  1. I like this place because….
-really cute décor on the inside and outside
    -excellent salsa, nice and spicy.
    -BYOB
-entrees are big portions and they have a ton of combination entrees to choose from.
    -good service
-they do offer sangria pitchers, $14 for full, $9 for half (need your own booze).

Just a few things to note…
-chips/salsa are served to the table when you first sit down but if you want a refill beware that its an additional $3.
-I ordered the Frida combo entree which consisted of a chicken enchilada, beef taco and chile relleno. It was all real good except next time I would want to substitute the chile relleno for something else. I didn't really like it too much, kind of tasteless.

  2. We stopped in for dinner on Sat. night. We started with an order of guacamole and requested a side of the (hot) salsa arbol. The guacamole was a generous portion and was well seasoned with salt and lime and specked with diced onion and tomato. The salsa arbol is usually used on the entrees and was served warm but it had the right amount of heat. The complimentary salsa was well prepared too. Unfortunately you won't get hot, fresh from the fryer tortilla chips here but with all the big servings of filling mexican food; you might be willing to overlook that. I had the skirt steak fajitas and my girlfriend had the chicken molcajete. Both were served on sizzling plates/bowls and were HUGE. Mine had tons of skirt steak with onions. peppers and the requested salsa verde. The molcajete was loaded with seasoned veggies, chicken, and an awesome piece of grilled queso blanco. The tortillas served with both were warm, the rice- fluffy, and the refried beans were OK.

A liquor store nearby delivered us a bottle of tequila which we added to the pitcher of virgin margaritas that we ordered. Service was okay but could've been better…I suspect it's because we sat outside on a day when most people were inside. I'm looking forward to going back again soon and trying some of dishes offered on the more authentic side of the menu.

  3. I am giving Casa Piquin 5 stars, but I really want to give it 10 stars, it's just that good. Their food makes me so very happy.

Casa Piquin is a BYOB restaurant. I enjoy bringing a six pack of dos equis or some tequila to put in their margarita mix. The complimentary chips and salsa are delicious. The chips are not overly salty and always warm. The salsa is fresh. You can also get free refills of chips and salsa, which is a pleasant surprise these days.

Their portion size is generous, expect to leave full or to even bring home some leftovers. My go to meal is their enchiladas with verde sauce. The sauce is so tangy, with a hint of sweetness and mixes so well with with the melted cheese. Their black beans and rice are delicious, and the pico de gallo is cool and fresh. I've never had a bad meal there and my stomach always leaves happy.

The staff is always very welcoming and service is always quick.  They are located below sidewalk level and I wonder if this is why it's never overly crowded. Last time I was there I noticed they placed some signs on the sidewalk, good call. This place is a hidden gem and everyone should find it!

  4. The food was very good, but the service was just okay, and the ambiance left something to be desired.

I had the fish tacos.  Not the best I've ever had, but they definitely held their own.  The rice and beans were authentic.  Also, I had shared some steak nachos with the table and I thought they were excellent.

On this issue of ambiance… A mariachi band playing at someone else's table is great.  A mariachi band playing directly in front of my table is just awkward.  I'm sorry.  Culturally, it just doesn't fit here.  This particular mariachi band was very good, and even had a trumpeter.  Really, that's the last thing I need…  a guy blowing a horn in my face when I'm trying to have dinner with friends.  We got up and left, had to sit outside to avoid the  extremely distracting music.

As I said, food was good.  Would go back for takeout or if I was sure there was no band.

  5. From street level you have to go downstairs into the restaurant proper not very good for a person who has ambulatory problems. And what hits you when you first walk in is unpleasant odor.  The chairs are a mix of plastic patio chairs and wood with padded seats.  The dining room is huge with plenty of seating and decorated in very festive indigenous colors and artifacts. The waiter seem to be impatient even though there were barely 4 or five couples in the place. The guacamole was over saturated in lime juice. The prices are pretty high. No alcohol just the mixings. The salsa with the corn chips was delicious. The fish tacos were essentially one fillet of tilapia split three ways and again at $15 prices are high.  I was glad I was given the choice between grilled fish or battered and fried fish.  Surprisingly, parking was easy.

  6. Oh man, they don't play around when they mean spicy. I had the al pastor burrito and it was super good. Chunks of pineapple, tender chicken, a lot of kick. It was great. I had a try of the taco combination platter and that was also delicious. Everything was flavorful and the portions are generous. I ended up stealing a bit of ceviche as well and that was amazing. Very fresh, and nothing was precooked or chewy. Great stuff. Its BYOB as well so thats always a plus.

The staff is pretty chill as well. Not the most chatty or fluent in English but they were friendly and attentive. I don't eat in Montclair often but this place is definitely worth a visit.

  7. Was in the mood for some Mexican food and didn't want to drive too far, ironically there are 8 Mexican Restaurants by my house and sadly I don't care for any of them to consider it my favorite Mexican spot…

Not only do I live by authentic Mexican Restaurants but also by Mexican chain restaurants… Lots to choose if you're drunk …

Anyways I happened to come on YELP and it's funny how every 5 de mayo lots of Mexican Restaurants pop up including this one ( casa de piquin) but the reviews are so atrocious that I keep scrolling and end up at a horrible Mexican restaurant…

Casa de Piquin has a lunch special for $8.99 , and its not your usual lunch special that only has the worst 5 items to choose and u just give up and get something from the regular menu …. Nop not here at Casa de Piquin…. Anyway, I've ordered taquitos as an appetizer.

It was so tasty and fresh … It had sour cream ,Pico de gallo, and fresh slices of avocado.
As for my lunch I ordered tacos al pastor, I can't lie it was the best tacos I've ever had!!! So delicious and tasty , my mouth is watering reminiscing about the tacos, it also came along w rice and beans….

    No complaints here!!!!!!

5 de Mayo this will be the spot!!!!!
Service was MAGNIFICENT— not saying other yelpers are liars maybe they have new management… Don't let other reviews discourage you from stopping by…

  8.
