just as our server at Harlem Public had done with tequila the night before! I "might" go back, but if I do, not at the lunch hour. The extremely long wait time for mostly mediocre food was unacceptable.
Honestly, I enjoyed the oxtail, rice and beans here. Not bad. Good tasting food ready to go, just like in the Heights. What I didn't enjoy was the hours of cramping I got. So, so sad. I really wanted to like this place.
So, one pregnancy and 20 rotisserie chickens later, I'm here to tell you that this place would be 5 stars for the freaking chicken skin alone. The fact that the chicken attached to the skin is outstanding, and that the rice and beans are something I crave separate from the skin means that I care about nothing else, experience-wise.
But it helps that the ladies here are really nice and that other food of theirs is also pretty good.
Average food for mediocre service. We had to flag down our waitress several times. The only reason I stopped by is because I wanted something quick and relatively cheap, which it is. I've seen more negative reviews but can honestly say the only bad part of my visit was the service itself. If you want a quick place for take out, this might be better.
